My little youtube house for all of my various projects. I have an interdisciplinary background which combines History, Sociology, Psychology, Media Studies, and Gender Studies. I use this channel to apply this background to various topics of interest, usually focusing on media and contemporary culture. I'm also a musician, so you may see uploads of my music on this channel from time to time. I don't have a strict schedule for new videos, but you can expect to see new videos every now and then. I may also stream on twitch from time to time.
Yeah, this movie was excellent! Acting was outstanding, sound design and cinematography made it very pleasing to watch. I've seen this movie about 6 or 7 times. Sadly, I've shared this movie with friends and they did not enjoy it like I did.
incredible work, i really appreciate games being critically examined in the context they were created in. though i think what most resonated with me was the bit about existing in vast video game spaces as a means to be truly alone with yourself. ive never heard anyone else say something like that, but i've always been drawn to games with a lot of breathing room, and to this day i still fire up games like this just to hang out in them. okay, second thing - i cried real tears thinking about your stated implications of father grigori tending to his flock. anyway, can't wait to click around on your videos page some more <3
Art and video games are my two favorite things! A series where you looked at how art history can contribute to the meaning of mario 64 would be amazing!
Bro, I'm like 4 minutes into this video, i just wanna say you talk abt an elegant dance like quality w/mario 64's gameplay, you got an elegant dance like quality with words. It's really refreshing to see a video essayist not try do a bunch of essayisms to 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘮 smart, and instead just do well with using brevity/not overcomplicating shit, but yet keep an intellectually stimulating the manner of speech in tact, i fwt. It's ballsy to let a script speak for itself and not bombard with adhd style editing nowadays too, keep going. Subbed.
"His wife is DEAD!" is one of the worst things Gord does in the film, upsetting Drew Barrymore's character for his selfish need to know where Dave Davidson is.
I would absolutely love a longer video going in depth on the horror of Luigi’s mansion if you’re ever interested in making it. It’s so creepy in ways that its successors aren’t I feel (not to fault 2 and 3, I love them both).
This is my absolute favorite video of yours, Malrose! Absolutely genius the both of you, you and Nintendo. I first watched it while drinking water, and then proceeded to go to bed very early; a wonderful evening of decisive peace. Super Mario 64, or as I call it, Soup 64, is our forever-game, and it's like the Tower of London; every inch is rich in significance. And its battling the darkness of nihilism while in the liminal.
I'm so glad someone made this - I'm a mega fan of this film and always thought it should be studied for it's themes. Not joking. There's so much to unpack in this film: work being seen as sacred, getting self worth from being employed (and feeling worthless when unemployed), the relationship between father and son etc I also believe it should have been called "Get a Job".
Pretty sure it might also be a safeguard so that Mario never clips through the ground while spawning into a level. (Something even modern game engines still struggle with.)
Great video, I loved that you noticed the meaning behind the level intros. As soon as you illustrated that it became obvious, my subconscious has always noticed it but I’ve never been overtly aware that there was any meaning to those different entrances. there’s one prevailing reason that the game holds up so well after all these years, and despite the game having countless fantastic design elements, it’s the movement-physics and sense of kinetics that the game just f’n nailed so hard. That’s really what blew our minds back then, Mario 64’s controls and physics were a big leap forward. Nintendo is always innovating and always making the most of their substantial talent.
You can simplify this whole video like this: >You see a painting >Painting seems to have a certain thing >jump onto painting >teleport into a world inside a painting >you see in the world the said thing that you saw it drawn in the painting
Great video, love Mario 64 and how much people still get out of the game is crazy. From one videoman to another, a quick tip: whatever you're using to record, be it a mic or your phone, wrap a sock or two around it. Easy pop filter that'll cut out unsightly pops and air hitting the mic.
It’s a bit backwards but the movement in this video reminds me of Pseudoregalia. In that game you can get to so many places without all the movement abilities unlocked and it felt super satisfying to do so.
I never saw this wall as an obstacle. When I played it, anything in any levels, was simply environment. The only thing I consider obstacles are things that can't be done, or maybe some enemies. (Elden Ring, looking at you 😑) The rest is all just interesting map architect. ♥
I never realized the importance of the somersaults but as a kid I did notice how the Bowswer levels and the secret stages dropped you in with a different animation. Great video and great analysis.
mario also falls when he drops into the vanish cap switch course, does a somersault as he phases into the fly cap stage, and does a somersault when he drops into hazy maze cave. this doesnt really connect to the themes of the vid, i just got curious and had to find out
