That noise haunts me. Fun story: my friend watched this at a sleepover and she woke up in the middle of the night and heard that noise - someone was making the noise in their sleep. She FREAKED.
Girl same! The noise always makes me cringe and freaks me out, even as an adult. I remember watching it with my mom when I was 10. I love horror movies, but man.... I regret this one. XD
@@whitenoisereacts see the genius behind a horror film is that you can show anything you want you can push the envelope as far as you want if you want proof of that watch the movie *MARTYRS* the French version not the American version but the French version....
Kayako is the scariest ghost for me. Sure there are objectively more threatening entities out there, but what makes her special is that there is no escape from her. The scares don't just happen in a scary place. You can go about your daily comfortable life feeling totally safe and she will be there, hunting for you. Waiting for an opportunity to grab you, which WILL come eventually. This inevitable, omnipresent sense of doom mixed with the mundane is what REALLY freaks me out about her.
Another thing is you can't even tell what's real when you have Kayako's curse, the longer you survive the more delusional you get and the safer you think you are the more danger you're actually in, she turns your comfort into ash in your mouth and it's no longer about surviving it's about anticipating death. Most ghosts usually try to solicit something from you, they want something so they haunt you until you're unhinged enough to give it up, Kayako just wants you to die.
People often compare her to her counterpart, Sadako from the Ring. Sadako will scare you dead, sure. But Kayako will visit you in your bed, even when you're not in Japan, snatch you to another dimension, rip your jaw off, and return you to the world of the living as a jawless revenant. That's a lot.
@@nitrokid The thing is tho, Sadako is a Onryo(Spirit) that revolve her curse like a smallpox virus that normally give the human victims a heart attack and then died. In cases like if you happen to watch the videotape thus Sadako will allegedly choose you as her playtoy, she does things like what Kayako is doing until either you lucky enough to commit suicide yourself or driven to insanity no way to escape The movie Sadako however is different from the book, the movie Sadako are much much more powerful. One of her few powers is that she can get into your dream and burn all images from mind, and then inflict so much fear images that your real body dies but your dreams will keep going forever. She can also manipulate the weather to cause typhoon in japan, and also able to manipulate our DNA creating the offspring of ourselves for her own army to spread the virus. One unique thing about Kayako and Sadako was that unlike the regular onryo, they are able to create their own dimension to torture the souls instead of dragging you to afterlife. The latest movie Sadako had seem to be pushing towards the concept of becoming so powerful than any spirit killer, that she's turning into a cosmic horror. Sadako also absorbed Kayako's power in the end and fused it with Yuri, therefore her new abilities can literally cause apocalypse close to world end. This horror narrative of becoming overpowered broken seem to be getting trendy nowadays, we can see it in Shin Godzilla as well
@@joesama3282 welp I'd say that book Sadako is more powerfull as she can spread her virus-curse and reborn around the world and bring the world to apocalypse. Every cursed can sense her presence everywhere, Sadako can manipulate DNA and her curse can evolve like a virus and because of that Asakawa's family died even if they fulfill the conditions pf her curse. And because of her ressurection and spreading of her curse-virus the humanity in the future created virtual simulation for finding the cure of the curse
@@archamtracovich8783 I think you got that mixed up or you read some latest version of the novel, because the powers you stated is within the movie Sadako. The original book Sadako revolve her power with smallpox, therefore she could not kill with her mind alone but had to fuse her abilities with a virus. Along the way there's the mixed between the movie and book Sadako's power ability. It was all said in the wiki and long time readers as well, just search for it
The grudge makes the last sound that is heard before they die. The mom has that croaking sound cause her husband broke her neck, and the boy has the sound of the cat screaming cause the dad drowned him with the cat and that was the last sound made.
I've never heard one. I have had the unfortunate privilege of having heard a death gasp though. The sound of someone gasping for breath over and over the time between gasps getting longer and longer.....then it just..... stops. It's the kinda thing that haunts ya.
Japanese horror has a few rules for their ghosts… One: you don’t “makes a deal” with the ghosts, they are a force of nature. Two: Every ghost has its rules and it’s triggers. For The Ring is the VHS. For The Grudge is the house. Kayako Will mercilessly go hunting everyone that enters the house…
Some fun facts: The reason the boy meows is because he had such a strong connection to his pet cat in life that after his death he can only make that sound which is likely the last sound he heard as he died. As for the grudge sound itself that is called death rattle which occurs sometimes with people as they die & in this case the lady had her neck snapped but wasn't quite dead yet so that was the last sound she made & heard as she died. So just like her son it became the only sound she can make in death
I watched this movie probably when I was around 6 or 7 (my older cousins wanted to watch it and of course I wanted to keep up with them :/) but the noise that she made in that movie HAUNTED me for yearsss. And that shower scene with the hand too- I literally was scared every time I showered lol
You should do more Asian horror. The American remakes are pretty sub-par, though the American version of the Ring was decent. There are so many good Asian horror movies you can watch: Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, Noroi: The Curse, The Wailing and Dark Waters.
Add Shutter to that list! That last scene haunted me for days. I was also SO traumatized by One Missed Call, but to be fair I was still a little kid when I watched it.
I like The Eye as well, but I don't remember if I preferred the original Japanese version or the American remake... I got them all on DVD. My memory sucks.
I totally agree with the previous comment about watching Skeleton Key, I would LOVE for you to watch Stay Alive, it's about a video game with a hidden curse where the way you die in the game is how you die in real life, it's an "oldie" in my eyes but I enjoy it and I think you would too!
Me and my friend saw this in theaters. It was storming out and just as the first scene ended BOOM thunder and we knocked heads. Kinda took us out but I love that movie
@@squeegiebeckenheim8476 🤣🤣🤣 omg that reminds me of after I watched a quiet place, I stepped out the theater and the bus brakes were so loud I stopped walking lmao
What made this movie and the original so scary for me is how the curse spreads. It starts in the house, then everyone and anyone that goes in is not only cursed to die but they also spread the curse to wherever they drop dead, where they live where they work, and even to their loved ones who in turn keep spreading the curse. If this curse was real, the world would end. And we don't know if destroying the original house stops the curse since it's never happened. I saw all the sequels years ago and one of them ends with Japan being a total deserted wasteland.
First time I watched this was in the theater and it was super crowded; my sister was to my right and a stranger was to my left with her boyfriend to her left. Sister and BF unphased but the girlfriend and I, two total strangers, were huddled in the middle united by fear. Lol Then her boyfriend grabbed my ankle on the way out of the theater and I screamed bloody murder. Good times
I saw this one on theaters and it freaked me out a lot haha I'd suggest you check out Shutter (Thai version) and maybe Sinister. They are really good and interesting.
This movie made me afriad of direct eye contact for awhile because the way those things stared into you was worse than something wanting to eat or kill you its just un describable. Great movie! I dont watch this one or the ring often because they are pretty disturbing but i think thats the beauty of them. These movies accomplished so much without going to far with the gore. Thats very impressive imo.
This is one of my favorite horror movies. I just love the fact it's so different from other Hollywood movies. I also like how they get to show off some really good Japanese actors, who might not know much English.
While I have since conquered my fear, as a full grown 27 year old man, this was the first horror movie I ever saw. I was 11 or 12 and it absolutely scarred me for life. Whenever I felt any fear, was in the dark, going down a stairwell, walking through a long hallway, looking up into a closet, the dark corner of my room, you name it.. this was the thing I was scared of, this was the thing lurking. That noise haunted me for years afterwards lmao. I still rewatch this from time to time to assert dominance.
"The giant hairball curse" would be a great alternative title for this lmao. I remember scaring my cousin all the time with the grudge noise at sleepovers. 😭😂
I’m a huge, huge horror fan. Have been since I was really small, and I’m in my mid-twenties now. I saw the grudge when I was in sixth grade, and to this day, no horror movie affected me as deeply and as long as this one did. Something about the insidious curse, about how it never discriminated, and that god awful death rattle…like I said, I’m now in my mid twenties and I still can’t take hearing it without feeling deeply unnerved.
My girlfriend and I saw this in theaters, we were in our early twenties, and it scared the hell out of us. I'm not ashamed to day we slept with the lights on that night.
Interestingly, the messy state of the house is an indication that the curse has taken over. It's basically a red flag and it works so effectively in creating the creepy atmosphere because no one expects such a massive amount of garbage to build up in an entire house. Please check out The Grudge 2 and the Japanese versions of the films, as well as the newest ones Ju-On The Beginning of the End and Ju-On The Final Curse : )
Y'all should check out the grudge 2 aswell as shutter 2004 ( thai horror, not the remake ) first time I watched shutter I couldnt finish it as it was to tense. That movie is really something else.
This was the first horror movie I ever saw as a little kid. It freaked me out like nothing else, but I watched it SO many times. Critics may not have liked it, but I still love this movie.
Oh I remember always sleeping all bundled up in the middle of the bed when I have seen this back then, fearing to look over the edge and shit like that 😄😄 That choking sound of her still creeps me out.
The Grudge describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of extreme rage or sorrow. The curse is an entity created where the person died. Those who encounter this supernatural force die, and the curse is reborn repeatedly, passing from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror. So everyone that came in contact with the house or was related to a victim was now a target of the curse.
One of my friends watched this movie in theater and he told me that a lot of people left the theater because the movie scarred the shit out of them. 🤣 this movie is my all time favorite horror movie!
This movie is absolutely my first horror trauma, I've tried watching it now as an adult and I still can't handle it, it haunts me every time I'm alone 😭😭
Also, I reallt don't wanna watch this video, I'm terrified, but youtube keeps suggesting it to me and the poster scares me just as much, so I'm watching it in hope that youtube never suggests it to me again.
I'd like to suggest one of my fave Japanese horror movies for you to react to - Dark Water (2002). It follows a recently divorced mother and her 6 year old daughter. They move into an apartment and strange, creepy things start happening that are connected to the empty apartment above theirs. It's really worth watching.
This was the first horror movie I watched in full, I was in 4th grade and my siblings and I wanted to watch one of moms scary movies, 15 minutes into the movie and both of them have fallen asleep, I stayed awake for the whole movie, legit causing me to have a panic attack for the rest of the night and I didn't want to wake anyone up, so I put on 3 kids films till my mom woke up the next morning and I felt safe to sleep. Yeah, but now I love horror movies how ironic. lmao
23:20 random fact: in Japan they demolish buildings (mainly major cities like Tokyo) every 30-40 years when they made. Reason for it is as a country that goes through a lot of natural disasters they are always making new materials to better fend off against damage. Of course if you already live in it for long time they would ask you if it’s okay to relocate you and in return reimburse when they demolish the house or if for whatever reason if it has historical value you can get a form fo prevent it to be demolished. But if don’t agree to those they can’t do anything. They will ask again but can’t demolish it unless if one day the owners past away or move away the city immediately demolish it and build a new house with new material structure before put it up for sale. If look at current pictures or current Japanese media newer houses are more squarish since they design it where if one part gets damage from say earthquakes there is a company that comes with vehicles to remove that block out, put in a new block and connect it to the building to replace the damage instead of completely tear it down. Of course they inspect it to see if it’s worst then they thought on damage then they demolish the entire building and make a brand new one. If wondering “wait then wth doesn’t america do this for states that go through major floods, wildfires, quakes, tornadoes, etc?” Easy: not American. If not built by American company and materials or building looks American then no deal. There is a house in one of the southern states that perfectly fenced off the hurricane while it’s neighborhood was damaged. It’s more hut/dome shape and designed by a german(?) architect that study the area so the house can survive the hurricane if it comes by. It was pitch for new built houses to look like that hut house wifh materials not that pricey but was denied mainly ppl didn’t like the way it looked. So yeah looks and where it’s made/design by is more important then the safety of civilians living in it. Put that onto list of America’s infrastructure issues.
Ju-On. The original Japanese version scared the living daylights out of me years ago. I had no idea what to expect and randomly watched it. Love a great horror flick!
I know this video is old but Toshio and the cat Maru's souls fused together becasue they both were drowned in the bathtub. Also children who are killed in japanese culture are called "strays" because their spirit wanders like a stray animal
I saw this in theaters with my work friend. I got thoroughly freaked out by that "Grudge noise" and my friend knew it. Periodically, I would answer my work phone extension and I would hear that low gravelly "Ahhhhhhhhh..." Lol NEVER let your friends know your fears!
This movie scared me stupid. I'm going to listen to your review while I work, but I don't think I can watch it. Fun story, the building I work in has a tiny elevator that can only hold 2 or 3 people at a time and it's one of those old fashioned ones with the metal cage type door that closes, do you can see the whole elevator shaft as you ride it. Every floor has a window in the door so you can see in as you pass by it, just like that scene in this. I have thought of that scene literally every time I use that elevator and I used to be the last one to leave the building late most nights, after dark. Thanks to the rona I get to work from home full time now, thank god! I also still think of that shower scene more often than I want to admit when I'm in the shower, lol.
I have a weird thing with this movie. No matter how many times I see it, I NEVER remember it. I have no idea why. Another Japanese-esque film you may want to check out is Shutter (2008). It's a trippy movie that left a mark on me, much like The Ring did, all these years later.
My mom is terrified of this movie. One night we had a power outage from a thunderstorm and we lit up candles and decided to play Charades. We had a blanket separating the kitchen from the living room to keep the air conditioning in and I decided to use that to my advantage. When it was my turn, as soon as I started crawling out from under the blanket, twitching and lurching just like in the movie, my mom shouted out, "The Grudge!! The Grudge!! Okay, stop it now! Oh my god!" I'll never forget it 😊
She's still terrified to this day and I sometimes tease her with the throat clicking noise because I know how to mimic it. As soon as I start it she tells me to stop and threatens to hang up the phone, lol.

The Japanese version was the first of all the asian horror movis i watched it made me insanely scared but i watched it like one million times!! I never saw the American version this is my first time with you guys
After Mirrors and Final Destination 1 and 4 this was one of the first horror movies I've ever seen and also the first horror movie I thought 'wasn't so bad'. I think my friends were just constantly teasing me with the grudge-sound that I expected the worst and then it wasn't. Great reaction video!
After watching this when we were kids, my brother slept in his pillow case that night so she couldn't pull him in the bed, and I'm not really sure I slept much. My room door opened to a dark hallway so I was basically freaked. This damn movie.
Long story short if you enter the house you're cursed. The curse was caused by a husband finding out his wife had secret and obsessive feelings about another man, in the Japanese version it lead to him believing his son Toshio wasn't his, and he killed Kayako, Toshio and the cat who then came back to kill him creating a fun little nexus of hell in the house The American family that moved in were all cursed because they were all there at the showing of the house so bam that's them fucked, the investigator went to the house to avenge his comrades who went to investigate the house after kayako was murdered so he's also in trouble. It's like just looking at the house and you're done
One of the reasons why is this movie scares so effective, is because they put those scares in the daily encounter basis, you can't avoid shower, you can't avoid going to bed, you probably can't avoid taking an elevator. In the Japanese version there were some scenes not in the US remake which I think was super creepy and traumatized me for a very long time, there's a scene where the main character was having a casual coffee break with her friend at a cafe, and the girl felt something touches her leg, if was actually the black cat passing by, and when she decides to check what's under the table, she saw the boy sitting there looking at her in the eyes, that scene f me up so bad, makes me always feel uncomfortable putting my legs under table for a long time. And there's a scene the girl is sleeping, just like normal people, sometimes you wake up in the middle of the night, just when she open her eyes, she saw the boy standing right in front of her! and when she look up, she saw another face, the mother was standing at the head of the bed, bending down and staring at her! It's hard to describe those scene with words, but the Japanese one creepiness level is crazy high. Also, I think you guy actually should watch the remake in unrated version instead, it has more scenes that they deleted which is too heavy for a PG13 rating back then.
You guys need to watch The Grudge 2, it’s actually even darker and creepier than this one. I like it more because it feels more like an authentic Japanese horror film.
For more creep out horror, try The Orphanage, {2007}. It is English but a Spanish production. Classic if you haven't seen it, is Hellraiser, 1987. It is the introduction of the character Pinhead.
There's a movie that has the ring vrs the grudge. People move into the grudge house and watch the ring video. It's a crash of spiritual haunts fighting over the people in the house. Looks awesome!
The Ring and The Grudge were based off of the Japanese movie Ringu. Those two movies were remade for American audiences. So I would recommend Ringu if you really enjoyed these two movies.
I was a huge fan of this movie when it came out, I learned how to make the Grudge noise perfectly. I was also a very elaborate prankster. The combination led to me causing two of my friends to go into trauma at some point, I stopped pranking people since. And no, they still don't think it was a funny prank, it was way too scary.
There are four movies in this series now and you have to watch all four to get the full picture. They are all happening at close to the same time. This series is taken from a Japanese film series translated and reshot in English.
Watched this probably when I was 8-9 years old... it traumatized me lol Like I was so scared of that sound like you have no idea. I thought I would be ok watching it again but damn it terrified me again!
This is the only movie that genuinely terrified me when I was younger. The first time was with my 2 cousins and it kept us up all night with the lights on.
There's a series about the Grudge on Netflix?? (can't remember) called Ju-On: Origins. There it is explained what the curse is and how it works and it was actually good, definitely recommend that you guys should watch it.
I love watching these two react to horror movies. As a die-hard horror movie fan I like to see other's reactions. These type videos make me feel as though we're experiencing it together, even though I've practically seen them . I'm not a jumpy person nor do I get scared while watching them, but it is nice to find people who actually enjoy them. I don't have any friends or family who'll watch any with me, so reaction videos are kind of cool.
Oh wow this gives a weird nostalgia, or maybe more like weird flashback to my youth being obsessed with these films. The japanese ones are much more crazy.
1:05 no we have The main universe Ju-on the curse 1 and 2 Ju-on the grudge 1 and 2 Spin offs Ju-on black ghost Ju-on white ghost Reboots Ju-on beginning of the end Ju-on final curse crossover Sadako vs kayako 18:23 it said anyone who enters the curse please of origin will be cursed. And who ever came in contact with the person who is cursed will be cursed as well. Also destroying the house were the curse was created wont stop the curse. 27:38 his name is toshio. And theirs a reason why he meows basically his soul and his cat merged together because they were so close. 29:40 that's from ju-on the grudge 29:57 it's from ju-on the grudge most of the scenes from this movie were from ju-on the curse and ju-on the grudge. Making this remake very unoriginal
So so unsettling....this is only the 2nd time I've ever seen this one....I never wanted to watch it again after the first time. I'm not sure why it got me so bad, cuz I've seen TONS of horror movies. (My kids still tease me about this one) The creepy sounds....they're just sounds that shouldn't be. But when something is that insidious, it really bothers me...maybe cuz there's not much defense against it??? Anyhow, enjoyed your reactions.
I watched this movie when I was definitely too young to watch it and I hated the bed scene. The bed is supposed to be your safe space away from monsters and then that girl came crawling up. I was scared to look under the sheets for years.
This was a great reaction video, guys! Listen, I'm almost in my mid-20s and have had occasionally-recurring nightmares from this movie since 9yrs old (at least that's as far as I can recall), so it's safe to say the Grudge franchise traumatized me. I kid you not, NO other horror film has ever terrified me as much as this has and still does. That's why I say it is both my favourite and most hated horror. I hope you two were able to sleep okay after this!!!
