The Great Race swordfight scene

From the 1965 comedy The Great Race, starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood, and Peter Falk. Even though it was a comedy, this more serious scene was the best part of the movie, in my opinion. A sword fight between Curtis and Ross Martin. You can see Martin becoming more worried as the fight progresses

The fact that these guys spent months training to make this fight look legit is just awesome.

Aw, they cut the scene right before Martin does a beautiful swan dive -- right into the rowboat. Brilliant slapstick finish to the scene!

As a fencer, I love this scene. Even though it was choreographed, there were a lot of real fencing moves used throughout. This was the movie that got me interested in fencing in the first place.

Yes I too am a big fencing fan. The first time I ever saw great fencing choreography was in Robin Hood Errol Flynn. But when I was this scene afterwards, let’s just say that this scene was superb! Also for another good fencing choreography, Check out 1978 Zorro with Frank Langella vs Ricardo Moltalban.

Great sword fight. Kudos to the actors for the training they had to do.

Ross Martin and Tony Curtis were coached at great length by a fencing master just for this scene. With real swords and foils, void of facial shields or any protective equipment, this scene had to be well choreographed. (an overlooked classic movie favorite; great fun to watch; great cast)

Truly great and even better that such a deadly, serious scene is in the middle of a pie throwing comedy. These guys were not foolin' around.

Ross Martin was a very undervalued actor - this scene really exemplifies how good he was. He exudes villainy and is very confident of being able to defeat Tony Curtis in the beginning and throughout the scene he goes from overconfident to grudging respect to respect to disbelief that "the great Leslie" is the better swordsman and finally to "afraid for his life" mode. thanks for posting this :)

I read that Ross Martin was diagnosed with a serious heart condition and no one in Hollywood would take a risk signing him on to a film let alone a series. This was an exception because Blake Edwards was a friend. He was a remarkable actor and could play any part well. God bless him.

incredibly dangerous scene to film, even something as simple and unpreventable as an equipment failure could have blinded or killed either one of them. I always thought Ross Martin was an undervalued actor and should have been a leading man.

And I love how they change weapons in the middle of the match, because it gives you a comparison between Foil and Sabre that shows how the two weapons are actually handled very differently. It's both a good dramatic scene and it shows technique. =)

Ross Martin was a brilliant character actor and had a brilliant mind as well: born in Poland, he spoke Polish, Yiddish, Russian, English, French, and Italian. He graduated magna cum laude with his Bachelor's degree and eventually earned his law degree. What a mind, and he was only 61 when he died!

Even earlier than Errol. I remember seeing them in silent movie swashbucklers like those of Douglas Fairbanks (whose son, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., played a villain in the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda, upon which this scene in The Great Race is based).

They both grew up in the U.S., but I still think it counts for something that Ross Martin (Polish) and Tony Curtis (Hungarian) had their ethnic roots in countries that greatly valued swordsmanship.

Curtis was from the lower east side of New York. I don’t think that anyone practiced sword fighting there. Since his Father was a poor tailor. He did learn his craft very well for the picture though.

NoldorianElf Tony Curtis underwent Fencing training and Riding under his contract with Universal Studios when he first arrived in Hollywood. He was subsequently reputed to be the best swordsman in Hollywood, and he was in fact a champion swordsman, hence the unmistakable ring of authenticity in this great scene.

I've gotten questions about why I left the last few slapstick seconds out when Martin's character crashes into the boat. To me it detracted from the whole scene. I mean, blood was drawn in this sword fight! Yes, it's a comedy, but this fight was great for its intensity and seriousness, and to include the last few seconds just robbed it of that. I wanted the scene to stand on its own for what it was, a great sword fight.
@Muck006

That part is the ultimate release of the tension built up in this fight and is necessary / part of the scene ... because it is a comedy after all.

None compares? Really? I find that hard to believe if you consider the great swordfights between Basil Rathbone and Errol Flynn. And I think there was more than one movie those two dueled in. Really excellent. In fact, in this scene when we see the shadows on the wall, it reminds me of the scene between Rathbone and Flynn when they did the same thing.

@@coperna714 Funny you say that because I was trying to think of the other guy who was actually considered more athletic than Errol Flynn. You got it - Tyrone Power. But I believe the movie I was thinking of may have been the Adventures of Robin Hood.

@grayfoxfive
@grayfoxfive 8 лет назад
+lamonstra See my earlier comment as to why I left the last few seconds out of the clip. Some people liked the slapstick comedy, but the sword fight itself was totally serious, and I wanted this clip to convey that without the slapstick at the end. To me, the sword fight was the best part rather than the ending, but different strokes for different folks.
@lamonstra1464
@lamonstra1464 8 лет назад
Yep you're right. The movie is a comedy so for me the best part is the big laugh at the end of the scene. But it IS one of the very best fight scenes of all time, be it sword, fist, gun, whatever! It's just great! Thanks for posting it.
