Want to know just how messy the Mexican-American War truly was? The Texans captured Mexican leader Santa Anna and forced him to sign a peace agreement securing their independence. Then they pressured the US into annexing them as the 28th state. Mexico's new government meanwhile refused to recognize the agreement Santa Anna signed, and were enraged by this move. Since Texas did not have clearly defined borders, the US was determined to secure the region to the best of their ability and stationed troops near the Rio Grande. Infuriated, the Mexican Army attacked the troops and thus, war began.
