What do you expect? It's OVER. DONE. just watch his new stuff, he has lots of great behind the scenes for all his projects. Unless you're just a lotr fan then just read the books....... Jesus
Real. I need Peter to do another movie. Anything. I mean for heavens sake we need him to take over the rings of power. If filming style is somthing else. It adds a mood that brings more life to the movie. The rings of power lacks that and the show itself is bland and flavourless.
Aqua Pony I don't want a Silmarillion movie. They would have to modify it sooo much to make it watchable. The main thing about it is that there was never a main protagonist, only separate tales of different heroes, and many of these heroes would war and squabble with one another, making it pretty hard to follow if not in book form; especially consider that the events of the Silmarillion span about 5 thousand years, if not more. It would be impossible for the chronology to make sense on film without changing the story drastically, at which point it won't be the Silmarillion. PLEASE don't touch Silmarillion, PJ.
well then maybe he could make a series of movies each depicting a different story of the silmarillion, it doesnt have to be a feature film, i just want to see the stories come to life
Great to see one of these focusing on the music. For me, it's always been one of the most important things in any film. While acting and visuals are big ones, obviously, music sets the tone for scenes and brings the environment to life somehow. You notice when the score cuts out. The instrumentals in these movies have always impressed me. That's some talented composing with a damn good orchestra to play it.
Mr. Jackson, thank you so much for doing these blogs, they are wonderful and great! The music to a movie adds so much, and speaks the language of emotion. Great job on your movies!
Having now seen the movie twice, I can say that the score really plays a great part in setting the tone. Right from the beginning and when "The Desolation of Smaug" is shown on the screen you can tell the danger has really been turned up in this film. As always...great work to Peter and all of those associated with the film.
If we doesn't get a trailer or Production Diary for The Battle of the Five Armies soon, I will personatly kidnap all the dwarfs and feed them to my cat.
In my orchestra, if you're on your phone or it rings, you gotta sing a song. Even our conductor does it. It's a effective way to keep people from doing things on their phone.
I like how this blog was devoted to the music of he film. I love music, and I find myself listening to Howard Shore over and over again. I played in an orchestra for three years, and that has therefore given me a deeper appreciation towards music, and this blog was just amazing. Love the music, love the movies, the double bass rocks!!
I love the music of The Lord Of The Rings and the music of The Hobbit is even better. Howard Shore is a mastermind. So thank you Peter for all the Blogs and i can't wait for the next one next year. Everybody have a beautiful christmas time.
What I found to be a little odd, was that the main theme of the first movie (which was based on the Dwarwe's Misty Mountains) was completely absent in the second film... I really liked that tune, and thought it was going to be the main theme throughout all three films, just like there had been ONE main theme song (you know which one I'm talking about) going throughout the whole of the LOTR-films...
I felt the same, but if you actually think about it, in this movie, there's really no place where that theme would have actually really fitted in. It's not just optimal to have it in this movie :P
Niclas S I agree, but the main theme song goes through fight scenes, as well as "landscape scenes" (in which there are, however, few in, in part 2) .. . Examples of "fighting-versions" of "misty mountains" can be found in the first movie, when the company fights the trolls So I assume they COULD have fitted the general tune into the second part if they wanted to, but I dont quite see why they didn't... I loved it :)
I just want to say a big thank you for this channel with all the Hobbit behind the scenes footage here. At the time The Hobbit was made my family were going through some tough and sad times and because of my family responsibilities I missed out on the movies and all the other things I’d enjoyed around the LOTR trilogy. I’ve just spent about a week watching the movies, original then extended, and all the footage I could find and it has been such a joy. Thankyou once again.
The movie was fantastic, and I can't wait to watch the blogs for the next one before I get to see the last part of this amazing trilogy. The blogs make me feel like a part of the gang and I can share in the magic through them. I was very young when LOTR's came out and I never got to see them in the theatre or anything like that but this time around I can. So, these blogs are wonderful and do us fans a lot of service. Thank you Peter and company! :D
I loved these production diaries. They made you feel like being a part of it or at least they shed some light on how those three awesome movies were made. I also would have been very interested in learning about the process of actually working with the book. Meaning, who decides which parts of the book to keep, to change, to leave out or to add - and why? Who's writing the dialogs? Etc. Anyway, thanks a lot for those epic movies and the funny vlogs.
The soundtracks are always amazing! When I first saw DoS, and the title screen came on, the piece playing just hit me right in the heart! It set the tone of the movie straight away and I was a little bit afriad of what was to come (despite having read the book)! Thank you for this look into the composing/recording stages-- very cool!
Peter, you are amazing! I love what you did with the LotR trilogy and i'm confident that you will make this hobbit trilogy just as amazing! I love that you taken the time to make these production diaries for us fans. to me it is gold worth to see behind the scens! Keep em up!
That title card shot with the music is fantastic! When I saw the movie last week that one shot with the purple sky and the darker music just set the tone of the film for me and really was an incredible shot. The music in this couldn't be any more different to An Unexpected Journey but it has a darker more urgent feel with a lot of thematic pieces that recur through the whole soundtrack. I was especially impressed with the music and its use in the movie especially the scenes near the beginning and the ones at Dol Guldur. I'm going to see it again in IMAX tomorrow and I bet it'll sound great on IMAX speakers. Another fantastic production blog peter. It is really great that you dedicate your time in the busy filming periods to make these. Few moviemakers keep fans as appraised during the movie-making process as you do and you should be commended for that sir!
Someof you might think Shores score wasnt as strong with the Hobbit films than The Rings movies, but they are better than 80 percent of all other movie scores that come out in a year! Will these Production Diarys come out with the Blu Ray release like An Unexpected Journey did? I want these so bad!
There IS something we can proclaim a thing Tolkien would have been absolutely satisfied with in the Hobbit 2 without a smallest hesitation, it is the MUSIC! ;-) I love you, Howard, for not only colouring, but even enriching almost every corner of Middle-Earth! I can now even imagine roaming through its images without your music accompanying Tolkien's text...(as in Phil Dragash's LOTR audiobooks)
Wow. How I regret not being one of the musicians involved in this masterpiece. It would be such an honour to play these tunes on cello and knowing they contribute to such great movies :)
This video blog probably made me the happiest so far, since I'm a huge music nerd. I just got the soundtrack last night and seeing how it was made and all the people who helped make it just makes it sound even more gorgeous.
indeed,i like alot of the hobbit, but compared to the lord of the rings, the cgi was a bit too..cartoony,felt more like a kids story then a legit one. Good locations, good writing, great music...but that just reduced my rating by quite a bit. For example, the uruk hai in the lord of the rings looked like deadly savage beasts that wanted nothing more then to taste manflesh,it was a serious story . While the hobbit takes a more comedic aprouch. there was like 1 time when i felt goosebumps in the movie, while alot of scenes of the lord of the rings gave them (arrival of elfs at helms deep, epic battle of helms deep, minis tirith and my favorite...the charge of the rohirrim),those really put you on the edge and gave you joy when backup arrived the last second to turn the tide of the bloody battle!
U nailed it! The battle of the five armies is a good example of not poor animation but still animation vs reality. The orcs was real and felt, as u said, dangerous and bloodthirsty. Well i guess that the directors take the "animated" chance before making it "real". You got me?
So far I've really enjoyed your movies Jackson, can't wait to see how it all ends. Really have my hopes up that you will continue making movies about the Lotr lore, perhaps going further into the dwarves, and elves. Involving some more Dwarves. like the Iron Hills, the siege of Erebor, the expedition to re-capture Moria.. It would be lovely to get further into the world of Middle-Earth then we already are with the past movies! Cheers for the hard work! :)
I need more Fili scenes in There and Back Again. Fili talking and being protective of Kili. Fili and Kili being brothers with brotherly love and Fili, Kili and Thorin being Heirs of Durin! That would be so great. You just can't help but loving them.
Hi Peter Jackson! I don't know if you will ever see this message but I would just like to say thank you for putting these blogs up, I have always wanted to go into the world of cinematography since I bought my first camera, I just applied to go to Uni and study film making and I hope one day I will get the chance to work with the likes of you. You inspired me so much I even talked about this video blog in my personal statement and why the videos made me want to go to Uni, so thanks again! Can't wait to see the rest next year! Off to see the second movie after Christmas and can't wait to see it! Jack,
Been waiting for this production 14!! And now its out. Good job peter, and just wanna say merry christmas to you and your fellow crew. love from Norway
I saw the film on Sunday, everything about it was incredible!!!! I'm gonna miss these video blogs...can't wait when you return with a new one, Sir Peter Jackson! =) I'm definitely seeing DOS again right after Christmas.
If Peter is reading this, love u mate. Loved the film - I thought it was an improvement over the first, but they both would have made Tolkien proud. I love what you did with this film and you have inspired me to want to be a filmmaker too :D
It's been a dream of mine to get to sit in on the recording of a score for a movie as grand as this one. Thank you so much for giving us an awesome peek behind the curtain!
Just saw the movie again for the first time on xfinity on demand and loved it. I watched it at the cinemas and absolutley enjoyed it there as well. I thouht t was really awesome that you put some video diary production videos at the end of the movie
Thanks again Peter for another amazing production diary (: We do appreciate the effort, time and work that goes into them. Merry Christmas and happy new year
Been waiting for the new production diarys for over a year. Now that the movie has been out for a month or 2, I guess I have to accept that he just isnt going to deliver ):
I have watched most of your movies..... those are really spellbound!! I am completely blown away by the artistic superiority, your magnificent treatment of the subject and larger-than-life cinematic appeal. You, James Cameron and Steven Spielberg are the real trinity of movie-making which make people go to the theatres vs video rentals. Hats off to you.... Planning to find a nanny ASAP to watch my kid while I can enjoy Desolation of Smaug on HFR 3d :)
It must be a nightmare to be a film composer working with a director sometimes. Jackson says he wants music "that is almost beautiful, in a way." How on Earth can you interpret that into a large scale orchestral piece?
haha, I think when You are Howard Shore it is easy enough. ;) Theres a video somewhere that shows how Howard Shore writes down the score whilst reading the original book. He's incredibly talented.
Thank you so much Pete for such an awesome... Ummm... I was gonna say film but its way more than just a film... An awesome EXPERIENCE!!! Everything: the blogs, music, sketches/ planning, great effects, hobbiton, and of course; the movie!!! You are undoubtedly the best director ever!!! And desolation of smaug is the best movie ever!!! (Closely followed by an unexpected journey and all the Lord of the Rings films)!!!
Is there going to be a Production Diary 15? Anything more for Battle? I'm jones'ing so bad for more. My sons and I have viewed Hobbit and Desolation about fifteen times since we were able to pick up the latter in March, I think it was. Must... have... more, hehe.
It'd be awesome if they continued Middle earth movies, Not following books but off cannon stories. Make it a huge universe to explore, they're doing that with star wars now and look at the game Shadow of Mordor! That opened up a whole new side to the orks i never knew. It'd be awesome if a movie Executive reads this, Middle earth is needed! P.s Tell warner bros to buy New Zealand aswell, it might help
