John Wayne's 1968 flag-waving film "The Green Berets" offered a response to increasingly negative press coverage of the war in Vietnam. Criticism of the war was equated with hatred of the country: "Love It or Leave It", the war's supporters' bumper stickers read. Mounting doubts from the mainstream press about the war's goals and prospects were depicted as anti-American. But other events of 1968 marked it as the turning point in many Americans' perceptions of the war.
