On the last weekend of September 2023, Rovos Rail conducted their third consecutive steam-hauled 'Great Train Race' to Heidelberg, situated to the southeast of Johannesburg.
On Friday the 29th of September, propelled by the 130-year-old Class 6 locomotive - No.439 - formerly of the Cape Government Railways - and Class 19D locomotive - No.3360 - formerly South African Railways - the train departed from Capital Park, heading east towards Greenview. Subsequently, it joined the Sentrarand Line, proceeding south towards Klipoortjie, the designated overnight stop for the consist.
We documented the journey as part of Stimela Events' 'Great Train Adventure,' where several photographers captured the train's preparation in the morning and its pursuit in the afternoon.
The final segment showcases the spectacular double-header crossing over the Blesbokspruit, just outside Heidelberg!
