The Gritty Undead Survival RPG That Just Keeps Growing 

RU-vid jump scared me half to death. Where you heard the noise at 5:35 it flicked away to an ad, where the opening scene was a guy yelling "Yeehaw" and swinging his arms.

FYI; you can put backpacks into backpacks - infinitely right now. Will be changed in the future, and there are specific containers for meds, food (and drink), crafting materials etc.

I think the fact that the options menu is so well fleshed out is a good sign. Is that weird? I don't like it when games don't have a lot of customizable options. This game is still pretty rough around the edges, but from the way Splat described the dev's work schedule on this game, it sounds like they really care and have clear goals they are working toward. That, to me, is also a good sign.

Putting the barbed wire facing the wrong direction was painful. I still love Splat. You are always hurt by the ones you love.

This game looks great but at the 5:40(ish) mark when you stopped talking and asked "What's that noise?" - someone outside my house has just started hammering. Perfect timing - in my world anyway :)

I wish these games could find a way to add real weight to the melee combat. Stagger and knockback that lasts for more than a split second. Maybe some limb-chopping for the bladed stuff. Or at least put in something like a kick, to get a slight bit of space to work with.

This one really reminds me of Unturned. I've always been surprised Unturned never saw more love

I'm a big fan of the Synty low poly assets used in this game.

When it becomes more of a game and less of a early early early alpha... and they add coop ! I'm gonna be addicted

It's looking pretty good!! The guns seems to have some oomph to them, I like how the damage is displayed and the xp is displayed, and LOVE the inventory system. I'm intrigued!

So this seems to be the middle path between day Z and unturned

A lot of game critics haven't the first clue about game development but make harsh criticisms about issues that early access games have. The fact that you know synty studios shows you know a thing or two about indie game development as a whole. well done

Played this after seeing an @drawingpin playthough. Solid and fun game (even with the issues). Developer was pretty on top of updates (the prison issues for example). The secure containers are the only thing that stays on your corpse when you die.

Drop the brown weapons, keep the mags. Acog the aug and you are fine to go. I really enjoyed this game. So far I have put 139hrs into it and I think your first review was what intrigued me, so thanks! =)

Hey splattercat, you are one of the oldest watched youtubers i watch and ive been watching for at least 12 years now, im not much into indie games but ill always come back to see what you are up to every once in a while, and i love this zombie game

Thank you for finally coming back to this gem! I've found a way to make this game pretty challenging. Go into game settings and turn all loot to rare and change zombie spawn to max, turn the health down to compensate. Turn animals to max and turn stamina regen up and drain up a bit. I turn vehicles off as well. I turn hunger/thirst drain down a bit too. It's made the game a true survival experience. I've been talking with the devs on the changes and I like to believe the new "apocalypse" setting is based off that suggestion.

I have to admit the ad about lard at the beginning had me fascinated 😊

The boxy minecraft esthetic look not only looks silly but just detracts from any feelings of terror, fear or sense of foreboding when playing other zombie games.

You where one of the first Gaming YTer I watched, came back after a year or 2 and you still got it

I could've swore I had this game in my library and was going crazy trying to find it, even checking my purchase history to double check that I did buy it. Turns out it was another game that uses the same asset pack, Deadpoly. The melee is pretty bad in that one too.

FYI Splat it's Tap (the magazine to seat it), Rack (the slide or bolt to clear an ammunition-based malfunction), BANG.

Dude has pretty good trigger discipline with the Mosin, as he's reloading you see his finger alongside the stock :)

Mosin uses 7.62x54R, which is slightly smaller than a .30-06

A tip: I think if you crouch your melee actually is slightly faster, so if you continously crouch and strafe right you should be able to avoid getting hit and have slightly higher DPS. Been playing this quite a bit, despite the generic assets, it's actually a pretty fun game! I like that Tarkov elements appear in more games these days hehe. The only thing I don't like is how every thing respawns when you reload. I guess it could just be the dark souls of save systems xD.

Backpack Inception Simulator. 11/10

Place bandages/rad pills etc on the hot bar 6-7-8 to heal on the run and not have to dig for them. The revolver and hunting rifles w/o mags will take ammo direct from top inv (( not nested inside containers/packs etc ) like pockets etc

There is another game called Fargone, it is similar to this game in most ways since they use similar assets but the developer is taking an approach similar to s.t.a.l.k.e.r. in my opinion, an RPG with a sort of story for anyone who doesn't know the series. I have heard from the developer of Fargone that yes both it and SurrounDead look similar in style but he wants to take a different direction with it, he is a big fan of SurrounDead himself. Both games are phenomenal in there own forms, and as with all early access games, it just needs some love and some time and i am sure both games will hold a special spot in most peoples library's, even though i don't play it as much right now because i am waiting for more updates, i never uninstall it and always keep it updated when it has one, both games are on my need to play list.

i love this game. being able to make it as hard or as easy as possible is great. most of the time i just like to wander around and loot things and kill some zombies. pretty relaxing

The melee combat would be way more satisfying if you could dodge,push and even do some special moves like stealth kill a zombie with a knife,knock zombies back with a 2 handed weapon etc

This game needs multiplayer

Well, bought it both because of this video, and because it is on sale right now. First two lives weren't exactly great - got hit with a bleed on both and didn't last too long afterwards. Third life though, found a hidden cache with armor, a big backpack, and a legendary katana that basically carried me... up until I got surprised by a bear and mauled to death. And not long after I'd found my first drivable vehicle too. Thankfully, my fourth life spawned close to where my third ended, and I managed to scavenge enough gear to sneak to my corpse and re-equip myself... whereupon the bear mauled me again. Fifth life, and current one after ~4 hours of play, I found the refilled cache, with armor, bigger backpack (7x8) and a gun, and made the trek to my previous two bodies. This time, I made sure to kill the bear before approaching, and reclaimed the legendary katana. Re-equiped everything, filled the storage of my vehicle, and drove off to the nearby trader to sell loot and setup my first base. Great fun so far, despite the missing features and janky melee.

i love this game so much im lvl 20 and enjoying it so far cant wait for future updates

This game is very similar to walking zombie 2 aside from being fully open world, 3rdPS instead of FPS. Art style, damage texts, partial inventory menu and fighting/shooting resembles that of walking zombie 2.

All zombies swing with their right arm so if you circle around their left (to the right) while hitting them, you wont get hit. Just don't outpace them as they turn towards you or they can hit you

You can actually go inside the tent especially the bigger tents to place your bedroll inside

Skill tree doesn't make a game RPG just by being there. It's just progression system. RPG is about decisions, choices and consequences.

tips for killing zombies or lore them out climb up on the van and shoot one bullet to call the zombies and kill it with long melee weapon or use your vehicle to lore them out of the area to loot items just horn until they follow you best way to save alot of ammo :)

This game is amazingly frustrating when you're just starting - the melee is brutal.

Waiting on controller support for this game. I played about 3 hours of it with community controller bindings but the game still feels awkward using it. Looking forward to where this game goes though.

Hunting Hatchet is the best weapon in the game because of it's speed

If melee is a problem, you can change the 3rd person camera offset to make it better

OK, I can't take it anymore. .45 Winchester? That implies the old .45 Winchester Magnum, a rimless autopistol round. Here we have a revolver. With a vent rib. Which implies Colt Python or Anaconda. The latter was (and is again) a large bore revolver and although I'd love such a thing in .45 WinMag, nothing of the sort was ever made. Yet. CZ/Colt? Listening? I'm good for two. That's a hint.

I think what we all want is a new PvE version of H1Z1’s Just Survive … really miss that one but State of Decay sorta helped fill that void.

I feel like State of Decay set the bar so high on zombie survival it is hard to enjoy other ones.

this game is easy to make... as a dev, i can see they flipping synty assents, not even walking animations are on point!, you floating with the axe! 16:00, i will say that inventories and crafting system are a pain in the ass, kudos to that, other than that i dont really see the point of making a game that already exist out of assets that another company made, just create a new game fellas!, we are tired of battle royales and shit, be creative!, this is the new autotune for games!

Jigsaw Inventory System spotted, sadly they didn't even change the default layout much and it looks like they are using the default weapon system. Sad, hopefully they put some more work into it instead of just mashing assets together.

This looks exactly like Unturned, but the player and zombies look better.

I gave Surroundead a try after watching the previous video (back in October, so a while after it was posted). I had been hoping one of these Synty low-poly survival games would turn out nicely, so I could have something other than Unturned for my low-poly zombie survivaling (as neat as Unturned is, the Roblox-like aesthetic frustrates me), and something other than 7 Days To Die (though A21 is feeling pretty good). it's nice that they've filled the map a bit, since there really wasn't much going on. It's disappointing to hear that melee combat hasn't been improved *at all*. The crosshair is still meaningless, and while timing swings to cancel zombie attacks seems helpful (I'm not sure if this was a thing when I last played, I just remember it feeling random) it seems like melee is still about mashing left-click and trading blows. That the developer is talking about endgame content while melee is as bad as it was in October, or even a full year back, is concerning. That said, some of the updates it's received are a bit encouraging. Adjustable loot availability is particularly nice, customization is appreciated in sandbox games. More activities beyond shooting zombies and scavenging is good. The price was lowered, and it's also half-off right now... May be time to give it another look.
