The GTX 470 is still great at heating your room, and playing some games

Today we're taking a look back at the Fermi GTX 470. As one of the first DX11 graphics cards, this old beast helped change the world of PC gaming and for that I have nothing but respect for it.
Over a decade later and you might find it's gaming performance quite surprising, especially for the price, though if you aren't satisfied with how it handles AAA titles you might be pleased with its room heating capabilities.

Great video, I bought a new in box Asus GTX 470 in 2017 ($90 CAD) from Amazon Canada. Used it for about a year, as my only graphics card. Then I got a RX 580 4GB and used that for a coupe of years. My grandson wanted to start a RU-vid channel, so my son and I grabed some old parts we had laying around build him a computer to run his channel from. Yep the Asus GTX 470 was in there for about a year and then my son exchanged cards with him and now my son uses it on their home computer and my grandson has a GTX 970 in his computer. It's nice to see it's still useable...

its the difference of what to do with enough money for a console in 2022 vs 2010. if you had 300 bucks in 2010, a PS3 was literally the most power you could get for that buck, and both that or an Xbox 360 would be better options for a gamer. that same amount of money now, especially after the crash of the crypto market early this year, could be used to build a PC at the same or better spec than a PS4 Pro or Xbox One's equal revision

I bought a pair of these at launch (EVGA models) and paired them with my QX6700 that ran at 3Ghz. Due the motherboard layout, I had to sandwich my X-fi sound card between the two GTX 470's. Needless to say, within a year, the prodigious heat from the 470's roasted the sound card and it failed. About 3 months after than the top card also failed, likely due to excessive heat. I RMA'd the failed card, and EVGA sent me a GTX 570 as a replacement, which meant that SLI wasn't possible. So I called them back and they said that they didn't have any replacement GTX 470's , but said that if I sent them the working 470, they'd send me another 570. Which sounded good to me. So I sent them the remaining 470 and sure enough, they send me a new 570 and I was back in the SLI business. The GTX 570's seemed to run a bit cooler, I never had any trouble with them, they were just short on VRAM.

@@HeyItsJonny Not sure if I've tried that one or not but I have played a bit of gzdoom ultimately the last builds I tried a little over a year ago I preferred Zandronum though. Kind of got tired of modding so I just strip it down and usually play PSX Brutal doom 13.3 or 13.1 can't remember offhand on my main rig and on this rig I just setup all out pc doom with brutal modern 20 although I may go with a older version of brutal mostly because too burnt out to un mod this version of brutal, the custom sound effects are too loud as usual and it takes a day usually to get it all toned down. I think I prefer 19 overall but I love the pistol idea in newer brutals it would be worth the time to make sort of a balance between brutal and vanilla doom.

@@Bawkr right on, whatever works for you. Zdl is just a gzdoom mod manager, basically it loads all of your mods with a selected source port and allows you to set a load order. It's like vortex for skyrim.
@Bawkr

@@HeyItsJonny ah I just lay it all out in the .ini by pasting the file dir in my load order. Sometimes I'll make a separate entire instance something like a Wolfenstein mod. But yea lately I just play a few levels of psx brutal. If I need to swap setups I can simply have BAK1233 etc. of the ini file or even name them something like Strife, Wolfenstein, Brutal19, etc.

Ran a EVGA GTX 480 1.5GB from 2010 to 2014 I just remember it running really hot under load (90-91C) but it was stable at least, the single blower style cooling used back then just wasn't very good especially on higher end gpu's.

I'm not sure about later "blower" style cars, but the 200 and 400 series had some really complex coolers. You needs to take a LOT of screws off especially if there is a backplate on these cards and it's a tricky process. It's typically very easy these days, though EVGA does throw a "hidden" nut in their high end cards to make it more difficult to take apart.

It's a great card for sure to warm these cold winter nights. I didn't expect Stray to run as it did, even on low 720p or GTA V at 1080p. Seems there's still some life left on the 470.

If anything it is the vram holding these older cards back despite the lack of driver support but that is news to none these days though it is interesting to find versions of these cards with double the vram or more in rare instances often as Quadro cards. I do have one Fermi card with 4gb vram though it is cut down in other respects.

Got one for free a year and a half ago in some recycling center (i live in spain), te catch is that it was the board only, no heatsink, so i spend 20€ and 6 months looking for a compatible aftermarket cooler (or a dead card with a compatible cooler), i ended up with a zalman aftermarket cooler, and when i launched the first game (Nier Automata with a mix of mid's lows and high settings at 900p) it honestly surprised me how well it ran the game, the same for the rest of games i tried with it, dropping from 1080p to 900p or 720p it's a good tradeoff to gain some extra frames, unless you wanna run newer games i these 400/500 series gpu's are still quite worthy.

It reminds me of the time when i had my GTX580 reference design which hitted 102°c easily. Have you been trying to delid those gpus? Once done it gets only easier. But the thing is, a Aftermarket cooler ist needed because of the height changes, those cooler we're designed for GPU DIEs with an Heatspreder. Could help some GPUs of these generations with heating problems.
