Gandalf doesn’t use real crazy magic because the gods that sent the wizards to middle-earth commanded them not to. He COULD burn down a whole forest or smash a mountain to dust, he just chooses not to

Which he kind of does in the hobbit since it came before the lotr and the original version had quite some differences, mostly with gollumn and the ring.

They should show one instance in the films where he shows just how powerful he can be. That's the one thing as a kid which made me not like this as much. Harry Potter came out at the same time and when I saw what wizards could do there, lots just seemed boring. I love it now, but still would prefer to see some heavy uses of magic just a couple of times.

@offworldrjp2347 I understand why, the lore and reasoning is solid, simply wish he got a day pass. But yes, the mountain thing was nice. I did, however, not like how the "battle" between Gandalf and Saruman in the first movie. The spinning scene was a bit silly to me. Not sure if that's how it is in the book, but didn't think it was tense. Sauron being giant flaming eye was a bit weird to me as well. Seems like a strategic error on saurons part.
@JourneyTal1
@JourneyTal1 6 месяцев назад
I think that’s sort of a misconception of why Gandalf doesn’t use his abilities. Gandalf as Olórin (his Mair form) *can* do crazy stuff like that but due to the devastation wrought upon Middle Earth by the battling Valar and Mair during the war with Melkor in the first age the gods basically decided it’s too dangerous for Middle Earth’s people if they were to use their full powers to combat Sauron and so the compromise was sending Mair to Middle Earth baring the raiment (physical bodies) of mortals with their full powers being heavily suppressed which is one of the reasons Grima can backstab Saruman with a knife and kill him. He’s in a mortal man’s body using magic. He’s not comparable to a god unless he were to forsake his mortal flesh which I don’t think he knows how to do at will like Sauron can since the Mair who become the Wizards also lose most of their memories to the point they need to take time relearning many things

One reason why the riddle scene is so long is because it’s extremely close to the book. It doesn’t have much cut out of it, being one of the most famous scenes from the book.

There's a few reasons why Gandalf chose Bilbo for the Quest of Erebor. 1) Gandalf was a friend to Bilbo's mother, Belladonna Took. 2) Bilbo showed a lot of promise in his youth. 3) Bilbo was still a bachelor and a hobbit of means who didn't have anyone else tying him down.

The beef between dwarves and elves goes back several thousand years more, when the dwarves killed Elu Thingol, the first king of the elves, over a necklace. It was again the same thing, the dwarves claim Thingol didn't pay them, but I do believe they just wanted the Silmaril and killed him out of greed.
@Catherine.Dorian.
@Catherine.Dorian. Год назад
I’d agree cause that was like their fatal flaw, the rings fed their greed for gold and such while humans it was power and the elves made their own so the sway wasn’t theirs (but I’d say the elves immortality is their issue that cause they’d see life in terms of hundreds and hundreds of years in the way we would look at maybe days they wouldn’t see “trivial” issues the same)
@Makkaru112
@Makkaru112 Год назад
It’s more complex than that. And it was a big deal since Thingol literally was one of the OG elves to wake to the stars and or was a child of one of them. Related to Tata and Tatyë. Galadriel herself is 25th generation away from that couple

Also further back in history the Elves hunted and killed the first Dwarves they encountered, Petty Dwarves, thinking them to be beasts. Later, they met other Dwarves, and realized their error, but by then, they had nearly wiped out the Petty Dawrves. This brought a first cause of division between the Dwarves and Elves. Then the conflict of the Dwarves and Thingol. AMBA

Did you recognize Balin? The old dwarf from the group. He was Gimli's dead cousin from the first LOTR movie (tomb in Moria). And if I'm not mistaken, the one with the slingshot was the dead dwarf that had the book that Gandalf started reading in Moria in the same scene. Also, the trolls were the ones from the story that Bilbo was telling the kids in his birthday party.

Fun fact: Toliken wrote LotR as a "sequel" to The Hobbit, because the publishing company had asked for one. He really wanted to publish The Silmarillion, which he himself considered to be his most important work, but it was simply to big and Unmanageable, and also not evan close to finnished(Tolkiens son finnished it and finally published it about 4 years after Tolikens death, so yeah....), and so he decided to focus on the Ring that Bilbo found in Gollums cave. In the first editions of The Hobbit, the ring bore no significance at all, and only served as a tool to make Bilbo invisible, so in the new editions, Tolkien had to rewrite that entire sequence after coming up with the Rings origin. Tolkien wanted to publish LotR as one book, he never thought of it as a trilogy, but as one story. But the publishing company refused. Paper was still expensive in the late 40s/early 50s because the industry hadn't recovered from ww2 yet and fantasy wasn't a particulary popular genre at the time, especially not YA/adult fantasy, so they would not publish a 2000 something pages adult fantasy novel that they were not sure would sell. So they came up with the compromise of spliting the story in 3 parts and publish part 2 and 3 if part 1 sold well Thats the reason why LotR is a 3 part story. It was meant to be one book.

Yay, I'm glad you've decided to react to the Hobbit and that you're enjoying it so far! Some fun trivia for this movie: • When Bofur (the hat dwarf) throws the piece of food into Bombur's mouth during the feast scene, the actor actually managed to catch it in his mouth on the first take, so the excited cheering from everyone around him was real • The food in the Bag End feast was all provided by Denny's, and for a brief time during the movie's release they had Hobbit inspired dishes in their restaurants, along with collectible character cards for every Hobbit dish you order (I got Thorin, Galadriel and Gandalf!) • when Gandalf says Elrond is offering them food and the dwarves whisper to each other, Thorin's actor turns to Dwalin and says something along the lines of "We'll use the bathroom and then we'll leave."

Weird thing is they pushed and invented the trope of the brash unruly dwarf. When in the books and folklore is that they are very noble and powerful. Heck. Galadriel’s eldest brother of 3 literally discovered and befriended men and became the ultimate friend of dwarves. It was only one particular clan of dwarves that eventually caused trouble after being longtime friends with Thingol before a bunch of invisible factors played into causing them to kill Thingol. Who was the elves legacy and living memory to the elder days. Which you can see why most groups of elves especially the Sindar elves would have a problem with dwarves. It’s all complex and nuanced like our world which is steeped in history and Tolkien wrote these magnificent stories to be a part of our world. Restoring Anglo Saxon mythology after the destruction of their culture after losing the Norman war; his work also shedding light on various other cultures and mythologies. It was meant to be 2 movies directed by Guillermo del Toro, but Del Toro dipped and Peter Jackson (director of the LOTR trilogy) tried to save the project, until the studio made him elongate the story to 3 films. All out of a little children's book. The main reason why it's so inferior to the LOTR as a cinematic trilogy is the pre-production and editing. They gave Jackson 3 years of pre production in LOTR, but only a couple of months for Hobbit.

Did you know that the beef between the Dwarves and Elves go back to their creation: Eru, basically God, made the Elves as his firstborn children to inherit the earth, and a lower God, Aulë (pronounced: Owl-Aye), god of the mountains and forges. Aulë made the dwarfs but couldn’t give them life- only Eru can give things life. But when Eru found Aulë’s creations, he offered to give them life, but warned Aulë that if he gave the dwarves life they would be forever in spite and contest of Eru’s firstborn children, the Elves, as the Dwarves would be his Adopted children. Aulë accepted Eru’s offer and the dwarves were given life just after the birth and awakening of the Elves.

Thorin's beef really should only be with King Thranduil and the Wood-elves of Mirkwood Forest. The other Elves had nothing to do with the troubles of Durin's Folk. And Thranduil only rules the Woodland Realm (Legolas is his son), he is not the king of all Elves. Orcs and goblins are basically the same thing, but both Sauron and Saruman have experimented with breeding larger and stronger Orcs. The Uruk-hai are the ultimate Orc: Smarter, Man-sized and able to withstand the sunlight without being pained by it. "Goblin" is just the common man's (or hobbit's) name for Orc.

Here is a bit about Gandalf for you: Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves) Gandalf The Grey/White Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful. However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife; sadness; and longing. Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion” Galadriel herself not only witnessed this but as a student of Aulë and the other Valar she obviously had involvement in helping create the hallowed objects that housed the final flower of the silver tree Telperion that was the father of the moon and the mother of the sun was Laurëlin the golden tree and prior to the sun and moon they too used to wax and wane!

The animosity between and elves and dwarves dates all the way back to the First Age of middle earth and even further back to when the dwarves were created. That isn't to say there weren't periods where dwarves and elves were great friends and worked together (The making of the Doors of Durin and the War of the Last Alliance, for example.) But even when the Valar, Aule, first created the dwarves outside of Eru (the main God's) plan and Eru allowed the dwarves to live and gave them sentience, he told Aule that dwarves would forever have contentions with Elves. *shrug* But eventually, as you saw with Gimli and Legolas, they put their differences aside very quickly when faced with outside evil.

We must understand the differences between those two adaptations of Tolkien's universum : LOTR trilogy is 3 long movies made from 1200+ pages book. H-trilogy is 3 long movies made from 250 pages book. LOTR trilogy was made when most of FX was made as physical effects with many CGI scenes also but blended more or less. H-trilogy was made when the CGI was too easily done to NOT be overly used. And I guess they got too short time for NOT using it a lot - as I guess building smt takes more time than drawing smt in computer. LOTR trilogy was made for 8-9 years H-trilogy was made for 4-5 years. LOTR trilogy was about making alliances before the war with Sauron. H-trilogy was about the world separated by many interests long before the war with Sauron. LOTR trilogy was about desire of power. H-trilogy was about "dragon sickness" which is greed of gold. LOTR trilogy was about hobbits and elves mostly. H-trilogy was about dwarves and a hobbit mostly. LOTR trilogy was more epic and dark - a suiside mission with the stakes as high as the eternal enslavement of the world by satanic power. H-trilogy was more fun and adventure becouse it was made from childrens adventure book with lots of satire and comedy with the stakes as high as fighting one dragon for his gold treasure. But all in all is H-trilogy a realy good movie with great roles and lots of new areas of Middle-Earth to explore - its about eastern parts not about Gondor, Rohan but about the region of Rhovanion with different places and cultures. And IMO its more political fantasy movie about differing rulers and interests. And most of all its about how Bilbo got his Ring.

Why Gandalf choses Bilbo ? You're right is seems that any hobbit would do. But Gandalf knew Bilbo all Bilbo's life it seems (thats how Bilbo tells this at the start of the movie), and in the text from "Unfinished tales" (chapter "The Quest of Erebor") Gandalf mentions that he has been thinking about Bilbo sometime before their travel to Erebor. When Gandalf tells the story of Thorin's company and Gandalf's own input in creation of this company to Frodo and Gimli, while they all chill in Minas Tirith after the war. :) And it seems to me that Bilbo was at this point the only single guy (not burdened by family obligations) from the area Gandalf knew about or even more so the only single guy with Tooks blood, and it was important becouse Tooks were known for being more adventurous and as the ones who long time ago have traveled with Gandalf, as at least two of Bilbo's uncles did - they were sons of the Gerontius "the Old" Took (one of Thains of the Shire, its like a steward, an office for crisis times created for the sake of old kings - Thain is a representative of the king of Arnor for the Shire), while Bilbo's mother was one of the daughters of Gerontius.

I may get roasted for this take, but I think the first Hobbit movie is really on par with the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. I think the second one is pretty good as well, but of slightly lesser quality. I don't hate the third one, but you can really see where they were running out of money for some of the CGI effects. I also know the story of the three Hobbit films doesn't stay fully true to the original book, and that it incorporates some things from the Silmarilion to stretch it into three films. Some of that I also don't mind. For instance, seeing what happens at Dul Guldur is pretty cool.

I think Thranduil came to help Men of Dale, he still had good relationships with them long after the first dragon attack and brought them supplies after the second one, tried to keep them safe when Dain came to fight for Thorin.... He didn't want to risk his kingdom (dragon can burn down the forest in like 3 min) and immortal lives of his elves by trying to save those who tricked him, humiliated him. From his point of view they kind of brought dragon fire upon themselves by being greedy and he had no obligation to help them to fight the dragon, tho of course from the moral point of view he definitely should have provided them with food at least.

Rings of Power isn't the disaster a lot of people make it out to be. And I've been reading LOTR and other materials of Arda since the 90s. I can easily point and tantrum about decisions Peter Jackson made, but the same people who get mad at Rings think the movies are beyond reproach. Now, in terms of media quality without considering lore? To me Rings is on par with the Hobbit. It has moments of greatness and moments of smh. It's not as good as the LOTR films, but it's enjoyable. They do need to make serious improvements to Galadriel, but her being a bad-ass warrior who gets dirty isn't the issue. Tolkien himself named her Man-Maiden. Indeed, her being arrogant also isn't the issue. The Noldor are a proud folk. And... I'm not really interested in arguing with anyone so don't @ me. XD Just my opinions. As yours as yours.♥

She had the literal power to launch a bounty on Sauron if she just wished it and the whole middle earth would respond. That and running away from your resumes daughter also doesn’t look to great. One thing I find extremely.. unfitting.. is the Rivendell sequence: While Dwarves of Erebor weren't happy about Elves, Elrond and RIvendell still commanded quite a lot of respect among the Nobility of the Dwarfs (and by extention this group). Hell, Elrond the Lore-Keeper was likely the only one that Thorin, in all his bitterness for High Lords of Elves, considered being even close to possible, useful "friends" out there. They'd have respected the Last Homely House - not make an complete arses of themselves while in there. In this case, need for "comedy" destroyed quite a bit of important world/character-building between Dwarven and Elven folks.

One thing worth considering is that Tolkien enthusiasts can be… let’s say, a little bit overprotective over the source material 😂 so they usually come with some big ass opinions on everything that’s not the LOTR trilogy. It’s understandable, but I thoroughly enjoyed The Hobbit, though I can agree that they should have gone practical over CGI. The same goes for Rings of Power: it has its ups and downs, probably a LOT of downs in their first season, but I wouldn’t say it’s completely unwatchable. It has some very good episodes and moments which made it worth to me to suffer through the pacing issues and, agreed, pretty big changes in the lore. I don’t know, maybe even consider trying a few episodes on your own and see if it sparks some interest.

The problem with Rings of power is that the Tolkien estate would not sell the rights to the Silmarillion, and the only story they could use was the appendixes from The Lord of the Rings. Amazon would have better to either not make the show, or to make it as a show based off the Silmarillion. It’s not a bad story but it’s not Tolkien’s book. But the blame should be divided between the two major factions. Btw, Balin is Gimli’s cousin, it’s his memorial in the mines of Moria at which Gimli is crying. And Gloin, in this movie, is Gimli’s father.

I’ll also remind you that they just ran an old sick horse til it died of cardiac arrest and then only had a ten min coffee break to loosely honour this horse. Not to mention Tolkien loved animals in a deep way. They also have been causing environmental damage one of which being King Charles ancient forest to make a set. It’s scandal after scandal. And the fire in studio that took four hours to put out with firemen for yet another example. PS they don’t have the rights to the Silmarillion nor anything much of the second age let alone the first. Only the trilogy books and their appendices…. Remember that they also plagiarized tonnes of films in nontasteful instead of true a homage way… tempest in me but when threatening Fëanorean bloodshed in the court of Numenor was from Cate Blanchett’s Elizabeth role which was done with grace and poise of a veteran actress(which doesn’t even sound like anything those of the great chill house of Finarfin would even act like. Again it’d be best to put Elrond there due to Elros. But ooook let’s make girlboss do everything. Even if it continues to make zero sense. )😍 fact they downplayed Elendil, Gil-Galad and Finrod is beyond infuriating and not explaining Elwing, Elronds mother beyond just showing her as a swan lol. Like. What’s worse is Grandpabimbor…. Let’s not forget good ol’ Guyladriel either. The LOTR version of Star Wars’ Rey! Guyladriel the Female Fëanor without any of his charms and subtleties and wit… just the bloody violent rages…

They got an open world Lord of the Rings game since 2007, except it’s an MMO. Lord of the Rings Online. They just did a new update - might be something to stream.

This might be late and someone else might have already warned you but without spoilers, Ring of Power ruins the whole universe. It's pure Mary Sue main char with 0 emotion and some of the worst writing for all of the chars in general. I'd say watching that is the closest one can get to feeling like Gollum when he was tortured for information, just more sadistic.

Each to their own but I find the action in the Hobbit films so stupid and cartoonish. They really screwed the Hobbit up after getting so much of The Lord of the Rings so right.

I personally enjoyed the rings of power bc it was just more of the the world of middle earth. The writing wasn’t the best but tbh it’s still a fun watch. My favorite movie is the return of the king bc it is just so powerful and has so many good moments. By far the LORT is my favorite fantasy genre
