The Half-Price Photoshop Killer: A Review of Affinity Photo

Hello everybody and welcome to Bull Technology. For the past many years, I have used Adobe Photoshop CS3 as my main photo editor. Yes, that’s right, I have been using a 15 year old piece of software to edit all of my thumbnails, channel art, and video graphics.
But in 2018, with the release of macOS Mojave, Apple stopped supporting 32 bit applications. This meant that I would no longer be able to use my ancient version of Photoshop. And ever since then I’ve kept an old Mac around just to use Photoshop.
So this past month, I decided to give a new piece of software a chance. I decided to use Affinity Photo. And today I’ll be giving it a review. In the interest of full disclosure Sarif software isn't sponsoring this video, and all of the opinions you're about to hear are entirely my own. So let’s get started.-

I jumped off the Adobe ship a long time ago. My last version of Photoshop that I used was CS2 and it did everything that I needed. I had plans to upgrade, but once Adobe went to subscription only, that was it. I got Affinity Photo about 6 months ago and I have no regrets. It does a lot things PS can and some things it can do better. Plus the learning material is plentiful on RU-vid.

Couldn't agree more. I think Adobe has turned a lot of people away from their software by switching to a subscription model.

I've been a Affinity Photo User since Aug., 2020, it's so nice to make a one time purchase and not have to deal with monthly fees, Adobe has become so bloated with features the average user will never use. One of the great things about Serif, they are very quick to respond to any questions, always helpful and polite. If anyone has thought about switching to AP, stop thinking, run, don't walk, make the change, you'll not be sorry. Good review, simple and to the point. As far as physical media, this is the response to piracy that cost companies billions of dollars a year. Affinity used to have a 90 day trial, that was great to have, even 10 days will give you ample time to decide.

I couldn't agree more that Photoshop has become so bloated. It's as if they keep adding features to justify the price. I feel like for my needs, Affinity Photo is kind of the Goldilocks product. He delivers everything I need and just slightly more than what I need. I also-after about a month since this video has gone out-couldn't recommend this product enough. As far as the physical media goes, yes piracy has been a huge driving factor. Personally, I don't find $50 an outrageous price for a digital only product, and given that I can install it on many devices it's really a non-issue and more of a personal preference.

I share your opinion of Adobe and am happily using affinity photo now. Plus, there are really great tutorials all over RU-vid and for this and their other software as well! Once you get used to it in her face is really very easy to use it’s a little different than I do mean ultimately I find it less intimidating.

Hey thanks for sharing. Yeah I also find Affinity to be much less intimidating and it really is a great PS alternative.

🖐I refused to pay for a subscription for standalone software on my computer a long time ago. I think that it is a completely wrong transfer of the subscription model. Now I only use software without a subscription, with the exception of antivirus and another inexpensive program. For graphics and publications I work with Affinity Suite. To work with photos I use DxO Photolab, C1, TopazLab. And for video work, I use the best product on the market, Davinci Resolve Studio. For audio, I use Reaper and Audacity. I'm very happy that I no longer have to sponsor a bunch of unnecessary features and Adobe policies. Thank you for the video!

I've also moved onto Affinity. Adobe Photo shop has been a growing pain for me for years. The whole Subscription thing is what killed it for me.

I dabbled with Gimp before my switch to Affinity Photo. Yes, it's flawed- but it's incredible given that it's free. All said though, I find that Affinity Photo is a nice upgrade from Gimp.

Hey just a tip for you that I think you'll enjoy - try the stock tab (right of the layers) rather than going out of the app to google!

so my question is for this, does this program come on physical media? because i have used photoshop since i was a kid at photoshop 7... in my mind if i don't have a CD in my hands for the program i don't OWN it.... i am merely "renting" it and i HATE digital only programs my choices for software to switch right now are either corel draw and affinity CORELdraw still offers the latest version of its programs on CDs and 10 years ago i scoffed at even ENTERTAINING the thought using a corel product because adobe was the best... but now that adobe has revealed its TRUE colors.... and is intent on ripping us off.... i changed my mind
@bull_technology
@bull_technology 2 года назад
I couldn't agree more with you about physical media-it's my preference by far and away. Just as a sidenote, I purchased all of my Nintendo switch games on physical media because I wanted a sense of ownership over the games I was purchasing. Sadly I am not aware of a physical copy of Afinity Photo. When I purchased my copy of affinity photo I was purchasing a digital product key. It's not ideal and I too miss the days of being able to buy CS3 on a disk-but I think those days are gone.

@@bull_technology to be quite honest that begs the question then. why is it that home media such as TV shows movies etc and music CDs not really dying down (and in the case of LPs and cassettes increasing and coming back) and yet... computer programs are the ONLY things that seem to have this issue of *dying out* in terms of physcial media it makes ZERO sense to me and stinks of double standard
@bull_technology
@bull_technology 2 года назад
Well... CDs and LPs "coming back" is really more of an enthusiast thing. Yes, they are picking up popularity compared to where they were 10 years ago, but they'll never have the popularity they once had. For most people I think it's more for the nostalgia-and as a collector it is strange to see new LPs. Of course you can still buy computer programs physically, but usually you're just buying the plastic-i.e. in the box it'll just contain a digital code (I had this experience with The Sims 4 not too long ago). Overall media is moving toward digital. I don't like it, but that's where the market is headed. It's all push to make publishers more money and it's sad. It's possible that in the future we may see releases of computer software in physical copies, but I think again these will be targeted for enthusiasts and people looking for nostalgia. For example I could see re-releases of RCT and SimCity in the future just as I see Billy Joel LPs being re-released today decades after his initial publishing.

Can you speak to the speed for using Affinity? I’ve been using Paintshop Pro and it is a drag on my gaming computer even.

I would want to buy Affinity Photo but Mac and PC separating licenses make me temporarily refrain from doing so. Honestly, if I have to purchase the same license twice, it is not really significantly better than a subscription for the said piece of software.

To each their own, as a full time Mac user this isn't an issue this isn't a big deal to me, but I can see how this would be an issue for some.

It's still cheaper in the long run. I've had to buy multiple times for different platforms with various things. Not all that uncommon, and it is what it is. I'd much rather that than a subscription.
