We all have a superpower we can use at any time, we just need to learn what it is and how to use it. I try to help.

I'm struggling myself with these topics, especially loneliness. Going out and doing things used to help, but now I just don't have the energy for it anymore. Searching for work has also been challenging as a UX designer, facing repeated rejections. I've been to the UK once, thinking that loneliness would improve compared to Belgium, but I felt even lonelier. Thanks for creating these videos, they make life a bit more bearable.

Glad they're helping in some way. On the rejection topic - I work in sales and get rejected a LOT! One thing I was told by a manager a long time ago which really helped - "They're not rejecting you, they're rejecting the offer" - made me feel much better when I didn't take it personally. Also, try to focus on the process rather the results. I know job-hunting sucks and can be soul destroying so instead of focusing only on the end result of getting a job, focus on the day-to-day activities such as applying for jobs, doing interviews, revising your CV etc. It's much easier to feel motivated when you praise yourself for these things, because they're just as important.

Being consistent is hard for me but hopefully I can learn it from you keeping posting on RU-vid as I guess you chose option 2.

What I would suggest, and what I forgot to mention in this video, is set a goal that you want to work towards, then set a target so small you have no excuse not to do it. If you're trying to get in shape for instance, just aim to do one pushup every day and that's it. I bet you'll find you just naturally start to do more over time.

Love your raw honesty, its been so inspiring to follow. How is your loneliness now? You seem like a nice bloke, hope you're ok! I can relate to some of your videos here.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Social life still isn't where I'd like it but I'm OK with that. I feel like now I've set myself some ambitious goals and got a mind on the future, I'm less focused on my social life and more on laying foundations for future-me.

I have a lot going on right now - so commitment to my studies seems the most prominent but I would love to do more fitness. Measuring yourself is a great way to track gains - even without literally measuring and doing things by like gradually increasing reps, or spending longer running or for further are great measures in of itself.
@JayWallace
@JayWallace 10 месяцев назад
Yeah great point actually, you can measure your progress as well as the results. Damn, wish I'd have mentioned that in the vid! Thanks for the insight

Being consistent is one thing I've struggled with doing as well. I think it's partially because of laziness, the monumental task of achieving the things I want to set out to do, and just trying to keep myself accountable. Right now, I don't work and have been dedicating my free time (what little I have as a stay-at-home dad) to learning Japanese and game development. I've been doing each now for far longer than I care to admit with not much to show for it. Or that's my feeling. I know when I look back I can see how far I've come, but it's one of those things where all I did was get to the base of Everest and I still have the rest of the mountain to climb. I know a lot of people say not to compare yourself to others and only compare yourself to your past self. I really do try hard to do that, but even that is hard sometimes. Not having as defined metrics for comparison makes it really difficult. I think I'm getting better though. I try to do a little bit every day at the very least and hopefully that will keep me honest to myself and create a consistent habit for the future.

Thanks for sharing and I think you make a really good point there, it's important to look back and realise how far you've already come. I'm going to make a video on a topic similar to this. What you'll find is that, when you consider how many people there are in the world and how many different hobbies and careers they could be doing, you're probably in the top 10% of the world with the knowledge you already have. The problem is, social media serves us more of what we like and so we get the impression that everyone else is doing the same thing as us and so we feel so far behind compared to everyone else. On another note, try to find someone to keep you accountable or maybe invest in a course that has modules you can complete. This kind of linear progression makes is easy to see how far you've come. Also, I think there are apps/services out there that will pair you with a native speaker who wants to learn your language too, it's a win-win for both parties then, could be a fun way to learn.

@@JayWallace Yeah, I think you're absolutely right about social media. I follow a lot of game dev and language learning channels. And these can work to help with motivation but sometimes it's a double-edged sword. It gets too easy to be like, "Oh, look that guy is so good at speaking Japanese and he's only been studying for a year." I try to remind myself that their situation and my own are not the same. Some people take to these things quicker than others and some people have a lot more time or willingness to dedicate time to their chosen activities. And I actually have done that recently! I started taking some tutoring lessons with a native speaker. It's only a couple times a month and it's not that long per session. But I think it's been helping to keep me accountable. I want to make sure I keep on studying so that I can keep showing progress. Also, no idea how your switch to daily vlog videos will impact your channel but I have been enjoying them. They're perfect listening to material for when I'm doing things and they've been helpful. I appreciate your willingness to share your thoughts and experiences. Anyway, keep it up, man!

I'm in a situation where I need to learn Swedish quite quickly so I've promised myself to study every single day for a one full year, even just for 15 min. per day. Hopefully it's worth the effort, learning a new language is a long and tedious process... Staying consistent is the key in my experience yet it's truly boring sometimes 😅 We just got our first fresh powdery snow here and everything looks magical!
@JayWallace

That's a great goal to work towards, us Brits can be quite lazy with other languages I have to admit, would love to learn French or Italian. I think you've got it right, set a minimum achievable target, like 15 mins a day and as long as you're doing that, you're hitting your goals. I found the same with reading - if I set the minimum so low, like 1 page a day, that I have no excuse NOT to do it and by the time I sit down to read, I often end up reading a lot more. Sounds beautiful!

For me it’s: Carrying on going swimming each week Get myself to more new places especially outside of the UK Try and get back into the excel side of things again as I’ve neglected that for a while

Nice, thanks for sharing. If I ever struggle with my goals I find it a good idea to be really specific about what I want to achieve and what success looks like. For instance you say you want to go to more places outside the UK - where exactly? and when do you want to go? What month/what day? The more specific, the more likely it is to happen.

@@JayWallace I’ve started booking for a trip around Ireland next June which I’m really looking forward to. Even though they drive on the left like we do I’m going to use it a tester on how I get on outside the UK as I’m also in the process of planning a roadtrip for 2025 which will see me go to countries in Scandinavia along with some other ones that I’m still deciding on
