The History of GDP Per Capita by Country (1960-2021)

The video shows the timelapse of world GDP from 1960 to 2021. Gross domestic product (GDP) is the standard measure of the value added created through the production of goods and services in a country during a certain period. As such, it also measures the income earned from that production, or the total amount spent on final goods and services (less imports). GDP per capita is gross domestic product divided by midyear population. GDP at purchaser's prices is the sum of gross value added by all resident producers in the economy plus any product taxes and minus any subsidies not included in the value of the products. It is calculated without making deductions for depreciation of fabricated assets or for depletion and degradation of natural resources. Data are in constant local currency.
Note: the data for the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia are estimates only since there is no reported data from these former nations.

But the secret of the world is that , the developed coutries are ahead of other contries 200 years ago. Nothing do with the so called freedom and democrocy, just check what thoes contries do 200 years ago, and you will know why they get rich.

Argentina pretty much remained stagnant for much of the 20th century. It's really bizarre how a country manages to remain in a vicious cycle of decline without any action to stem the loss and finally take off and grow. Such a shame that the country never reached its potential and destiny of becoming a world power. Other Latin American countries have now caught up and even surprassed it. Peru is right there, and Chile and Panama have even surpassed it.

Yes because Chiang Kai-shek, the man who made Taiwan a Tiger of Asia, died, and the CIA murdered Chung Hee Park, the man who made South Korea an economic powerhouse, and of course Marxists destroyed the Estado Novo of Portugal to ruin the tremendous success of Salazar.
@stafer3
@stafer3 2 года назад
@@DSocha-cu4qw Both are important. Both are showing different part of whole picture. You can’t just decide that one is what matters and the other one doesn’t. When someone creates valuable industry (lets say software development) people in that industry tend to have more money, that usually inflates prices for rest of local economy. Since they have more money they can outbid others and buy local houses, which makes prices of those houses higher. To be able to afford them other jobs demand raises as well, so everything becomes more expensive. That’s why GDP per capita PPP is important, because cook, barber or mechanic do the exact same work as cook, barber or mechanic from poorer country. So from that point of view with less money you can still get same life. But there is still that valuable industry (usually multiple of them) that is putting more revenue into that economy. So that economy is in fact richer. They can buy more stuff in terms of import. It’s not like some country just happens to overvalue their currency (usually when they do, they can’t keep it up long before it falls). Disregarding nominal GDP per capita takes away this insight.

I found an interesting fact that is sensitive to numbers. Note that India was 1/6 of the world average in 1960 and 1/6 of the world average in 2021. Sixty years later, India has stagnated. But China was also 1/6 of the world average in 1960, and now it is equivalent to the world average. The United States is now about 6 times that of China, that is, an average United States is equal to 36 India. It's terrible. If I were an Indian, I would find problems as soon as possible, learn skills and leave India for development.

India will likely be similar to China the next booming economy in the next 30 years with a relatively stable government. China meanwhile is slowing down. If you’re Indian and you want better living standards then go somewhere else, if you want to ride that development wave I’d stay. Nominal GDP is flawed. It's influenced by currency, which opens to speculation. US per capita is above $70,000 because of petrodollar status and the debt it accumulated. EU members per capita seem high because it's lifted by the value of euro. Northeast Asia per capita is relatively low because of high savings rate. In short, nominal GDP is a speculative value.

@robotube7361 2 года назад
@@tormentor6737 You are wrong. High Income doesnt mean higher standard of living. What people dont realize is that many of these high income countries also have insane living costs and citizens pay huge taxes. products also cost a lot. A better metric for quality of life is PPP than nominal GDP> The quality of life is measured by how much money you are left at the end of the month after all the expenses, rather than how much money one is payed. China has extremely low cost of living compared to western countries and one might even say they have comparable standards of living. Another thing is is messed up about GDP is its an average meaning it doesnt show the wealth redistribution which is very unequal in most of the western countries. Basically if you take away the richest 30% of USA you will end up with a 3rd world country GDP. Those richest 30% are insanly raising the GDP average.
@EPsuperFan
@EPsuperFan 2 года назад
I agree. Also during the Mao era it is also suppressed since most industrial and agricultural assets are not priced on capital markets at all and thus not counted into gdp. The accounting is simply different. Conversly part of the reason why China grew so much in the late 90s was because of capitalization drive countrywide where things started to get counted.

In 1991, right after introductio of "democratic reforms and liberal market economy" Russia's GDP plumets to yellow zone (2000-4.990 $). In one period they even slide into amber zone (under 2000 $). @@numetal_samurai I'm not familiar with the claim that USSR used to import grain from US. Thankfully, today Russia is one of the largest exporter the grain. As i can see worst economic situation in Russia used to be during the 90s "economic reforms". Russia hit the rock bottom. All these oligarch that we see in Russia are the product of the 90s "economic reforms". They can thank good, old, drunken Boris for their wealth. Regarding "Russian return to fascism", as far as i know Russia fought against fascism. Former fascist are today best American friends. And for the end let say something about state capitalism. This system saved US from Great Depression in the 30s, thanks to F.D.Roosevelt. And China is a classical example of state capitalism aldo many in the west stil believe that China is communist country.

You seem to forget that the brutal switch from subsidized and planned economy to market economy never happens smoothly. Decline is a part of the transition. Then there is the part of managing it, which can be handled greatly (damage limitation) or poorly (bankruptcies everywhere).

Another interesting phenomenon to observe is how each few decades a different South American country takes turns being number one. Mid twentieth century it was Argentina, then Venezuela, then Chile. We'll see who is next. There is a similar game of musical chairs I notice in the Arab world.

@jaha chan Yeah I guess it pretty much depends on country's import share in the trade balance. In my country though (south east asian), I would say 80% of primary and second goods are affordable and domestically produced. Only luxury items are not, like high fashion or sports car. Also, a lot of countries right now are increasingly less dependent on dollar with the appearance of bilateral swap agreement, which eliminates us dollar as an intermediaries currency in transaction. Especially in south east asia, most countries here have swap agreement with China, from which they import almost all basic neccesity tools like Air conditioner, laptop, smartphone, in a fair price
