This is Part 1 of a 4 Part series examining the relationship between real world violence and violent video games. I have provided citations for a number of claims in this video, which you can find at the bottom of this description page.
In this video, I will discuss the history of violent game controversies, starting with Mortal Kombat and ending with the Grand Theft Auto series, trying to showcase in detail how the stigma against violent games manifested in mainstream media and in US politics, in an effort to refute the narratives being promoted about how "games make people violent."

I'm still floored whenever I get reminded that NIGHT TRAP of all things factored into the congressional hearings on violent videogames in the 90s, the entire game is specifically about trying to prevent the violence and it really feels like a parody with how goofy some of the scenes they chose to make an issue of were.

part 3 isnt out yet, ive been too busy with other projects to come back to it, had a lot of research to do and other stuff took priority. if you want some pointers, look up social psychology papers or sociology papers about the effects of violent content on audiences, particularly game audiences. there's a lot of stuff out there.

It's kinda weird how Cop Guy worded the difference between violence in video games and movies, like you're more likely to be violent because your simulating that action instead of watching an actor simulate it. It's like this accidental condemnation of actors.

1:38 Just because a parent might buy the game having not known what it was, doesn’t mean they have to leave their kid unsupervised with it. I guess it’s good we have the rating system but if parents were overseeing what they’re kids were doing, we wouldn’t really need it in the first place.

wb again! When all is said and done, I genuinely _do_ find it disturbing how so much of our popular media and entertainment is just violence and people killing each other. But that aint unique to video games.

For me this isn't entirely wrong but incomplete. When President trump and other republicans still try to use this to deflect from gun violence and the increasingly authoritarian grip that is coming from them on other issues it seems naive to completely dismiss such issues.

I feel like that line of deflection was dropped pretty quickly though. At this point video games are entirely too mainstream and attached to the next generation of republicans for that to really be a recurring talking point.
