I think the worst thing I ever had was some kind of fish noodle soup, which was also rotten. Or at least, it seemed rotten to me- it certainly smelled that way. It was some sort of Khmer (or at the very least SE Asian) dish I believe and was meant to be eaten at room temperature which made it even worse. I can force down a lot of things out of politeness, but that was one thing I simply could not finish. Thanks for watching!

August, This is a real thing. I swear on my gramma's grave (and handwritten recipe) that this is real. When I saw this, I immediately went and found the recipe to show my husband much to his horror, that this indeed is not made up. Not only my gramma's recipe card, but my mother's as well. I grew up eating this and lived to tell the tale. I think it's a midwestern thing from the 70's. We all must have had an Aunt Myrna lurking in our midst, contaminating our party food.

In the comments of one of the many videos on this recipe someone found a recipe from the 60s or 70s for "Party Salad" which contains several of the same ingredients as Aunt Myrna's Party Cheese Salad (I think it was jello + nuts + pineapple + whipped cream) The theory is that Aunt Myrna started going a bit batty and threw random ingredients into it.

This sounds like part of a recipe from the 70s…the ones mom would find in her Better Homes and Gardens magazine or one of the other magazines that were sold at that time. I remember my mom trying all kinds of jello recipes and they usually had cool whip added. They were made in Tupperware containers and served at all kinds of family functions. I recall one had shredded carrots. A lot had marshmallows. They also had a fancy sounding name with parfait or mousse in the name! Lol! Those were the days my friends.❤❤

This could be one of those unfortunate accidents of a recipe; when I was growing up my aunt wrote down the ingredients she needed for one of her desserts and also a few other items she needed from the store while she was there. Years later after she passed my cousins attempted to recreate the dessert not knowing the other ingredients weren’t apart of the recipe. It was absolutely HORRENDOUS but man did we have a great laugh about it after they realized the mistake 😂
@phatec
@phatec Год назад
As a chef, I can tell you what the Aunt was going for. They were going for a "cold set cheesecake" with lemon/pineapple flavor. I don't understand the coolwhip being added as that is mostly just made of oil and corn syrup, should have added heavy cream instead. I don't understand her recipe has cheddar but I guess it's to add more "cheese" flavor? And of course, I've no idea why the aunt's recipe has vegetables and pimento... Would make sense with fruit... Not going to lie though, you can in fact make an amazing cold set cheesecake with jello because you can use either corn starch or gelatin, so lemon jello would work extremely well. Gelatin and Corn starch prevent the cheese cake from cracking and hold it together, but most cold set recipes don't use it, doesn't mean you shouldn't or can't, because many recipes do use it.
@SwaggMessiah69
@SwaggMessiah69 Год назад
It's not cold set cheesecake. It's a recipe originating from jello recipes from the 50s-70s US inspired from European solidified broths such as Aspic. They take the form of savoury or sweet "salads", this somehow is a mixture of both. Some of this spread to other countries like Japan or Philippines. Japan ended up with harder jelly fish broths, the Philippines ended up with jello like deserts with sweet corn, and adding cheese (cheeses more similar to babybel not cheddar) to desserts.

Post WWII America was a crazy era. Women were expected to be perfect housewives and mothers and entertain at dinners and parties to help their husbands’ careers and be involved in their churches and children’s schools, ad nauseum. They were not happy or fulfilled, and everyone was taking tons of amphetamines. And many were drinking like fish. Plus everyone smoked or were around those who smoked. Which dulls the taste buds and sense of smell. Smell is a huge part of how we taste our food. So basically lots of recipes were made by passive aggressive cooks who were on speed, possibly drunk, and couldn’t taste as much as we can today. Companies were also writing cookbooks and pamphlets to show people what to do with their products. A lot of recipes were submitted by customers and voted on. Or included because they were extreme and would make people want to get that specific publication to see the weird recipes. So gelatin companies (there used to be more) could have been trolling people for more engagement. I grew up in the 80s and saw a bunch of weird Jello creations. A lot of people thought the recipes were crazy back then. Only sweet ones were popular.

This may sound crazy, but I think I understand the idea behind the dish: It looks like the recipe is trying to make a casserole version of a cheeseball that doesn't require a serving knife. If that's the goal, there are a few fixes for sure that would probably help this dish: 1. Substitute the pepper and pimento with spices like minced garlic and paprika. Get the flavor profile without the odd textures. 2. Drop the cool whip and jello and instead whip heavy cream to medium peaks, and fold it into the mixture. That should make it easier to dip while making it creamier. 3. Add lime zest and/or fresh lime juice to help cut through the fat from the cream, cheese, and cream cheese. 4. For assembly, I'd mix the cheese in with mixture and instead top with the chopped nuts (preferably pecans), making it resemble a casserole version of a cheeseball. I might try making this and let y'all know if it's any good.

I feel like it must be that Aunty Myrna used to make those awful Jello Salads in the 50s and 60s, and she developed a habit from there, then tried to make the dish more like a dessert over time by adding more sweet ingredients.

I asked ChatGPT to tell me the story of August the duck, this is what it said: Once upon a time, there lived a duck named August. He was an ordinary duck that lived in the small pond at the edge of town. Every day he would waddle around, looking for food and enjoying the peacefulness of his pond. One day, a gust of wind blew through the pond, carrying a large brown paper bag. August flapped his wings and chased after the bag, determined to investigate. When he opened it, he found a stuffed toy duck inside. August was delighted. He named the toy duck "Augustina" and they became the best of friends. Everywhere August went, Augustina followed him, and August enjoyed having a companion. One day, August was out looking for food when he came across an old boat. He hopped inside and soon discovered it was the home of a family of beavers. August was scared, but the beavers were friendly and offered to share their home with him. August stayed with the beavers and soon became part of their family. He taught them how to swim and they taught him how to build dams. August also took Augustina with him and she was like a sister to the beavers. August's life was full of adventure and friendship and he was happy. He never forgot the kindness of the beavers and he continued to live with them for many years until one day, he realized it was time for him to fly away and explore the world. So, August and Augustina said goodbye to their friends and set off into the sky, never to be seen again

I wonder if Aunt Myrna was one of those people who just didn't want to be stuck with being the host for family gatherings, so she comes up with exceptionally distressing food dishes to make the rest of the family collectively decide "nope.... anyone but her." Galaxy brain move, if so.

The answer to "why" is simply the same reason why Jack always adds randomly small amounts of greens to all his creations...so he can have a reason to call it a "salad"
