The Guardian: Friedkin's Forgotten Horror Adaptation

William Fredkin was a master filmmaker, and although most of his stone-cold classics happened before 1990, he proved he still had plenty in the tank with things like The Hunted and Bug, to name a few. He was a replacement director, which seems surreal considering his talents, and he was one of 3 credited writers on a little-remembered horror movie adaptation from 1990. The Guardian is based on The Nanny, not that one from 1987, and it’s a strange pairing of source material and finished product. Both pieces of media are mostly slept on in their respective fields, but how close did Fredkin and the other writers come to match the book? Always do a background check on your employees as we find out what happened to this adaptation.

I was 11yrs old when I saw this film as a double feature at the vine theater. What I remember the most is when the first person who dies is a black woman. And at the moment when that scene happened. I guy in back of theater yells out, “A MAN, WHY DO THEY HAVE TO KILL THE BLACK PEOPLE FIRST” the crowd laughed out load because it was a true thing in movies.

This movie was crazy for the time it was released. I always wondered why it wasn't as big as the evil dead. I mean there should have been more lore around the tree...

It may not be memorable but it’s one hell of a fun, bat shit crazy, off the rails movi in Friedkin’s filmography. I’d be willing to go so far to say I get more enjoyment from it than I do from his higher brow movies like The Exorcist or The French Connection simply just for how insane it is. And we love Bark Puss!

Don't know why but i picture this getting a modern remake especially if long both Camilla and the Tree are both makeup and practical effect & less cgi

I saw The Guardian in the theater and really liked it at the time. Though it's lost only some of its luster, I can still enjoy it every few years. Overall, I think it's a good movie that doesn't really have much downtime. The baby sacrifices becoming what appear to be carvings in the tree is still very cool. And a correction, she does not shape shift into a wolf, the pack of wolves are her protectors, as they appear more than once in the movie. While maybe not an immortal classic, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the film to warrant either the negativity or it being overlooked.

Thanks for making this video. I watched it as a kid and never remembered the name of the movie. The scene when the nanny is shown as the monster was spooky.

i'll always remember this movie because i was enamored by Jenny Seagrove's beauty at the time. i had already watched her miniseries A Woman of Substance and its sequel Hold the Dream, and was shocked to see her playing an evil character in The Guardian. important to note, i was still a child then. not at an appropriate age to watch those miniseries because of the sexual content. but my aunts were into those drama and would block my view during the on-screen romance. later on i found The Guardian through a friend of the family. little did i know that it was a horror flick filled with gore and sex 😅

I haven't read the book (knew of it), doubt I ever will but my mom and I love the movie! Tbh, some details of the book mentioned here doesn't appeal to me... Honestly, I'm not sure what people wanted from this movie?! I found it perfectly enjoyable, although some scenes and character choices are goofy but still a straight forward watch in the vein of a dark fairy-tale. But everybody different. 🖤

Saw this when it came out on video and go back to it every now and then. It isn't great but has enough that I give it a pass. * I am a bigger fan of The Guardian than I am of Darkman... Maybe I need to watch it again.
