In the last year, we've seen three major camera manufacturers bring out new 24-70mm F2.8 lenses. So we took the Sony GM 24-70mm, Pentax 24-70 DFA and Nikkor 24-70 VR, and the still outstanding Canon 24-70mm II out to the Crowsnest Pass with Jeremy Fokkens to run some tests. What's the new gold standard for standard zooms? Find out in this episode!

Loved the shots fired at Pentax for the Tamron lens haha! Anxious to seeing the coming K-1 video. Really like the love you guys still give to Pentax.

Looks like a lot of interest in the Pentax. How about a review of the 24-70 with the K-1 now?

Great Video! You were pretty coy about the Pentax lens: it's no secret that it's a rebadged Tamron, as is the 15-30mm, as I suspect you well know ;). Pity you didn't have the K-1 to use with it. I'm very pleased with mine. I'm looking forward to your take on it as I find your reviews are always fair and entertaining.

The Pentax 24-70 (shown in this video) is supposedly a rebadged Tamron 24-70 (possibly with Pentax coatings).

I believe it. I saw the Pentax 15-30. It is identical to the Tamron 15-30. They must be making the lenses for Pentax.

Great video as always! What Jeremy experienced when using the Pentax is normal. The problem with Pentax is that it doesn't reach the hands of consumers to try and feel, but once someone holds and uses a Pentax, the differences become obvious. Can't wait for your K-1 video. Keep up the good work!

See, it's videos like this that makes me thing DigitalRev's glory days have past. Not only does TCS have some incredibly charismatic hosts and great production value in their videos. They invest several days into reviewing and comparing the equipment. I absolutely love seeing the variety in the things getting tested as well. Action photography, portraits, photojournalism, video. It's all great. Please keep doing what you're doing!

Been watching you guys and your reviews for a few years now and can I just say that consistently, your vids get better and better overall - you manage to give great opinions and thoughts often with varying points of view (guest co-reviewers), a great amount of technical info without getting bogged down, real honest impressions and all the while you keep managing to make it fun. Let's just say there are many others out there, some more prolific than others, that can't manage half of that, let alone all of it. Cheers for doing what you do.

Ha! I have that exact setup - Pentax k3ii and 24-70mm lens and love it! So glad you included Pentax in your review. Most people completely ignore this brand. I use it to shoot volleyball games indoors. Not a professional by any means but still able to get some great shots. I find that using the focus tracking slows down the capture rate so don't use that function.

When you do test the K-1, please use some lenses other than the 24-70, 28-105, and 15-30. Most reviews focusing on the camera tend to use those lenses since they're newest, but the most interesting pictures I'm seeing from users are coming from the FA Limited lenses (31 1.8, 43 1.9, and 77 1.8). In a way, I'm glad to see you got the 24-70 out of the way with this shootout, because I think most Pentax users would rather see how the existing top of the line Pentax lenses work on it, and I think those three lenses, even thought they're quite old, show the potential of the K-1 within Pentax's system more than the Tamro...er, Pentax 15-30 and 24-70 (excluding WR, of course).

@iSOBigD
@iSOBigD 8 лет назад
+Karl Ramstedt Yeah for anything that doesn't move but involves changes in lighting based on where you aim, using manual makes no sense. I find myself shooting in Aperture priority the most (I cap my ISO and shutter speed depending on the lighting) and switch to S priority to catch a nice car driving by or to get some motion in a tracking shot.

The Pentax 24-70 is definitely the Tamron rebranded! I had the Tamron 24-70 but sold it for a 35mm f/1.4 Sigma, I guess because the Sigma prime is so sharp, I can easily crop to 70mm with more sharpness than the Tamron and Nikon 24-70, for events I think a 24-70 would be more convenient but I'm planning to add an 85mm prime for those. I have a D810 so all those megapixels combined with a sharp lens make it better to just crop than use standard zooms.

I really enjoyed the video thanks TCS-TV..I bought the canon 24-70 f/2.8L USM II few months ago....pricey but super high quality glass. since getting it I have constantly been just leaving it on the camera (60D) its really hard to take a bad photo with this lens. consistency is definitely key to this lens and how sharp it is blows me away compared to my 70-200 f/4L IS USM (which is still awesome for an f/4) just wish for the $2k price tag it had IS

I have a Pentax K-1 coming soon I have a pentax Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 curious to see the results vs the K50 I used it on before which was just good. I spun through this but noticed Jeremy said at the end he was still reaching for his primes, and that as my thought, in this focal range a standard and a modest wide angle are not going to break the bank, you get a stop or so of light and DOF control which can make a real difference, it's a much smaller rig to use point at people and carry, and the reframing can be done by moving you and the subject rather than zooming.

With respect to resolution tests, it'll be interesting to see the Pentax 24-70 on the K-1. When mounted on a crop body like the K-3, you're really squeezing a lot of pixels out of a relatively small area. It's hinted at in the video, but it's widely known that the Pentax 24-70 is a Tamron re-brand. No shame there -- the Tammy 24-70 is fantastic, other than the bokeh (as shown in this video). It'd be cool to get some subjective comparisons from Jeremy on the overall color rendition of the photos straight out of camera -- I'm curious if the new Pentax HD coating makes photos "pop" as much as everyone says they do.
@TomOhle1
@TomOhle1 8 лет назад
great job guys! just a personal opinion, the onion ring on the Pentax and cats eyes on the Nikon aside. typically is it not the case that you would need the wider end to be sharper across the frame wide open rather than the longer end where you may typically do portraiture and not want quite such biting sharpness? that tamron is rated by dxo as sharpest zoom on the Nikon d810. I have to wonder the impact of adapters on sharpness tests with the a7rii....

People getting too hyped up on this sharpnesssharpness factor, not that many of us out here are in the business of printing 4 Metre high posters. Also fairly pointless looking at on a low pixel density/non colour matched display. Why do you think that our Sony 4K Broadcast colour graded monitors Sony PVM-X300 cost us around £15000 right now?? Why don't we focus on composition, only a small percentage of photographers are going to go out, buy a £1700 Sony lens, when so many alternative FE mount lenses are looming on the horizon. They might not do exactly the "Sony standard" but hey they will be well good enough for the majority of people out here. Crowsnest Pass looks fab. and the coffee guy and blacksmith were two very well chosen subjects, great video, thanks!!

Did you guys use the FS5 exclusively to shoot this episode? To my eyes, the interior scenes look sharper and kind of "videoish" compared to the exterior scenes, which look more "organic". Maybe is the way the sensor reacts to different lighting or some camera settings. On a side note: Interesting choice of soundtrack; it has that Miami vibe. Something you would never expect to hear in a video shot on a rainy and cold location so far away from South Florida.

Great content, thanks for making it! Slight criticism though... as an optical engineer I'm of the opinion you need to preface your IQ/sharpness tests by stating that the comparison will show you which adapted/native lens works best on the Sony. I know there's the difference in sensors that would throw off a direct comparison, but it's really about the lens/body combo. The different materials used in the coatings on the sensors of differing companies could even throw off the performance of an adapted lens and cause off-axis aberrations. Also, just the different paint/materials on the barrel of the adapter can cause diffraction issues that could mess with corner sharpness, the list goes on and on... It'd be nice to just see lens/body combinations and show the amount of resolution that is achievable on each ecosystem. You guys are great! Not crucifying ya over this at all, but want to provide some feedback.
