Here's my version of the new song from Hunger Games - "The Hanging Tree" Originally by Jennifer Lawrence, but this time performed by 119 tracks of JUST the human voice! What do you think?
"I told you to run so we'd both be free" never fails to give me shivers. It makes me think of a spouse's love that "if you live, then so do I. But if you die, then my heart dies with you."
I know this is very old now, but all of the lyrics are explained in the book Ballard of songbirds and snakes. But no spoilers from me, so I just recommend you read the book
Doge wizard I see it the same way, depending on the ambient of it. With the group, it does. With a solitary singer, it sounds more so an invitation to die alongside a loved one
I can go either way with it. To call a hangman’s noose a ‘necklace of hope’ is deeply unsettling. It paints a picture that the world the singer is living in is so bleak and painful that death via hanging is the best way to escape from it. It would be better to die with your love than suffer in this life. Maybe that’s just me looking too much into it. I dunno.
The original is "rope", in both the movie and the book they change it to "hope" so it would fit the rebellion. The necklace of hope also gives connotations of "We will be free or we will die trying" or even the American revolutionary saying "Give me liberty or give me death."
After hearing this yet again... I realized, I rather wish Peter had gone with the book-original song of "necklace of rope". Hope is stronger, but rope gives it much more of the proper, eerie quality.
True, but calling a hangman’s noose a ‘necklace of hope’ is a sickening concept. Imagine living in a world full of pain and agony and being so helpless that you can’t change it that a noose gives you hope. Dying is the only alternative, as there’s nothing else left.
The book and the movie both use 'necklace of hope' in the version that is aired by District 13 because Plutarch thinks it will be more inspiring to the rebels.
Are you are you Coming to the tree They strung up a man They say who murdered three Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree Are you are you Coming to the tree Where dead man called out For his love to flee Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree Are you are you Coming to the tree Where I told you to run So we'd both be free Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree Are you are you Coming to the tree Wear a necklace of hope Side by side with me Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree Are you are you Coming to the tree Where I told you to run So we'd both be free Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree Are you are you Coming to the tree They strung up a man They say who murdered three Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree Are you are you Coming to the tree Where dead man called out For his love to flee Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree
My favorite thing about this cover is how it starts out quietly, and gradually gets more and more insistent - partly through thicker background vocals and getting louder, until the chorus enters. Gives me chills every time.
Hi Evynne Hollens: May I have permission to use this song for animation purposes? Specifically, for a message to everyone who lost their love ones to the pandemic, or any situation in that matter. Just to let everyone know that we may have lost them that day, and it will require patience, but we will find them again as long as we can see only the greatest of memories that bonded all of us together. 😌
I was wondering the entire time if he would say necklace of rope or hope. In the book it's rope and it says things about when they were young of Prom and Katniss making necklaces of rope. It was later changed in the movies to wear a necklace of hope, but both versions make sense.
if you watch movie carefully you can find a moment when Plutarch says that he changed original "rope" for "hope", so that sounds more suitable for propo
I actually just realized how Genius it is to do the instruments with your voice. Not only does it add something unique and interesting, but you can make any song without instruments. That's such a great idea.
It also adds a different feel to the song. In-universe, this is a song written by people without access to real instruments, and with possessions tightly controlled enough that they can’t make improvised ones. All they have is their voices to make music with.
This song hits so much different after reading "A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". Seeing the event that inspired the song and meeting the author of the song, so much more impact, and that is saying something.
The thing that makes me cry every time I watch this is that I start imagine the different voices as all of the people who've died The higher pitched female voices as Rue and Prim, the lower female voices as Katniss and Clove, the deep male voice as Thresh. I can't listen to it without crying now.
the only reason this is so haunting is because it was written and performed in a minor key. if they wrote this in a major key, it would sound much different and much less eerie. that's one of the many reasons that I love this song. this version of it especially makes it eerie and creepy and IT'S SO COOL!
+Ason Rutledge no they think I stole The comment about Peeta Hollens but I really dodnt I have been a fan of Peter for a while but only recently found out about this song through snapchat once when me and my friend were talking about the hunger games and it was the first thing that hit me I even text it to my friend I was all like "Hey he's Peeta Hollens now not Peter"
@@Birrbb well, really it's just the backstory more than anything. I guess I could've said the backstory instead of meaning. A man was going to be hanged because he was accused of trying to shut down the mines, and killing three men in the process. His wife ran up to him, trying to save him. The man, Arlo, tried to stop her, telling her to run, and then was hung.
There is a reason I keep saying that Peter Hollens is probably the single best acappella artist out there. He enables me to enjoy songs I may not have heard or enjoyed before. The background in the early part of this is incredible! I had to really listen to realize that it wasn't instrumentation, even though I know Peter doesn't use them. To you, Peter! Another amazing job! #SongRequest - Trouble in River City - The Music Man
Oh, I forgot the Music Man! Darn it! But I agree, he should do that, as well as... Narnia Medley w/ Lindsey Newsies Medley Dick van Dyke Tribute Super Mario Bros Blue Skies Marvel Medley I Am The Doctor (from Doctor Who) And It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing. Power to People Named Martin
He did it in a collab cover for another song called Carry On. It's a beautiful video and im quite addicted to hearing it! That and his Phantom of the Opera :)
I've been putting his playlist on repeat for the past few weeks. He really has a very pretty voice. He looks like Lee Pace, the guy who acted and Trandruil in The Hobbit and LOTS which is really cool cos he seems to like that saga a lot.
Thanks for making this song what it should actually sound like! I find it slightly disturbing that Hanging Tree has turned into some sort of techo/rave track that's currently a hit on the radio. I mean... it's literally a song about a guy asking if his love will come hang herself next to him. It was meaningful in the books, but why is this a thing? So, great job with this version Peter!
Honestly, I know some people prefer “Necklace of Hope” But honestly, as the meaning is a man who was hung wanting his lover to run away with him, then hang next to him, it makes more sense and gives it the haunting melody.
+Dion Furqon OMG yes 😢😢. Hellfire has haunted me since the 90s. Although The Bells of Notre Dame would probably slay me just as beautifully just for the closing note alone.
I have neither read the book nor watched the movie so I have no idea what the story line or plot is. But this music is so compelling, so haunting, so powerful it is something I cannot nor will not forget. As Meeseeks aptly notes, it is the minor key in which this is sung that gives the song its power and depth. Thanks, Peter, for making us, as Tolkien wrote, "glad that through you great beauty has been wakened inn song."
Simply put, the context of the scene is Katniss recalling a song from her childhood to rally the resistance together. In the movie, they added a scene where an army of rebels from District 5 sing as they march on the hydroelectric dam that gives the Capitol its power, pushing bombs into the entrances as hundreds of them are gunned down. They took a scene that was just a normal part of the book, and made it into the single best part of the entire series.
@Shifsabre You're forgetting about the prequel, too. When Lucy Gray Baird sings the song, it references about the actual hanging spot that the Peacekeepers do. This was also a secret message to say to Billy Taupe, Lucy Gray's former lover, to meet up somewhere not many people often go due to negative connections to the place. When Lucy Gray does fall in love when Coriolanus Snow, she sings the song to him to meet up there without raising suspicions so they could escape together with no-one knowing.
@@NiennaFan1 I compared this piece to "The Music of the Ainur" because although it starts out with a single voice, it is transformed into a choral performance. In Tolkien's story, it is a chorus of the Ainur which creates the World.
I don't know if anyone remembers this movie, but Dreamwork's: The Prince of Egypt was my all time favorite movie growing up. The musical score is beautiful! I wonder if Peter wouldn't mind looking in to some of the songs? For instance, "The Plagues", "All I Ever Wanted", or "Deliver Us". I think your voice would be perfect for any of the songs, Peter. Please look in to them? :)
i had this song stuck in my head before seeing this, and my dad and sisters said the peter hollins version was awesome. so i checked it out. MIND. BLOWN!!!
The wonderful thing is that, everytime I listen to one of your songs, I completely stop thinking and can't remember what I wanted to do a sec before. Awesome job !
I love the haunting sad element to this song. I was too young understand the lyrics when it first came but man, when you hear the lyrics it adds a whole level of meaning to the song. The harmonies add to the etherealness, wow! 💯😢💜
***** It's good - chasing this music thing, because I can't help but do it :) I hope things are good with you! Would love to collab and bring you in on a project with EricThayneMusic we've got a couple ideas cooking.
@@BalticIOW in the movie it was 'necklace of rope" originally but was changed to "necklace of hope" before being used in a propaganda video to rally the districts together to fight for the rebellion
*****, you asked for requests so here it is. It would be cool if you were to do Eye of the Tiger. It would also be AWEOSME if you were to do more non-lyric music. If you did some alpaca classical music or some bits from OST's. If you were to do something like, Beethoven's Moonlight Santana, with just voice. Or if you were to play like some How to Train your Dragon theme, with just your voice. Some of the songs from Tangled would be nice as well. Now, this is a long comment, but I want to say one more thing. You are an amazing person and you have inspired me to start choir again. I hope maybe meet you at some point. :) With no further ado, Your Teenaged Fan From Washington.
Oh my god this sounds angelic! The harmonies are just so absolutely perfectly in tune and everything, you can hear each individual part so well gah and the part after 2:20 is so well done WOW. You've really outdone yourself Peter!!!
I just found this version. I love it. I always loved this song from the book and was excited when they movie used it and made it a real track. The small line change of wear a necklace of hope from wear a necklace of rope was fit the movie well. There was more of a background story on this song and how Katniss' father taught it to her as a kid in the book so rope worked better than hope in the novel. But since that was taken out of the film the line change worked. And It made the song even more beautiful and haunting. Anyways great cover.
Sweet mother of god, how does this guy not have more views/subscribers? This is amazing. How does he keep picking all my favorite songs from movies... First the LotR ones, now this? He's going down my "movie songs" playlist and nailing them. Some songs just work better acapella. This is one of them. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Liked, faved, and shared.
what overrated shows, you can be talented but if you don't meet their criteria then you suck. Look at what AGT said about Lindsey Stirling, yet look at her now.
Not a forced, just that to be the free the only option is death in the point of view of the singer. So he's trying to get his lover to come with and be free with him.
When I first heard the original, I was a little underwhelmed. The techno remix thing that's on the radio makes me twitch. This... This I have chills. The progression felt so natural. The tone, emotion, felt like I had interpreted it in the books. I feel haunted. Stunned. Just when I thought I was accustomed to you and your acquaintances' talent.
The hanging tree - lyrics Are you, are you Coming to the tree? Wear a necklace of rope Side by side with me Strange things did happen here No stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree If we met at midnight In the hanging tree..
I lisen to this when i feel sad. Sometimes when i sleep. My mother told me about this. And im happy she did. Thank you for making this. It's Beutiful how you sung it.
Hello Peter, I wanted to listen to something new, so I came here, because I liked your collaborations with Lindsey and I was not disappointed! =D Your work is amazing! I enjoyed this one and Misty Mountains in particular. Those two song gave me immediate idea what to suggest for next cover: 'Hoist The Colours' from Pirates of The Caribbean: At The World's End Thank you very much for your incredible songs and I am looking forward to listening next one. May your passion for music never burn out! Kind regards
***** , are you going to the tree? Wouldn't be stranger then meeting there at midnight in the hanging tree. You did fantastic Mr Hollens, loved every bit! I started humming it at my High school and got people to start singing it with me! Love your music
