Graviteam Mius, more than any other wargame on the market, is about real-world tactics and planning. Today I bring you a video that focuses on the Graviteam mindset, and how to successfully approach battlefield situations and come away victorious.
Ok now it's time for the real stuff... for those of you still reading, yep... you caught me. There are two errors in this vid so you better call the youtube police:-p
First, I definitely moved my arty and battery commander after the engagement began. I lost my save file when I exited out to edit. Second, neither Hans nor Fritz had an MG42 when I went up and inspected them at 1:10. SORRY
Ok... now it's time for the real real real stuff. If you want to play this scenario, download it here:
drive.google.com/file/d/1EVu8...
From there, put the file into your graviteam mius folder, in the shared missions directory- usually in a file path like this:
C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Graviteam Tactics Mius-Front\data\common\shared\missions
When you load the game up, go to quick battles and it should be there.

My favourite game! I like it even more than Command Ops, although this one realistic game too. My GrandGrandfather was the rifle company commander of 311 st Rifle Division in Volkhov front. @@sinekonata No, it would become normal again to use languages correctly, because constantly reading faulty texts is going to dumb down even the best brains because all these ersatz-language comments - not only on YT but everywhere - will become new patterns in people's brains, so that even those who once knew how to spell words correctly or how to use grammar correctly without even thinking about it, will unlearn it and start stuttering, making mistakes they never made before, it will slow them down, because they suddenly have to think again when they write or even only read texts ... it's the scourge of the internet. A plague. It eventually ruins all languages everywhere to an extent until everybody is writing and talking like one of all these 24 carat idiots. Not the OP, who's obviously not a native English speaker, he just tried to express himself, which is fine, but I'm sure, also his mother tongue gets raped by all the illiterate morons on the internet and this is going to affect his own language skills in the long run as well.

Great tutorial. Graviteam Tactics is the only wargame I've ever played that emphasises the EXTREME importance of artillery support in tactical situations. In almost every other game, you can get away without having an understanding of timing and calling firemissions to cover your advances. Not in this one though. Support makes or breaks an assault, or even a defense. After experiencing just how powerful artillery can be in this game, you'll understand why the Soviets called artillery the "God of war".
@spellcaster39ify
@spellcaster39ify 4 года назад
Yeah this is generally true, however Combat Mission is pretty good at requiring you to plan. In some scenarios, you call off-map fire support and then you see it will take 9 minutes to hit, and often it is all over the place even when your spotter is correcting it. I have had scenarios where more than 75% of the total shells fired didn't land even close to the target.
@Tom_Quixote
@Tom_Quixote 4 года назад
@@spellcaster39ify That's because in Combat Mission, your spotter won't actually correct a fire mission. If he doesn't see the fall of the spotting rounds, he will just call fire for effect and the barrage will land in a random place.

I hate going into games like this with a lack of knowledge, and these tutorials explain all the details in full depth. Thanks for another informative video TWS! You had me fooled when you said, "primarily infantry versus infantry situations" and "the numbers are even" and then sprung some serious fire support! :)) Considering that artillery caused 50-60% of casualties in WW2, the presence of a 4-gun battery of 122mm guns is basically like having an additional 2 companies of infantry with mortar support as well. You probably could have shelled those positions until you ran out of shells and then used the M-30s' smoke shells to both conceal your infantry assault and as ersatz incendiary shells, and you may have had no enemy left to face. I disagree with the other posts that you cannot assault a prepared enemy position without artillery, because you can with squad mortars and proper bases of fire from LMGs if you have no HMGs. One thing Graviteam does not really do well in "hands off" mode is set up bases of fire when you select a platoon and have it assault or attack. You can try hotkeying squads and keeping one back to provide covering fire with Observed Fire from the Platoon Leader's squad. This means you need to keep the Leader within shouting range of that supporting squad, however. So, it is possible to assault an enemy position with just infantry, however you need at least 2:1 preferably 3:1 numerical superiority, and you need to achieve fire superiority - either by setting the MG-42 positions as Priority Targets or by using Observed Fire on their positions with the infantry Platoon Leader directing a squad (or 2) on AI Fire Control. You could have flanked via the woods on your "unsupported" example and inflicted a lot more casualties with enfilading fire, but I get that you were trying to show the difference between planned vs unplanned (read: impatient) moves. Keep 'em coming!
@spellcaster39ify
@spellcaster39ify 4 года назад
p.s. the range of the MG-42s would make it extremely difficult to set up any kind of ranged support from direct-fire weapons, so pretty much any chance of winning with just infantry vs entrenched infantry would rest with exploiting local terrain features - even a small rise in the ground could mean being able to take on enemy trenches one at a time versus being subjected to overlapping fields of fire from multiple prepared positions. And finally, even though you cannot change the fuse settings for on-map artillery, you may wish to show in another video the difference between standard fuse settings and delayed (mine effect) fuse settings and how the latter just blow entrenchments to pieces.
@spellcaster39ify
@spellcaster39ify 4 года назад
p.p.s. it's worth stating the obvious - and that's the extreme level of attention to detail that a German CO would place on selecting the absolute best positions for his HMGs. In your scenario they are placed in among the entrenched infantry. In reality they would have been placed well to the rear and of course would have been invisible to your spotter until they opened up on your attacking troops. The Germans also would have had some forward OPs and most certainly an OP and probably MG nest in the woods. The German CO would have been court-martialled for setting up trenches that were so completely vulnerable to an undetected attack through the woods. :D

Says 1:1 engagement. Proceeds to sweep back and display long row of 122 mm pieces ready to wreak havoc😁. But yep, as you said, the primary driver with infantry engagements is support when it comes to your offenses on entrenched enemy. Small squad tactics and topography should be used in conjunction, as you say (and as I tried to do in the vid with the wooded flanking move), but well-coordinated support is the main thing that I'm trying to get across when helping newer players. I saw your forum post about the mortar squads attached to infantry platoons and designating fire etc. Never tried it, but it's an excellent tip and I can't wait to try it out in the next dlc. As you can tell, I'm a bit of a hands-off guy when it comes to the minutia, but your idea seems too good to pass up. I've tried other tactical things like separating squads into two and holding the light mgs back to provide fire support with assaults and have had mixed success. Nice writeup chief, as always. I'll be trying that inf platoon mortar tactic out
@spellcaster39ify
@spellcaster39ify 4 года назад
@@TheWarSimmer Hahaha :D I do think it's a valid choice to just want to order entire platoons to attack, defend, etc, however I don't see GT yet as having the kind of coordinated tactical movement that the Wehrmacht in particular was famous for in 41-43. I showed GT to a friend of mine who graduated from the School of Advanced Warfighting (US Marine Major) and he said that the infantry doesn't look like it's executing proper fire and maneuver. The squad LMGs should be staying back and suppressing enemies, then advancing. Often in GT, the LMG is out front. When you try to split off a scout team, one of the scouts has a LMG, which is crazy. So, like you, I split the scout team, hotkey it and have it stay back to provide fire support, but it is not that effective and I am better off holding back the leader squad and another squad as the base of fire. It's too much micro and it shouldn't be necessary, but after a while you realize that GT is not using infantry the way they are intended to be used. This also goes for the football kickoff style clashes that happen when units come into close contact with each other. I look forward to hearing how you get along with the platoon mortar. Keep in mind they have very limited ammo, so they will stop firing when they hit 20%, which happens quickly.

Tbh it can be either way. This example uses the battery commander as the spotter and the firing platoon commanders stay with the guns. They can ALL do the job of one another interchangeably, but this is the "proper" way. If you place the battery commander with the arty as I did in the tutorial, you don't need a wired connection, however. If I could ask for a tutorial, I would focus on movement on the strategic map. I have recently returned to the game and tried Saur Mogila for Russians and even got very nice K:D ratios and a lot of tactical wins, although for some reason my units did not use the breakthrough options and wasted turns not moving anywhere. Also I hardly ever got a numbers advantage despite moving a lot of units there so I had to defeat them in detail and with effective use of tanks. Found out that luring enemy to attack first by appearing weak is quite useful.

Not sure what you mean by "did not use the breakthrough options." You decide where they go, right? As for luring the enemy to attack, the AI always attacks even when they are supposed to defend. @spellcaster39ify

The term "fortified position" evokes more than what we see in this scenario, which really are just a series of hasty field works - little more than deep foxholes. There are no parapets, fighting steps, sandbags, tree trunks, rocks, etc, and certainly no concrete. However, if you don't have what you state above when assaulting a fortified position, you can still do it, but you need some combination of these: 1) Cover of darkness or fog, preferably with rain to mask movement sounds. Ideally a dark, rainy night, where enemy sentries aren't enthusiastic about keeping watch. 2) Stealth and highly effective close combat weapons like the PPSh, and double loads of grenades. 3) Flamethrowers 4) Motivated / elite troops 5) Accurate and heavy suppressing fire from supporting squads. 6) Diversions that draw HMG fire and allow your main force to close to within lethal range undetected. 7) Pre-ranged mortars (unless you consider these artillery). 8) 3:1 or greater numerical superiority 9) NCOs that stay alive.

@avtomat11 4 года назад
@@spellcaster39ify "Not really" Ah yes, you can actually assault a fortified position without tube artillery, tank or MG support. You just need the stars to align, you need environmental conditions to be in your favor, and you need other means of achieving localized firepower superiority like mortars (another way of delivering high-explosive on your enemies, making them de-facto artillery). Or, if we were to think within the limited timeframes of real operations, and how most of the time you don't have days or even hours to wait for nightfall or fog, we could safely say you need *artillery and tanks* to overcome fortified positions about 95% of the time. :)
@spellcaster39ify
@spellcaster39ify 4 года назад
@@avtomat11 We are talking about extremely localised combat here, not some kind of regimental or divisional operation. If you run into a fortified position, you probably knew about it in advance. If your divisional commander insists it is assaulted in broad daylight without heavy weapons support, then your options are of course extremely limited. However, the logic of the question was simple: without X how to you accomplish Y? I answered that question. If you introduce new variables, such as "how do you accomplish Y without the ability to wait for nightfall or use light artillery" (a 50mm mortar and a 122mm howitzer have very little in common) then you are changing the question.
