I know I'm just joking around, I just saw all these comments saying that it's 'meh' or not that "GREAT." I like Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal (they're amazing actors!) but the movie itself was just 'ok'.
It's sad because this film was a coalition between an American studio, and a Chinese studio, with a Chinese director, and probably one of the biggest Chinese casts ever assembled for a blockbuster, and it was wasted sadly
The film fails when Matt Damon's character demonstrates his superhuman archery skill at the 25-30th minute. That gives his character no room for development. He never has to go on a 'personal journey'. That was the point when I stopped watching the film. What should have happened was a duel between a new character - the Chinese lady's BF or husband.
the visuals, costumes, and cinematography is all amazing in this movie. A true spectacle . I really wanted the writing to be good but it just takes the movie down sadly.

i yawned 3 times watching this review. Not because it was boring, but because he mentioned yawning & since yawning is subconsciously contagious i couldn't help it for a bit.

Honestly i think all this movie needed to be great was time. i liked the early part as you said, I found Matt and Pedro's friendship to be genuinly funny, the first battle with all the diffrent generals and such was epic, watching Matt and Pedro's characters kick ass together was awesome.

This movie was made by a Chinese production company with association with an American company, Directed by the same director of House of Flying Daggers. It's already made $220 Million because it was released in China first.
Corrupted at least the irony is a thing of beauty, seeing as how they're unintentionally giving you a visual cue to pair with the overall negative review & score Jeremy dishes out. Gets me rock hard

I've seen a few reviews for this movie and they all say the same thing: The first bit is cool, the army is cool, and the general setup is cool. Then Matt Damon shows up and everything goes wrong. But before we blame Matt Damon for everything bad about the movie, I have a theory about why it failed. Yes the needless insertion of a white actor is a problem, but I don't think it's the biggest one this movie has. As someone who likes to write fanfiction as a hobby, I frequently run into a problem where I come up with what I believe is a really cool idea or setup. But then it comes time to actually write interesting characters and a three-act plot into that setup and I realize that I only have the setup. That's what I think happened in this movie. Only instead of admitting he hit a brick wall, or instead of really working on integrating story and characters into this world, the guy who came up with the setup asked for money anyway. And he got paid. That is the biggest problem.
you guys are only getting this movie now? i watched this on theatres last year. i must say, it really wasn't that bad. Quite an exciting movie to catch to be honest.

There used to be a tabletop RPG about an oriental fantasy setting Great Wall that was attacked by demons in waves and that was defended by twelve(?) factions named after mythical beings with different armors and functions. Can't remember the name of that RPG, but this certainly seems similar to that, by what Jeremy is saying on this video.
It is so ironic that before the video started i had a trailer of the great wall with captions of positive feedback. Then i watch Jeremy's review right after to see its a would'nt remember in t-minus one day kind of film.

This movie was not good, but VERY entertaining. I wasn't bored one bit and if you wanna just sit back and watch a movie without critiquing every bit of it, then you'll enjoy this movie
Hey, you didnt mention Andy Lau, he is a veteran HK actor in there. And you know what, Andy Lau played the Matt Damon role in the original version of The Departed (Infernal Affairs).
why they build that mile of the wall?, maybe it is like attack on titan, they try always on the same spot, because it is the most human concentrated area, and as you said, capitol city is around the block, but that is the Only thing i can defend from this movie
Kane Aquino I saw the movie, and there's zero whitewashing, people are assuming there is. The white people are travelers to the wall from Europe, not supposed to be Asian at all.
Ok i get why the main star in movies that take place in Asia or are based on Asian material is always played by a caucasion actor,it makes the movie seem like it might be good cause it attracted big stars,which just happen to mostly be white people (because let's be real who would have cared about that Ghost in a Shell movie if it starred Jamie Chung,for example,instead of Scarlett Johannsen),but what's the point of the supporting cast also being white?
You would have to ask the Chinese production company, writer and director. My guess would be that they feel that having multiple non-Chinese characters not only makes it an easier sell in non-Chinese markets, but also gives them more chances to naturally lay out exposition by explaining things to them.
When watching the film i felt that an all asian cast would have helped this film, I enjoyed the colors and the monsters, but the characters of matt damon, pedro pascal and william dafoe just felt like they didn't belong in my opinion.This could have been a good film instead of mediocre.
Mike Duncan Chinese people can betray their own people. So it doesn't matter if the director was Chinese, it's all about money to them they don't care if they robbed an Asian rising stars big role. Can't have that happening in white Hollywood.
I really liked Great Wall. I mean sure it's not a Blu Ray movie for me but it definitely is a really good movie. I really liked all the battle scenes. Even the ending one. It was nice how the magnet is able to interrupt the signals from the Queen and how they used it in the end. No Alcohol required to watch this movie for me. I didn't forget it till now and it's been more than a week. The effects and creatures with their hive minds are also amazing. Especially those who stay with the queen and protect her with their shields(made from their head like an umbrella).

I just seen the "Great Wall"... I haven't been following movies for a while now... I really like it. If you think like the character of Matt Damon... It's Excellent... If you watch the movie as a "Realist", it's good....

I had fun watching the Great Wall. The beginning part of the movie was the best, middle part was kinda boring, the ending was alright. This movie is a lot better than most movies produced/directed in China.
I actually liked it way more than I expected I would! But it really needed that extra hour to build up any character development and relationships. I wish they showed more of the other generals, at least a bit. I liked the sassy archer guy and that other scarred one. Also I've seen it 2 times and still have no idea what the violet guys are doing. Even if it had to slow the pace more I wish they put a bit more time into it.
