I don’t know if it’s because of the hat, but you really reminded me of Violet Harmon in this video!

I think the reason I and many other people consider this movie racist is because it perpetuates racist stereotypes about indigenous people. The Amazon Watch, a nonprofit organization that works to protect the rain forest and the rights of indigenous people fear that the movie is going to help the Peruvian government to introduce policies that will force contact with the indigenous tribes of the rain forest. Eli Roth even said that motivation for the film came from pissing off SJW's.

its racist in the sense that these tribes result to cannibalism which is one of the rarest things (as you mention there are no tribes in the amazon who do this) they are deemed as "primitive" and as "savages" i study anthropology and htis really reflects how some early findings by anthropologists were very similar to this situation where they label the tribes and people as being less than and thats exactly what this film does. i personally think eli was mocking this old armchair type mentality but its still very problematic as a topic.

in a sense, most horror films are pretty racist when it comes to cannibalism. I don't believe this film was racist at all, nor did it paint anybody in a bad light other than the protesters themselves ("don't think, act ") which was exactly what Eli was trying to do. if people are going to look at it from that level, then it can be argued that tobe Hooper was attacking lower class in Texas. pretty ridiculous, yes? however this film is a piece of fictional work, whereas the Texas chainsaw massacre was said to be based on " true events " when it was loosely based on the serial killer ed gein and he was from Wisconsin - not Texas. poor people of Texas, right?

This movie was not meant to be realistic. It is a horror film. Racism=discrimination. No one was being discriminated against. You don't see white people flipping out over Hostile and how that "demonizes" whites. Just an example.

The gore was pretty phenomenal. I honestly turned away at a few points, which I never do. Honestly though, I felt that the plot was very muddy and almost didn't justify an entire movie? It was almost too convoluted. All in all, it was a solid B-. Also, I absolutely love your cardigan!

I also had super high expectations for this because I knew that Eli Roth was really inspired by Cannibal Holocaust (one of the most fucked up, disturbing movies I've ever seen). It didn't live up to my high hopes but I did enjoy it and found myself laughing quite a bit (when she fell in the river...I still crack up at the thought). Sky Ferreira's acting was pretty comical, too. Anyway I guess I'm just a gross human being because I could have used about 90% more gore to be truly shocked

The thing I was most disturbed by in the film was the fact that it seemed racist. The actors were from a real tribe, so I'm not sure if that makes it better... it was just pretty uncomfortable, and not in a good way. I really hate the stereotype that "undiscovered tribes" are dangerous or cannibals. Cannibalism has been a tradition in some civilizations, but not like this. Not like we think. There were rituals involving eating dead relatives or things like that, but I don't think that's a thing anymore. It's a VERY overblown fear that just won't happen to you. I would've preferred this film be about a cannibalistic serial killer. That actually could happen. I'm not the kind of person who looks for racism either; this film just felt pretty damn insensitive to me. Other than that, I didn't find this movie scary at all. This just wouldn't happen. If I crashed in the Amazon, I'd be more worried about diseases and parasites than cannibalism. Oh, and the bugs. Ugh, the bugs. Also, they wouldn't force her to have FGM. That's totally ridiculous. I kind of liked that she lied about the tribe; it's because it was a tribute to Cannibal Holocaust (I think?). I think she didn't want the kid who helped her to get killed. Maybe, idk. It was more interesting and confusing than frustrating. The credits scene was stupid af, though. Weirdly, despite all this, I did somewhat enjoy this film. I'd give it a 5/10. It is kind of cool that it was actually filmed in the Amazon; the scenery was actually stunning. I just wish it was scarier. Like, as disgusting as this is, I wish that one of them had contracted a disease or something, because that is an actual threat in the Amazon. Or just go ALL OUT on the gore like they did with Cabin Fever. The gore was very underwhelming, like I was eating while watching this and don't regret it. Maybe I'm just morbid/ have a strong stomach idk. Also, this video is super old, so I doubt anyone will even see this lol I'm just revisiting my love of horror films. I agree with her decision to leave the leader behind. He was such a jerk that he deserved it. Again, I am morbid af. It's also because of her safety; what if she DID save him and he screwed her over again or double-crossed her somehow? He also got them into this situation and the m@sterbation scene was really gross (the second grossest part after the racism).

I actually don't really like "gore" movies that much, but I've gotten more into them lately. I tend to like to be more creeped out than disturbed I guess. I'm glad I didn't see it in theaters, but I plan to watch it at some point. And I think a good video idea would be similar to how people should get into horror, but with gory movies. I think I've just seen too messed up gory movies too soon or just crappy ones I didn't enjoy.

i did rlly enjoy the movie (overall as a gore horror movie). it messed with my mind which i like movies to do n which makes a movie become my favourites in the horror genre. but the racism does anger me, bc it's placing a stereotype on a tribe that irl probably try to stay safe n away from violence involving humans (but I'm not fully acknowledged on tribes n the lifestyle in rainforests as such so). but i did enjoy this movie n this review. sarah has amazing views n opinions on horror movies n it's so entertaining to see her review horror movies I've enjoyed/watched.

and to add to the thing you mentioned about the film being racist, yes i do see it as having racist tendencies. similar to your review of the visit (you mentioned the film gave the mentally ill a bad name) green inferno kind of does the same thing except with this peruvian tribe, or any tribe. an ignorant person could walk out of this movie believing that all native tribes are terrible cannibals who attack those who come on their land just because of how this movie portrayed them i hope this helps!

And when I say a revenge thing I mean like Papua New Guinea there was a story someone told about a man who came and killed one of the women in the tribe so they had the reader AKA the shaman find out who the man was then they went to the tribe the man was part of and took him and killed him and ate him to assure his soul couldn't come back and haunt the tribe and its people there was a trial between both tribes before this even happened and there came to be a conclusion that the man they assumed was guilty by the shamans foresight was guilty and the tribe the man was part of let the other tribe have him its basically how we have the death sentence in jail except they took him killed him and ate him they also say they killed the person quick they never let them suffer then they ground his bones into dust and buried them under a stone grave to better assure his soul couldn't escape and haunt the tribe they even go on to say very rarely did they ever use human bones as weaponry because animals bones were stronger and more effective and more efficient that and they didn't want the burden of the person soul to haunt them and the tribe and if they did use human bones they'd have the shaman do a special ritual to keep the soul of the person from haunting them and the tribe that's something I've watched from a tribe who's actually told this story and they were elders about in their 60s or 70s maybe older they just looked like they were in their 60s or 70s I could be wrong about that one of the tribes member said he was a kid when he saw it happen

I really want to watch this movie! since I haven't seen it I don't have an opinion with regards to racism but, in every film there's a bad guy, so then all movies would be racist and offensive to a specific group, I think it's just what happens in films, and sometimes, although it is good to make observations, we need to take it less seriusly

There are cannibals in the amazon tho, movies about cannibal tribes are not racist. Of course they don't torture or make a group of people hostages watching each other die. But also people shouldn't walk alone in certain areas of the amazon, that's why people who lives in states near the area created creepy ass folclores hundreds of years ago, so kids wouldn't go in the forest. Now days people think everything is racist, if I make a movie in Angola and there are people with brown skin speaking Portuguese in the movie someone is going to say that the movie is racist because it didn't include all the skin colors that Angola has.
