The Hero Classes of Vanilla

Hi !
World of Warcraft has 13 Classes of which 3 are considered Hero Classes, who do not play by the same rules as all the other classes. Most remember the Wrath of the Lich King expansion as the introduction to Hero Classes, but the concept actually is older than the game itself!
Today we will take a look at how Hero Classes were envisioned in World of Warcrafts first version, and how they came to shape much of the gameplay of the first few expansions, and Vanilla especially.
I hope you enjoyed the video, and that you learned something new. Thank you for watching!

It feels like there is so much opportunities for private servers with all this information being dug up again and people reminded of it. All that Blizzard is doing with SOD seems quite orientated towards a very different perspective. As if they are trying to appeal to a mysterious and mythical creature called "the modern gamer" which to me is really sad. Everything they seem to be doing lately is connected to measurable indicators for engagement and not towards what really a fantasy world is able to do and be. I am not saying that they are not trying, but with all the push from the community for Vanilla+ and the way they are responding to it, for me it seems a lot of recommendations and suggestions, and even plans for what they had originally in mind back in development of Classic, just flies over their heads. I know that this is their take on the matter and that this is their game, but man are they giving bread for private server developers. I know there is a server called Turtle WoW that is trying to create this, but just imagine if some people decided to stick to the roots and just use the developed assests and plans from the original Classic WoW. And what I mean is to just implement and use all the developed mechanics, class design and content that the devs originally planned but did not have the time to finish and implement. Not an "our take" sort of thing. Dunno, to be honest... What do you guys think?

@@PatRose I should definitely give it another try. Only gave it a shot in its early stages, but now it feels like they've done some serious work there. I remember when everyone there played a paladin because they were given too much love, haha. Hopefully they've balanced it out a little bit more.

I still wish the Vanilla+ path had been chosen over the total revamp with every expansion we ended up getting from TBC onward. I would have loved to play a WoW where old content wasn't invalidated and made irrelevant when new came out, but patches and minor expansions had built on it and added breadth and variety instead. Hero classes would have been an amazing way to build upon what already existed, especially since their release would allow players to do something new with their already existing characters rather than force them to make new ones. I would however had made the Hero classes not tied to race and only to class, as racial spells had already proven problematic as a game design feature at that point.
@VValkyr
@VValkyr 4 дня назад
You would. But let's be honest here lad, players like this are in the minority. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of vanilla plus or WoW going back to it's roots (as success of classic shows, is what many people want) but modern WoW is where it is today specifically because over years players requested WoW to be this way. Convenience after convenience, change after change, this is what players wanted.
@josejuanandrade4439
@josejuanandrade4439 4 дня назад
That wouldn't work. Old content would be invalidated once new content comes out... is like a part of life... Here.... pretend we are in 2007 and instead of getting TBC, we get a new patch with a new raid.. say Karazhan as new raid in vanilla... Obviously gear gotta be better then Naxx... so if you had been raiding Naxx you gonna move to Kara and only occasioanly go back to Naxx for maybe farm Atiesh... Noone will realy want to stay there long tho, because for most if not all, the new gear will be better... Other way, people wouldnt feel too motivated... And not to mention MC, BWL, AQ would be totaly abandoned... unless... Scenario 2: You need to gear people for Kara raid or maybe you are in a guild that is progressing from zero... Do you realy think people will want to keep runing every raid in succession just so they can raid the last raid? Not to mention, if you are a new player, your barrier to entry an already progressing guild would become impossible... we already see the gatekeeping going on in classic and SoD... cmon dude be realistic... people would quit in droves, not to mention, only adding patches instead of expacs would kill the game because the bulk of the game are the casuals... people that don't do much if any end game at all, like raiding, people that do enjoy questing, leveling, doing the dungeons once or twice.... Ima tell you something out of my persona experience. I been playing since 2004.. and all the way back in 2006 already, i could have told you that an idea such as stay in Vanilla forever was unsustainable. You see... I was in a big guild, and as happens, people would quit or go in hiatus, and we had to refill, or sometimes, we just got new people joining as it happens... to get people to go back to MC or BWL was way too fucking hard. We would schedule runs (and the guild was realy good in clearing the 1st raids quick) to gear up newcomers... and we often rand with 20 to 30 people no joke... and often we had to cancel and not even that many would show up. Expansions gives us a chance of a soft-reset so to speak, for those interested in mostly or only raiding... people could often reroll, as rerolling in vanilla was way to hard, for some impossible... but with TBC many people did reroll, either because they wanted to play the new class avaliable to our faction, or the guild needed a specific class/role for the raids, or simply because they were bored of the class they been playing for a couple of years. Our guild leader would tell people "if you want to reroll, this is your chance" AND like i said, expansions gave the people that enjoyed questing and leveling, the chance to keep doing that. If we had not gotten expacs, and instead, had gotten patches, what we would have gotten would have been much inferior.. say for example, Outlands... Originaly outlands was just gonna be Hellfire Peninsula... would you be happy with just that.. 1 zone? with much less content? In vanilla, patches meant new raids, maybe 1 or 2 new quests, thats it! Naxx brought in a short duration event previous to the deployment of the raid... AQ had the war effort and the opening event, AQ patch in fact was the patch that added the most content, but thats because Silithus was a zone that releazed with pretty much no content and then in AQ we got the content that it should had (tho was mostly dailies and more grind, but hey!) So compare what we got (the whole TBC xpac, 10 levels, like 12 dungeons, all the new raids, all the new zones) to have gotten 1 new zone with some daily content and finaly 1 raid (The Black Temple)... and the Kara patch would had just been a couple quests outside Kara for atunement and then the raid itself, or maybe we would have gotten Black Morass dungeon too, which would be needed for the atunement.. That dungeon had been in development since before vanilla anyway... So no, Vanilla+ is an idea i don't think would have ever worked, nor would realy work right now... only a very small niche of people that are too stubborn in their mindset, or dont want to accept they are wrong, would stay playing that version of the game. You probably would end up quitting the game 1 or 2 years into vanilla+ for good because lets face it, is not realy a sustainable mode.

What Hero classes ended up being in WoTLK were essentially just test run for paid boosted characters. Get to start 10 (or so) levels before end game to experience the new content right away (after a short starting zone.) Atleast that's my view. Maybe a hot toke or a stretch, but makes sense to me. (Personally I don't support or like the paid character boosts. But at same time I don't care that they are there or people buy them tbh.) Hero classes are cool, but my OCD always hated how you had less time to build an attachment with the character and have them start at a higher level. Seeing leveling is one of my favorite aspects of WoW. (Especially older versions.) And personally, how they originally intended hero classes to be, or having just "normal" classes added that most races (where applicable) could be. (Like the monk.) Would've been a lot cooler to see how that would've played out. Atleast those are my opinions. Good video with cool information. Keep it up. 🙏🔥🖤

Deathknight could have been amazing as a paladin hero class for humans. Make it fully flavourful, Add a quest that has you looking into Arthas and the silver hands then at a certain point you encounter Arthas and he kills you only yo raise you as one of his deathknights setting you back 5 levels but changing your entire kit and asthetic.

I look at it differently They are hero classes because they are based on unique and iconic heroes from warcraft 3 (arthas and illidan). They are the only units of this type and no other exist. (as opposed to Malfurion being druid for example, since there are plenty of other druid units, or Thrall and shamans.) Starting level is irrelevant.

This really makes sense. Maybe that's why the warrior is one of the "best" clases with it's really big toolkit, they were actually designing 6 clases and ended up with just one. Or why the priests had a race only spell that symbolices the religion of each race, but they were going with a full race-class unique combination... how sad is they went to develop the game in other ways and left out this phylosofy.
@Lejiapower

Imagine another timeline where they never released TBC and instead we got patches that little by little implemented all the original ideas that they had for vanilla wow
@krippaxxuseredarlordofthes9940
This concept makes so much sense to me. Lately i was thinking about what class to play if i ever played wow again (i think about this game frequently and make scenarious but only in my head). Was looking at wc3, as i still play that one, and looking at the race/class combinations of heroes there. Classes werent a thing back then, so i would think for example wc3 blademaster would be the equivalent of an orc warrior in wow, as one of the easiest examples of class/race-guessing and even made an appearance in this video. So some wc3 heroes definitly had a huge impact on theoretical heroclasses in classic.
@krippaxxuseredarlordofthes9940
*either blademaster is warrior or rogue would make sense too. Hes wielding a twohanded weapon in wc3, but has stealth. I imagine you could make the bm as a rogue orc too in this theoretical classic wow. Mayve call him bladesmaster 😂
