Graham Nash wrote this about Marianne Faithful; the story goes he was too shy to use her name, so he changed it. Nash left for CS&N and was replaced by Terry Sylvester. Y’all need to hear the studio version with the steel drums instead of violins.

The too shy to use Marianne and used Carrie Anne is supported by Nash in a documentary telling the band's history. It was on the Sky Arts channel on UK TV about 3 weeks ago. Apparently they were in a London restaurant near her table but were too shy to talk to her.

Jay & Amber, you'll love their "On A Carousel for your 5th Hollies song!!! edit- This song is about the British singer-actress Marianne Faithfull, whose most famous romance was with Mick Jagger, but who also dated Hollies singer-guitarist Allan Clarke for a short time. "Marianne" was changed to "Carrie-Anne" so it wouldn't be totally obvious(per Graham Nash in 1995).

Peter and Gordon, A World Without Love (written by Lennon/McCartney) -- a little trivia on this, Peter Asher was jane Asher's brother -- Jane Asher dated Paul McCartney before he met his wife Linda years after this. Marianne Faithfull is a British singer and actress. She was a heartthrob for many and the boys here were no exception. They simply changed the name a bit and Bob's your uncle. According to Allan Clarke the song was written during a concert the group did with Tom Jones and the song was written mainly by Graham Nash and Tony Hicks with Allan Clarke supplying the lyrics for the middle eight. The introduction features vocal harmonies strongly influenced by the Beach Boys. The song features a steelpan solo, likely the first use of the instrument on a pop record. The solo (mostly a harmonized restatement of the vocal melody) was probably played by Trinidadian Ralph Richardson, though others argue it may have been Mario Gibbins. The song was recorded in only two takes on 1 May 1967 at EMI's Abbey Road Studios. The first take was a false start and can be heard on the compilation The Hollies at Abbey Road: 1966 to 1970. The song is a shy tribute to Marianne Faithfull, as was Gene Clarke's "My Marie".

These songs of the 60's were out when i was a kid, in New Zealand (although I'm from London) These songs would blare out from people's radios through the long hot Summers and us kids would sing and dance along on the beach or in our gardens. 😄 This chorus was stuck in my head for years and I loved the Hollies amongst others. Most of the 60s/70s songs had a catchy chorus, One of my fave songs was Sloop John B by the Beach Boys as it was about a boat and wanting to go home, bit emotional for me as I was abroad on the other side of the World for 5 years - no long haul flights then, just passenger ships which took 5 weeks to get to NZ and same coming back to England..which was enjoyable for us kids.

In the original version of this song that little instrumental break was played on a Jamaican steel drum, which they could never play live, so they just filled it with all kinds of fun things. Some times they would just play a tape of the steel drum or they would add strings like this video. Usually the band joked it up quite a bit during that part of the song.

The song was written about Marianne Faithful who had a relationship with the lead singer, so she is "Carrie Ann"

Gotta hit "Bus Stop" , "Just One Look", "King Midas In Reverse", and, of course, the classic CCR-styled "Long Cool Woman".....these are MUSTS for The Hollies

Graham Nash formerly with the Hollies, from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young wrote this song about Marianne Faithful, whom The Beatles later signed to their new record label, Apple Corps.

Good catch on the meaning of this tune, guys! Most people don't really pay attention to the lyrics and are simply swept away in the light, cheerful melody. But according to 'Songfacts', the story goes, "This song is about the British singer-actress Marianne Faithfull, whose most famous romance was with Mick Jagger, but who also dated Hollies singer-guitarist Allan Clarke for a short time. "Marianne" was changed to "Carrie-Anne" so it wouldn't be totally obvious. The group didn't let on that the song was about Faithfull until 1995, when Graham Nash spilled the beans in a documentary." This song marks the first use of steel drums in a commercial pop record.

I was very young during the British Invasion but I had two older sisters who loved all those bands so I heard them as a kid and still love those bands as well. Yes, we had the British Invasion, but we shared a lot of musical influence with the British. The great American Blues masters were hugely influential on the British as Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and so many others were influenced by American Blues. So, it was a mutual exchange.

Another cool band from the 60s many never heard of but were popular in Britain had a minor hit here called My white Bicycle-the band called Tomorrow with lead guitarist Steve Howe who later played with the group YES. One of the lost gems from the 60s.

I read that the song was a tribute to Marianne Faithfull. In the original single version, the band have a steel drum solo, instead of the string solo/section that appears in this "live" version.

The Hollies have a very eclectic songbook. Try: "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress"; "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"; "Bus Stop"; "On A Carousel".

One of the British Invasion bands that often get overlooked is Gerry and the Pacemakers. Like th ebeatkes, they were from Liverpool, and at one point, were actually outselling the Beatles in the UK (first 3 singles went to number one, first time a band had done that). Fery cross the mersey is the classic, and You'll never walk alone has become a football anthem.

Bus Stop (1966) was my favorite Hollies song until Carrie Ann came out in 1967. One thing I found interesting about watching this version is that Tony Hicks looks like a young teen here, though he is actually the same age as the rest of the guys (22, I believe).
