Narration by Emsoc.
DESCRIPTION:Christmas has become a holiday that is now in many places more than just a religious festival.
And this has positive sides and negative ones. It is often criticized how the spirit of the holiday is lost, and has changed to consumption of unnecessary goods. At the same time, for many people, who may not even be christians, the holiday is a time for the family to come together.
Merry Christmas! And Happy Holiday!

Great video, you gained a new subscriber! One thing: Spain celebrates the Three Kings Day (Jan 7th) where they give gifts as well, but this is addition to christmas with santa claus on christmas. Side note: Some countries in latin america have 'el niño dios' or baby jesus bring the gifts instead of santa, but this is being replaced by santa more and more.

The Three Wise Men day (in Spanish, los Reyes Magos de Oriente, "east's mage kings") is celebrated the 6th (night from the 5th to the 6th), not the 7th. Sometimes I had this mistake, because the 7th is the dreaded day when I went back to school as a kid and I didn't have memory of the numbers of the days before.

Actually, in Ukraine - Saint Nicholas is the guy who brings gifts to kids at night on December 19th. This is a very popular tradition, all kids in Ukraine are waiting this day the whole year. I'm an adult, but I'm still waiting this day every year :) Grandfather Frost was "invented" in the Soviet Union and present till these days in Russia, Belarus, and some other post-soviet countries.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم السلام على من ٱتبع الهدى Just to summarize, christmas is actually a pagan festival that was repackaged to appeal to newly converted pagans, also noted are similarities between the concept of a son of God and trinity in earlier pagan religions during the time of christianity as well the development of the trinity in christian theology itself after the nicean creed, before which such a pagan belief was seen as heretic

Christmas was celebrated before Constantine sometime in the second half of the third century. So the story of Christmas being a pagan festival that was repackaged is a long held but false narrative. Likely were falsely linked sometime in the 12th century and later 18th century, obviously much much further in the future. There are no assertions to Christmas and Pagan Festivals up until then. 'On the Solstices and Equinoxes' (written in the 4th century) it states Jesus was conceived on March 25th and suffered on the same date decades later. Nine months from that time (normal human gestational period) is December 25th. Augustine, in 'On the Trinity' written in the early 5th century, also links the two dates and specifically states December 25th for the same reasons. Not because of pagan festivals.

Sol Invictus used to be celebrated on the 17th of December and then moved to the 25th of December during the 270s by Emperor Aurelian AFTER Christmas was accepted as the date for Jesus birth (9 months after the 25th of March, his conception) in the early 200s. This means it was the Pagans that moved their holiday to the 25th of December (Likley to try to stop the rise of Christianity in the empire by this point) to the 25th to copy Christmas, not the other way around.

So the pagans celebrated the solstice on the 21st December, the festival was kind of like a bookend to the harvest festival - anything that was left over by now would either have to be eaten or preserved before the bitterest of winter settles in January - which then didn't have a name because it was so cold and dark... The tradition of feasting came from this. Many vegetables had to be eaten, and the rich would get the last of the game before game season was closed to allow the birds to repopulate. This brought the tradition of feasting, not in the name of Christ, but you can believe that if you so wish. The pagans would go wassailing, this normally involved a lot of alcohol, namely cider, which they would share with the trees in the hope of a fruitful new season. There was usually some gift giving too, but later on in the tradition. And this is why we drink a lot over Christmas. The pagans in England would welcome, who would later be knows as Father Christmas. He was jolly and great, a wreath crown adorned with holly and ivy, and a huge green winter jacket. He was the ghost of Christmas past in A Christmas Carol. He represented the whole purpose of the festivities - a celebration of life. Thanking nature for the wealth and prosperity of the months gone by, and praying and thanking for more to come. Together with family and friends, the Solstice period was a magical one and lead to many of today's traditions in England. I'm not Christian, but I use the word "Christmas" synonymous to this time of year, and I don't think other religions should be offended because you call it Christmas (see, in the UK, Holidays are in the summer... what many would call a vacation).

@captainobvious7668
@captainobvious7668 Год назад
Correct. Christ wasn't even born in the winter given the details of farmers in the fields around the time of His birth. Moreover, the bible says nothing about celebrating Christs birth, and the way christmas is celebrated is rooted in pagan origin of saturnalia, as you mentioned. These pagan festivites mixed with "christianity" and were kept and kept as tradition. However, Gods holy days are outlined in leviticus 23. Christ and the apostles kept the sabbath and these holy days (passover, the feast of tabernacles and others are directly mentioned in the new testament.) In fact, the holy spirit was given on the day of pentecost (in the book of acts.) In summary, true christians shouldn't actually keep christmas.

Wasn't Dec 25th a largely celebrated pagan holiday in Rome, and so when Constantine wanted to Christianize Rome, he moved Christmas from the original Jan 6th to Dec 25th in order to maintain the time of already large celebrations in Rome, but instead celebrate Christmas?

I live in Ethiopia for work. I’m from Ghana originally. Ethiopia Orthodox: Celebrate Christmas (Gena) on January 7. -They do not exchange gifts. -They actually go to church the night before. -They do not recognize nor utilize Santa Claus. -The holiday is entirely religious not commercial like in the West. This video is from a Eurocentric history, not the way Christmas has been historically celebrated in Ethiopia for 2,000 years.

No mention of the pagan roots? At least the solstice was mentioned, but not only in passing, but portrait as "close". The winter solstice marks the lowest point of the sun and a perceived pause of the sun as it stays in the same spot for 3 days. Those three days coincide with the supposed resurrection of this jesus character, so it should not have been understated. Still a good vid.

@@Zekushiiido no, christmas stole pagan holiday 1:1, they just inserted some crazy person who was having fun with his cult to celebrate his birthday. with christianization of Rome they just swapped holidays because people were already used to holiday in that time of the year and added story that it's in fact jesus' birthday. That's is beyond funny to me. we don't know when he was born, how old was he when he was crucified and when was he crucified. We just know that he existed and had a cult and that Pilate executed cult leader. Staging resurrection and fabricating evidence of "resurrection" is just insane but that's topic for another day

There's actually very little if any evidence he existed in the first place, so several scholars now think he think he was a Myth. Marc's Gospel doesn't mention a Jesus-birth narration, because that view assumes Jesus only started to become divine after his baptism as an adult, by John the Baptist. Mathew's gospel has Jesus'birth in Bethlehem (Mathew2:8, refs to Ruth1), but then immediately goes to Egypt (Mathew2:13). Luke's gospel is the only gospel which has sort of Christmas ideas, and only in Luke2:6-8 (or till 20) John's gospel doesn't mention a birth narration, because he thinks Jesus was born at the beginning of time.
@jey2275

It's Mark and he wrote his Gospel mainly for the Roman Audience , He wanted to keep it really short that's why Mark is the shortest Gospel not because he doubted Jesus was any less divine . We should more focus on 'scripture of holy Bible's ... personally I don't see a point to celebrate Christmas very foremost reason is 25 Dec( date ) is not mentioned in the Bible nor Bible says to celebrate Jesus birth day. Secondly, 25 Dec was Roman festival of Saturnalia to honour Roman god ' Saturn'.

I don't want to dwell on whether there is or there isn't a God. How do we surpass our primitive instincts and behave in a way where we are truly beyond the constraints of what religious systems impose on us? Hey Society of Geeks, with all due respect to your research, these theories are well known by Us (the Christians). So, in brief, I did not learn anything new from your video. When we adopted the various celebrations of Xmas, Christians have replaced all the pagan ideas/theories by the BEST EVER: JESUS CHRIST, our ONLY LORD and GOD. It does NOT matter what the origin was. It does not matter if he was born on the 25th of December or not. What matters is that we have replaced them all with OUR FAITH IN OUR ONLY LORD AND GOD JESUS CHRIST THE GREATEST EVER. Atheists, Jews, muslims, Agnostics, Leftist/communists, satanics (incl. yr boss Satan)- and whoever hates JESUS CHRIST and the Christians- will never win on the Church of Jesus Christ. The reason is, and as declared by our ONLY LORD and GOD Jesus Christ, the GREATEST EVER, the gates of Hell will never prevail on our Church. He is your GOD/Lord whether you like it or not.Therefore, if the goal of this video is to weaken our faith in our ONLY LORD/GOD Jesus Christ The Greatest Ever, MAY ALL THE GLORIES BE TO HIS HOLLY NAME. I am afraid to tell you that you have FAILED MISERABLY. However, if your goal is only to show the origin of some of our traditions, Then it is okay with us and we already know all of these theories.HAVE A VERY HAPPY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL . Always remember that JESUS is the reason for the season. May our ONLY LORD and GOD JESUS CHRIST, the GREATEST EVER, bless You and Protect you, your Families, your Friends, your Loved Ones for ever..AMEN

as a former catholic I can san that you're clinically insane, probably schizophrenic so I won't make fun of you. I have a friend with schizofrenia who obsesses herself with christian faith and it helps her so maybe it helps you too. but jesus was nothing more than a cult leader and he ended as he should. sad that we didn't learn from mistakes and cults are popular nowadays like scientology. but jesus as a cult leader did a pretty good job as his cult follower later created institution of local fishermans and lunatics now called papacy.
