The Head-Spinning Reason Conservatives Are Upset About This Ad

"An ad campaign for a product that stops snoring and claims to keep couples together is causing a stir. The campaign features a U.S. solider and a Muslim woman, ostensibly as an unlikely couple kept together by the anti-snoring product. On Monday, the panel guests on Fox News Channel's The Kelly File debated over whether the advertisement was even controversial.
The ad features a real American soldier and his Muslim wife touting the benefits of this product. The ad was first rejected, but it has recently been approved and the couple is appearing in ads nationwide.
A spokesman for the pharmaceutical company behind the ads told Fox News Channel that the controversial campaign elicits an emotional reaction which drives interest in the product. "* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

I know this is super old, but honestly, if you're triggered by a person dressing in religious garb, you need more therapy than you're getting. That's absurdly severe.

@UnhappyMealXD

+Kaija Schmauss It really is. Some people would call that insensitive, but I'd call it speaking the truth. If you have any kind of PTSD from anything - war, sexual assault, etc. - and just seeing a Muslim person or a man or whatever it may be that contributed to your condition, you need a lot more help than you're getting.
@KaijaSchmauss
@KaijaSchmauss 8 лет назад
Bethany Dalton Right. Explosions are one thing. You still need therapy in that situation, but that's a case where avoiding fireworks or violent video games isn't unreasonable. Hijabs, however, are a different story. Muslim people are still people, and should not have to hide the symbols of their faith anymore than a Christian wearing a cross should.
@UnhappyMealXD
@UnhappyMealXD 8 лет назад
***** Exactly. It's totally understandable if someone has flashbacks when they hear fireworks or something along those lines, bringing them back to the violence. They still need more therapy if that does bother them because they should be able to go and enjoy the Fourth of July without suffering like that, but sometimes that's something they just have to learn to deal with and therapy helps them do that. But yes, if you're so affected by PTSD that so much as seeing a woman wearing a hijab will cause you so much emotional pain, you actually might need to get some in-patient therapy and slowly integrate yourself back into society because you obviously have a very serious case and you need help. And that last line in your comment about how Muslims should be able to wear symbols of their faith just like Christians do is spot on. You're exactly right. They're still people, and if they're in America, whether they're birthright citizens or not, they have the right to wear whatever they want that symbolizes their faith. Christians can wear crosses and t-shirts that symbolize their faith, and Muslims in America have that exact same right. People need to realize that America was built on that idea - the idea that everyone should be able to practice their religion freely (as long as they're not harming anyone). They need to stop trying to change that. They also need to stay out of people's relationships because it's not any of their business. If the couple is happy together and it's a safe relationship for both of them, that's all that matters. If religion isn't an issue for them, it shouldn't be an issue for anyone else.
@Knlght0fZero
@Knlght0fZero 8 лет назад
+Kaija Schmauss So these news and your comment are pretty old but i feel like i should say something, lets start with this, i agree that you shouldnt be afraid of muslims just cuz they are muslims, imagine people doing that to christians. But if a Veterans PTSD is so hardcore that he gets set off by fireworks or videogames, then its no stretch to believe that a muslim would trigger his ptsd as well, just saying...

Charlie Burnap They volunteer because they have to. Throughout our history our wars have been picked by the upper class to be fought by the lower and middle class. That's especially true now. Wars will only be "inevitable" when the young relatives of politicians who support the war are given combat duty until the war is over. I've always asserted that had George W. Bush actually seen combat he wouldn't have been so quick to invade Iraq. He actually believed there would be no casualties and ended up killing nearly 5,000 Americans and an estimated 100,000 Iraqis. Liberation my ass!

This video is a reminder of why Cenk is one of the most important voices in America. People really should become TYT Members to support this show. I never joined, but I am going to after listening to this video. The Republicans and conservatives, the hatemongering right wing, is getting stronger and more brazen with each passing day, and you can hardly find anyone standing up to them. I really hate TYT's Obama hatred and Obama bashing. Obama's not perfect, but this video should be a stark demonstration that Democrats are light years better than Republicans. Democrats are deeply compromised and frustratingly imperfect, but the GOP is just an out of control neo-fascist hate machine. And they are right on the brink of taking control of the entire federal government. There is no Democrat I have ever voted for that hasn't disappointed me, but I have never regretted any of those votes because the alternative was always much, much worse. If Obama had lost to Romney or McCain, we would still be in Iraq, entitlements like Social Security and Medicare would have been repealed, the federal government would be blocking gay rights and marijuana legalization, we would be at war with Syria, there would be no hope of finding a diplomatic settlement with Iran, and much more. Cenk needs our support -- our financial support. And so do the Democrats.

Fenixilius Strife People that lie about fiscal responsibility. True story. They run up the debt as fast as anyone else, while lying to your face. There's this war that got started in Iraq that ran up the debt. A brain child of a brainless president. Then the republicans voted against a veterans' jobs bill, but gave billions to Halliburton. Cool story bro. Fiscal responsibility? Reagan and debt-economics. People that fear change or progress. People that refuse to adapt and change in an ever expanding, globalised world. People that refuse to accept science, and favor the delusions of religion. Yeah, I'm all set.

Several Marines showed up in full parade dress, hope I used the correct term, with their wives. I could not believe the reactions from some of the shoppers, most everyone stopped in their tracks to applaud, a few saluted and then there was the dropped jaws and snickering from some shoppers when they realized that *gasp*, one of the Marines had a Muslim, assumed because of the headdress, woman on his arm. AND holy crap, he was carrying a toddler!! @stephaniejones3285
@stephaniejones3285 10 лет назад
The problem is, why is it so controversial?
@gspendlove
@gspendlove 10 лет назад
Stephanie Jones Because of the current prejudices of some people. Imagine if (and I apologize if this seems like a Godwin, but believe me, I'm not trying to discredit your position -- whatever your position happens to be --or engage in misdirection) an ad in 1930s Germany featured a nice Aryan soldier married to an obviously Jewish girl. If anyone had ever put an ad out like that, in that place and that time, he would have been advised to put his affairs in order first, 'cause he'd be headed for camp. And not the summer kind. Upon thinking about it, there may be a motive other than increased sales for this company (and this ad agency) to have created this advertisement the way it is. Whatever their motive, though, I still say they knew for sure that it would be controversial. As sure as I am that if you confronted Roger Ailes about his network's intolerance, he'd get all wide-eyed and say "We don't have a problem with a white American boy married to a Muslim girl! We're just reporting on the controversy! We're not bigoted here at Fox!" Sure. And if anyone believes that, I've got some beachfront property in Nebraska I'd like to sell them. I do not for one second agree with the bigotry and ignorance on display at Fox News, but that bigotry and ignorance does exist in the narrow minds of some people, even if they never watch that network. Fox News didn't invent that attitude.

That's the statement from a soldier I was waiting to hear. I always try to empathize with, and imagine the daily struggle of an american soldier sent in the middle east (no I'm not from the US), and it's hard to have a clear view of american soldiers, when they are constantly used by conservative -(american)-assholes to justify biggotry and ignorance. I have listened to similar stories. Yours deeply touched me, as it is not unique, but similar to others,that I've heard/read before. I'm may not give a satisfying response, but even though sometimes your wars are declared & guided by american interest, YOU sir, have thought for what you believe in. You may not be proud of what has happened, but you must know that people like me, like us, look up at soldiers like you and admire them. Stay strong , and please, be at peace with yourself. Find faith in humanity, like we find it in your story.
@Gabryal77
@Gabryal77 10 лет назад
Sidney Law Thank you I'm short on faith these days, every day is a struggle, because I do have PTSD, and the FOX news people do not know what it's like for a soldier who fights every day to retain our inner selves that were ripped apart by the things we've seen and the things we've done. I can't explain it better than that, just that it's a struggle to remember who we were before, and to be in some small way that person again. It's a wound that will haunt us the rest of our lives, and these hate-filled people, posing as journalists on FOX news treat it as if Muslims are to blame that I was injured. They are playing politics with wounded veterans, and should be publicly and loudly condemned for doing so. I wish I had faith in my citizenry to organize themselves enough to cause true misery, through protest and public condemnation, to the hatemongers on FOX news, for using *your* soldiers wounds and pain to further *their* agenda. Not only that it's an agenda that is full of hate against all people of a religion. ( Dear American Citizens, we are *your* soldiers, and *your* army. Not a political entity, not a political party, and not an arm of the government. We. Serve. You. So we will answer *your* call, all you have to do is make your voice heard. ) Now I'm an Atheist, and don't put any stock in their religion, but I know this much for a fact. I've had more Muslim's prayers said for me than Christian ones in my life. I made friends with many of the Muslim leaders in the area where I was stationed ( It was part of my job to be a liaison between Afghani Nationalists and Coalition troops, so I met more than a few ) and while I never will be a religious person, the prayers of relatively poor people in a nation far different from the one I was raised in remain to this day the most heartfelt I've ever known. If there was a God, it would be their simple prayers for my safety that I feel would have been heard. Anyway, I rarely respond to the responses I get on my comments, mostly because I have no great faith in my nation to do great things, or even the most simple of things like standing together and saying this is wrong and demanding all legal punishments ( boycotts etc ) that can be heaped upon something awful like FOX news, be heaped upon them. I love my country still, and I still serve it's citizens, though not in uniform any longer, but my country hasn't shown me what my blood, sweat, and tears have bought, if anything, and until it does I have so little faith left in it's citizens that it sometimes leads me to despair, even now, 8 years after my military career ended.
@MR2car
@MR2car 10 лет назад
"Your soldiers" part was very true. The American financial support to Egyptian military shows how you americans can influence the mentality of an army, they now protect their people instead of Dictators. You are doing even better, going at the other end of the globe, trying to get shit straight. Do not loose faith in your people and your country. Just to reassure you, my country, France, makes me desperate, on many levels. I suggest you turn off Fox News, and think with positivety for your own future and accept the past, try to remember all the smiles instead of the tears you had. I have been in the middle east a few times and a lot of (cultural)muslim friends. I hope you will still be able to enjoy some parts of your life! When fighting a war, one of the first tactics of propaganda is to dehumanize the enemy. So people who believe into it still believe every Muslim to be an enemy regardless if they're radicalized. Nothing wrong with depicting a soldier and his muslim wife in an advertisement. However, they are not being totally honest here. In the TV commercial, she is wearing the hijab and on the billboard she is wearing a niquab. Why the difference? I think the advertisers want the billboard to be more eye catching, sure, but also they were anticipating the controversy to generate more exposure for the brand. Now ask yourself, if they had chosen to put her in a burqa on the billboard, what kind of controversy would that generate?
@tedtrash
@tedtrash 10 лет назад
Yes, I completely agree. I made my comment because the other point was overlooked. It is odd, because they are usually pretty savvy about the intentions of marketers when they run stories like this on TYT. If you wanted to run both points together, you could say that the advertisers knew they could count on this religious intolerance to spark a contoversy and that is truly a sad state of affairs. Just because one side of a controversy has outrageous, deplorable or just mistaken views does not mean it is not a controversy. I think it is important to distinguish between false or fabricated controversies where one side reports outrage that does not really exist, and situations where one side is simply inarguably wrong.
@MandyCummins
@MandyCummins 10 лет назад
The company did that purposely. I saw the ad and when it's "revealed" that she is muslim and he's a soldier I cheered, and then I said "Oh dear, heads will roll." I think it is so sad how many are ignorant about Muslims and hate them all, what could possibly be wrong with a Muslim woman married to the American soldier, I would look at such a billboard and see a strong message for peace and unity across religions and cultures, how could that trigger someone's PTSD? Also what do ground zero have to do with it, I am pretty sure neither of the actors in the add where involved in that, almost all Muslims condemn the terror attacks against America or anywhere near, in fact again I think such a post is perfect for such a location as even if it is trying to sell a product it after all do show an image of peace. The discrimination that fox news show here and the states refusing to accept this add need to work with themselves and get a bit less bigoted.

How do they even know if that's a hijab or not? Is my granny Muslim now since she wears a headscarf?

Although I agree with you I can tell you that, that IS a hijab.

Yeah, we know it is a hijab, but the point is that they just automatically assume that a piece of clothing means that someone is off a particular background. Also, how is it bad? It's like the way they called Obama a Muslim. Someone said that the right answer is no he isn't, but the "righter" answer is why would that be wrong if he was.

This might be the type of ad I would make just to open a can of worms... too funny.

Cenk, you failed to note that the Muslima in the ad had a U.S. accent. She's not an import. She's American. Not a war bride.
