I started training around 1985-86 right in the middle of the fitness craze (Stallone, Arnold, Olivia Newton-John, Jamie Lee Curtis...). The 70s were therefore still very close to us in terms of influence, machines and atmosphere. The gym clothing fashion was completely crazy! Each era has its strong points and its weak points. It wasn't perfect in those days either. But I wouldn't trade the 70s and 80s for all the gold in the world. There's nothing like the 80s!

Bodybuilding really started to explode into the public consciousness in the 70’s, continued to grow in the 80’s, and then finally peaked in the 90’s. The fitness industry as a whole has expanded world wide and is much more mainstream now than it has ever been, but the golden era of pro bodybuilding came and went and ultimately ended over 20 years ago. You don’t see todays top bodybuilders all work out together at Golds Gym, or enjoy a workout in the blazing sun amongst hundreds of onlookers at muscle beach. Those days are gone for good.

Honestly the only reason I go to planet fitness is because it's all that's open at 2am, and with their 20 dollar black card, I can figure out which of their 5 gyms in driving distance are totally empty or have 1 other person at that hour, and I'll take that over some "instabro" gym that's only open hours where I have to deal with Captain Broccoli 20 minutes on a machine because he's texting and tagging his reel photos.

In the gym yesterday all the kids, mostly skinny, were on their phones for ages between sets. The older guys, hench and bigger and where I assume the kids want to be, weren't on their phones and were just lifting and talking but maintaining the intensity. Those kids just needed to look up and see how you get results, instead of checking ticktock or whatever.

Yep everyone at the gym is on their phones. I do set after set machine after machine untill I'm tired then use phone on the massage chair.

If I went to a gym back then, I wouldn't have played on my phone like I do today, which usually takes up half of my workout time. 😂

Crazy to see how much quality muscle was around then… the amount of people walking around shredded looked insane Now everything is diluted with people vlogging, taking pictures, food isn’t quite the same What a great time to be alive 😎

I was fortunate enough to catch the end of the 80's early 90's workout scene. I was young probably around 14 when I started training at the Dayton, Ohio area Gold's Gym that was next to a toy store called Children's Palace. I'll never forget that vibe, and seeing all these jacked up dudes training all the time was very motivating for a fat kid that wanted to look better and get girls. just free weights and old school equipment with WTUE blaring the rocks hits at the time over the speakers. the muscle mags, the early years of supplementation and crazy programs that could get you JACKED in 12 weeks. those crazy striped baggy pants(forget what they were called), Gold's Gym t-shirts, Hot Stuff, Ultimate Orange, Weider Weight Gainer, all of it was so cool. eventually that Gold's I spoke about moved to another location but was never the same. thanks for the vid, it was a golden time indeed. but honestly, we are living in a pretty good era despite all the things that are "new" and annoying. training is what you make it. don't like your gym? change gyms
