okay so the shadow at 07:09 wasn't as noticeable after exporting but I blame the crap lighting for the weird shadowy waves happening.

my mom was an identical twin and had "feelings" all the time but once her sister died those completely went away so I don't knowwwwww

So was there, like, a reason that her sister supposedly committed suicide all the way in Japan in this forest?? I don't mean to be one of those people and I don't mean to be offensive if it comes off that way but honestly it _really_ annoys me when the plot is based around some country's culture (other than the U.S.) and the main character is a Caucasian American, especially when there is no good reason for it.. I just don't know what the point is? Almost like, why can't the main character be Japanese or from whatever country that movie's plot is based? It's just one of the things that kind of annoys me... VICE made a really interesting mini documentary called "Suicide Forest in Japan" off of this forest, I recommend it to anyone interested! It's not scary but a bit melancholic, which is appropriate for something like this, I think.
@Kahula98982

idk if this answers your question but from what I remember, the main character's sister is a teacher in Japan or something like that. but yeah, I agree that the main character should've just been Japanese

I really liked the idea of the forest making you question what was actually real. And the part with guy did have me fooled for awhile just because of that first look he has when she goes to lay down in the tent. However I did think it relied heavily on jump scares, none of the scares really stayed with me after I left the theater.

I'm really bad with anything scary because I'm a really jumpy person but one of my friends loves them. Every so often I decide to try to watch them again and this movie was one of those times. I broke my foot and was sleeping over so we were ready to go to sleep and I took my boot off to let it breathe for a bit before I had to put it back on (I had to sleep in it). There were so many spots that I freaked out and jumped throughout the movie that I had to take my pain meds and put my boot back on because each jump would move it. My friend was overall unphased but from a newbie, easily scared pov, it was terrifying.

I guess it depends who you are. I've grown up in the country in the middle of a forest. When it get dark, it gets DARK, and suddenly your mind really will start playing tricks on you. Expecting logic from an unhinged mind is a fruitless endeavor. Yeah, she didn't act natural, but the forest had driven her crazy. And don't expect logic when your loved one is in danger, I've know people who would've taken on a rampaging bear with a broken beer bottle, and damn the logic, if a loved one was in danger. I loved this movie and have seen it several times, and I don't think it ever played in a theatre around here.

I HATE jump scares! It's like a "cheat" in the horror industry and make me feel so disrespected as a viewer! You should definitely check out/review "We are What We Are" (on Netflix right now)- amazing, character-driven psychological horror. No cheap thrills in this one..just finished it and I was blown away. PS- don't watch the trailer first- it gives too much away (as they do)

okay but I'm just thinking that for a place that is so sad and has so much meaning as an area known for being the suicide forest it's kinda disrespectful for a bunch of (mostly) white peeps to go over and exploit it for a (not gr8)horror flick

This film was what I expected the Blair Witch Project to be - I liked it a whole lot more although I did find the casting of all the main characters as Westerners annoying. It contributes to the "Othering" of different cultures which is always problematic. I always use your videos to dig up horrors I haven't seen yet Sarah, so thank you! Keep up the awesome work

+Isa N I agree!! Like not only are they capitalizing on a tragedy but they didn't even make it about Japanese people in the forest it had to be about some white girl?? I feel like this movie perpetuates the stereotype that Asian people are too efficient to have feelings
@alinagolovina1235
@alinagolovina1235 8 лет назад
+Isa N not in the same context at all. 9/11 people murdered against their will, suicide forest people who choose to commit suicide. two different things, pretty ignorant for you to even bring those two together.
@orenji196
@orenji196 8 лет назад
+Alina Golovina So if someone is depressed or mentally ill, and takes their own life, they deserve to be mocked in a film and portrayed as a demon? How would you feel if that was one of your family members? Pretty ignorant of you to say that because people chose to commit suicide, they deserve to be put in a film and made out to be "demons" for cheap scares. Doesn't matter if it's not the same thing as 9/11, it's still a shitty thing for them to capitalize on other people's pain.
@markmark6408
@markmark6408 6 лет назад
I suspect that most of the people here are complaining even though they didn't see the movie. By the logic that is shoveled out here, then we shouldn't make any war movies, people died in battle; no movies set any real towns/cities, people died there; no westerns, people died back then, and for ghod's sake, no horror, or mystery movies. Good Lord, exploitation, exploitation, exploitation. I've had more than my share of relatives die in hospitals, that doesn't mean that hospitals should be banned from having movies made about them. People get offended by way too much nowadays.

I remembered you reviewed this one so I went straight to your channel after watching it to see if you felt the same way that I did. lol I was really hopeful for this one after watching the preview (isn't that always the way) but it did not scare me. I didn't jump for any of the jump scares which is very rare and I also thought the ending was pretty lame. I may check out the other movies that you mentioned are based on the same forest. Maybe one of them will be scary. :/

I don't understand why this movie would be offensive to you, your not Japanese or have had a family member that commuted suicide there. I also think that if they movie had ended the way you talked about then it would really be offensive and not just something that is speculated to be offensive since your suggestion would make it that all the people who choose to die there were never actually sad enough to end their lives. While in theory you suggested end would be more interesting however it would be completely disrespectful to the families of the victims and the lack of mental health awareness amongst Asia. This is what I think.

@windlives
@windlives 8 лет назад
+ryan jones Yeah but every time someone is killed in a movie, are you going to say it's offensive to people who have had other people in their life murderer? I understand what you're trying to say but there's is always going to be a group of people offended by something so there's really no avoiding it.
@yunacatlife
@yunacatlife 8 лет назад
ryan jones You can be empathetic and understand the reasons why something is offensive but you don't know exactly how those people are feeling. In particular to this movie and the way she said "I didn't find this movie offensive" she's not even being empathetic in any sense since she's referring to only herself and only briefly mentioned the controversy over the movie, clearly pointing towards the fact that she's probably didn't research that much about. No hate on her or you, just looking at things critically.

+lebronjames if you want to be technical yes you can-- in situations where things are based on actual events. In can be done in bad taste much like this movie was so yes i can say for an issue in Japan that is still relevant I can say that a lack of empathy is shown. It doesn't matter if I don't know exactly what they were feeling obviously if suicide was the result then they weren't in a good place anyone could relate to that and feel someone's pain.

there's a forest in japan where japanese people commit suicide because of the taboo on mental health in japanese culture and western white people are like "hmmm how can i make this about ME?" would have been way better if it was about an actual native japanese person suffering under the horror of ableism and struggling with mental health issues and focusing on that aspect of it and maybe being chased by the oni in the forest. that would have been badass
