To be fair, in horus heresy the two barreled bolter are called combi-bolters and are the precursors to storm bolters. Other combi weapons are IDed by the other weapon, so combi-plasma, combi-melta, etc
Bolter: Automatic rocket launcher, specialized munitions to destroy flesh... Strength 4. Slugga: A rusty handgun. May or may not function. Doubles as a club... Strength 4. Very similar, yes thank you.
I mean yeah, but when you consider that these rusty handguns are usually bolters or bolt-based themselves, or fire slugs that make bolter rounds look small in comparison, it starts to make more sense
They aren't even that good at it though in the heresy era. I think they are at their peak in 40k under Logan Grimnar, when they are killing Grey Knights lol.
@@alfadasfire Yes they "killed" all of them supposedly, but we also don't have data on how well that went. Another factor to consider is baseline Wolves are actually very poorly equip to fight marines if you take lore into account
They are not a joke, a joke is a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline. Killing space marines is NOT FUNNY
Tonite on Ridiculous Gear: DK tries to steal a bolter but due to his little baby arms he drops it on his tiny feet, Bricky tries duel-wielding bolt pistols but the recoil alone snaps his wrists like a slim jim and Shy uses her big wrinkly brain to mount a heavy bolter ontop of Bricky's bonce where his forehead is the high ground
@@heboric6136 And even then, the Marines had to brace against a railing. Astartes is one of the best fan productions in any franchise Ive ever seen. Absolutely bonkers.
The imperium doesn’t want you yo know this but bolters are full of tiny ogryns that yell “FOR THE EMPRAH” and hurl the bolts through the gun at the heretics and xenos
My nephew has a real scar and he hates it. He literally bought the thing because he loved it in MW2. The thing is a nightmare to clean and the vast majority of parts/accessories that fit nearly all other rifles don't fit on the scar. To clean it you have to fold the stock. Well a lot of states in the US don't allow you to have a rifle with a folding stock. The state demands the stock be bolted so it can't fold. So essentially you buy a gun that you can never clean legally.
If you want to see just how much an M2 Browning is a real life bolter, check out the Raufoss Mk211 rounds that are one of the most popular bullets to put in them. While they are expensive ($75 a shot), the bullets are incendiary, high explosive, and armor piercing. They work kind of like a backwards bolter, where instead of penetrating first and then exploding, it instead deflagrates first on impact, softening up the armor and using the shaped charge to propel a fragmenting tungsten penetrator and a cloud of zirconium sparks into the target at 4000 ft/s. The International Red Cross has been quite insistent that militaries try not to shoot Humans with these. While they only detonate 50% of the time when you do (they're designed to shoot holes in armored vehicles), when they *do* explode the results are...ugly. First, the explosion is designed to be subsonic (it deflagrates rather than detonates), meaning that it will usually have penetrated 30-40 cm before really going off. As such, it will often explode *inside* the body, just like a bolter does, a process which renders that body part into little more than a cloud of pink mist and glowing sparks. Second, the penetrator will still fragment from the explosion, spraying a cone of tungsten fragments through the target and into anyone behind them. Ironically, you're *worse* off wearing body armor when hit by these, as they seem to go off basically every time if they hit an armor vest.
@@nukem8128 The BMG stands for "Browning Machine Gun," so...many people with great frequency. Especially since the M2 Browning is the most manufactured machine gun in the world.
For those interested in what an irl Bolter could be like, the weapon is heavily based on the Gyrojet (the channel Forgotten Weapons has an informative video on its history).
Yes and no. They're just tiny rockets, they lack the two-stage function of having a base charge kick it out the barrel before the rocket igniting. The 2A28 Grom mounted on the BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle, on the other hand, does work the way a bolter is supposed to, although it's single shot and just a bit bigger.
Deuterium is actually just a type of hydrogen that is used in fusion. GW writers didn’t know Wtf they were doing and thought “DURRRR HYDROGEN BOMBS GO BOOM SO MAKE BOLT ROUND FULL MAKE BOOM BIG!” and really they should have used uranium or ya know, ANY metal or radioactive material. Not hydrogen that’s useful for fusion 🤦🏻♂️
the Stern Gun was made by a plumber and it was bad but extremely cheap to make and very easy to clean and maintain in the field..... it was also nicknamed the "pipe gun" because it looks homemade.
Also the fact that nid adaptations by and large are not instant and generally are discarded once they leave a planet as they DRAIN BIOMASS LIKE CRAZY meaning they need to relearn the adaption every battle and exposer
Volkite guns have just CLASSIEST names. Tophat+monocle+pinky pointed out+ost-indian swagger type of classy. Like Volkite Demi-Culverin or Volkite Falconet.
Combi-bolter and Storm Bolter while basically the same thing are technically two different bolters. The combi-bolter was essentially two bolters strapped together and was used by both loyalists and traitors during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. The storm bolter was designed to be a better combi bolter and was made after the Horus Heresy. (EDIT: I found that the Adeptus Custodes did use a type of storm bolter called the Lastrum Pattern Storm Bolter, but that might be a retcon or an error in lore since the Lastrum Storm Bolter was introduced in the Horus Heresy: Inferno, the Seventh book of the Horus Heresy game series that came out in 2017. The writers might have forgotten that piece of lore or did a retcon, since Lastrum Pattern Storm Bolter sounds better then Lastrum Pattern Combi-Bolter) That is the reason why in current 40k you see traitors using only combi-bolters and loyalist models that come from the Horus Heresy using them as well
To be fair, the combi-bolter and storm bolter have some differences. The combi-bolter, as the name implies, are 2 bolters modded to combine and fire under one trigger. Due to this, it has some subtle differences. The first being the fire rate is strange as it doesn’t fire both barrels in sync in a way, one barrel will fire and the other will fire 2 milliseconds later, along with one trigger pull firing 5 or so bullets at once. Making it good for short range spray and pray. Also it requires 2 separate magazines to reload it. A storm bolter can be said to be a refined combi-bolter, as it is built as one weapon and not the combination of 2. Due to this, they are more accurate to an extent as the gun fires in sync, allowing the operator to use it more effectively and conserve ammo. Along with the fact it uses one magazine. Which is why many loyalist terminators will prefer the storm bolter as you won’t have to reload as often when compared to a combi-bolter.
I thought that combi-bolter were just bolter with any other weapon attached. It’s just that the other weapon attached to the bolter can sometimes be another bolter or bolt pistol, etc. Two bolter alternating fire in sequence might actually preserve ammo as not many things require two simultaneous bolt rounds to put down. The two bolters also might not burn through their ammo as fast as the storm bolter given that storm bolters are said to have a fast firing rate compared to a normal bolter even without factoring in the fact that two rounds are expended each time that the weapon fires. TLDR: Two separate bolters may actually last longer and be more ammo-efficient than a storm bolter(provided they have the same sized magazines), and the term combi-bolter has been used to refer to any bolter with some other gun strapped or otherwise attached to it.
@@clinicalcrimson1432 Ehh, I still believe the storm bolter is better at conserving ammo as like I said before, the combi-bolter isn’t consistent with every trigger pull. So one trigger pull can fire like 5 bolts if I remember correctly. Also we have to consider that the marines aren’t usually going full auto most of the time like our IRL military, so they’ll most likely be firing in semi automatic fire.
13:20 - Unless you're Commissar Yarick, because the Orks believe Yarick can use whatever the heck he wants, with one hand no less, or Sly Marbo because he wanted to carry his own version of a Derringer.
I absolutely love how the Ultramarine at the 33 minute mark has named his bolter Ultra. His Ultrabolter to go with his Ultrasword while traveling on his Ultraship. This is fact and nobody can convince me otherwise.
8:30, some reasons why people don't like the SCAR-H are that it tends to misfeed/fail to eject brass often, the standard barrel is long as shit so you wouldn't really want to clear a house with it, and the charging handle being that far forward. If you hold the rifle by the magazine well instead of a gangster grip or a smaller foregrip your thumb is probably gonna get smacked by it. Plus with it being a 7.62 caliber, that larger ammo caliber (from 5.56) adds weight to it fast and yes I know the H in SCAR-H stands for heavy.
Early vid so maybe you cover it later but don’t forget that pre heresy bolt shells were not designed to fight power armor but now the imperium and chaos has rounds specific to killing marines. The traitors secretly developed a new standard round that was better at penetration on armoires targets. This is why early Horus heresy battles often were heavily in favor of traitor forces
If you could relate the Boltgun to a real life brutal gun. It would be like shooting a full automatic shotgun running 4 gauge slugs. That or a full auto M32 grenade Launcher shooting armor penetrating rounds that have impact detonation cores with TNT.
The real reason we primarily use M4s and other AR-15 variants over the SCAR is that the AR is just a more modular platform. Also because until recently it had a reciprocating charging handle and those suck.
On the Hellfire round: the acid works on the physical from of the target, rather than its specific makeup. As long as theres squishy bits inside, the acid can work. The Nids COULD evolve slmerhinf that doesnt need those but it would make a terrible combat bioform
At thirty rounds per magazine, how many bolt gun magazines does a space marine carry as his base loadout for deployment? And how does he go about resupplying his ammo?
I would like to remind everyone that the imperial navy uses megabolters who’s ammunition fires rounds with a 1km blast radius and it’s supposed to be an anti starfighter weapon. Granted space is really big so you need to cover a lot of ground with a lot of explosions. Also if I’m not mistaken the Vulkan megabolters fire 150mm shells if they’re literally “larger than a human skull” but I take that with a grain of salt.
Bricky got A LOT things wrong about bolt construction. Deuterium core is not a weight. It's a micro-nuke. Very very small nuclear charge. Kraken bolts are not for killing tanks. They're for killing things in heavy nut not power armour like Tempestus Scions, Eldar Aspect Warriors, Necron Warriors and so on. Krakens also have longer range.
Actually, the AK is highly susceptible to mud and dirt tests, particularly compared to the AR platform which is far less open. Just look up InRangeTV Mud Tests. Though unsurprisingly it is far more resistant to freezing over. Look up Garand Thumb Freezing Rifle Test. Also, of note the old lore makes no god damn sense because Deuterium is a form of Hydrogen which could be used for Fusion, and it is not radioactive so could not be "Depleted", so it is neither Dense or even Solid. So, the fact that it has a "Depleted Deuterium Core" means it's effectively a large Hollow Point, which is likely far less explosive than some other option.
Space marines say prayers every time they reload and sometimes before every shot they take... Apperently Grimaldus had to retrain an entire company to reduce reload times because they were saying too long prayers
Honestly, the Bolter seems like it was designed to fight Orks. Low armour, high meat-HP, designed to deal maximum trauma per shot.. Let's face it, overkill against humans. You'd just give astartes a really big lasgun if that was it. I wouldn't be surprised if the Emperor looked at the various common races and decided Orks were the most common and toughest target out there. Bolter shell is overkill on Eldar and a fair few minor xenos too. So the Bolter was a good middle-ground between maximum destruction and efficiency, balanced against what he perceived would be the most resilient foe his armies would commonly face. If they came across super-armored targets they could switch to Volkite and lascannons and such.. but Bolter would work 9/10 times.
If you fire a bullrt into most military grade explosives, it just breaks them, not explode. Military spend a lot of time and money on RnD making sure their explosives only explode with a proper detonator.
Depleted deuterium is the dumbest concept in 40k lol. That's just an isotope of hydrogen, which (so far) doesn't solidify at any temperature. Depleted would imply it's been used in a nuclear fission or fusion reaction. Assuming metastable metallic hydrogen (theoretical, no real substantiation yet) it's still going to be super light/low density compared to typical metals or other elemental metals like osmium, tungsten, or uranium.
I know everyone talks about bolter rounds being huge like a mk 19 and I hate to be a party pooper but we do have .75 caliber weapons right now and have for well over 100 years, a 12 gauge shell is .75 caliber. And seeing that all the models and renders of bolt shells I've seen are straight walled cartridges they would not have the massive base and neck of a 50 bmg so while they might be longer than a 12 gauge shell a bolt shell probably isn't that massive. honestly a Saiga or an AA12 is probably a really good analog for a human bolter. Crap a shotgun shell might be a great example of what a bolt might look like with its ratio of powder to payload
I'll take some light hearted ribbing about most things, but I will not abide a single negative word towards the best tank of WW2! Also, we need a Bricky and DK range day, maybe a collab with Brandon Herrera?
I like both the SCAR and AR-15 equally, have an equal amount of different reasons for both. Of course the impact that ammunition is having on my bank account is not as great as it used to be, and I can only allow one hobby to control my finances XD
Doesn't the boltgun use gyrojet ammunition? What maintenance is there without all the fouling from undpent powder? In fact it should have significantly less recoil as well since it's not relying on the gasses from gunpowder to work a gas system. I shouldn't expect Brits to understand guns since their main service weapon was so horrible Germany couldn't fix it but still.
You guys need to get with Brandon Herrera and go play with some guns at his place in Texas. If he's willing to have Russian Badger down, you guys have a shot lol
The cal is just the diameter of the projectile so you can have a 50 cal but it all is dependent on the case itself to hold more powder. So a 50 BMG might be the same caliber as a 50 AE or a 50 bale wolf but they're not equal in power by any means 75 caliber is big but I think it's dramatized in the shows a little bit too much I have an old 577 Snyder that uses a 60 caliber round and it's not that much bigger than a 50 cal
People irl don't like the scar because it is expensive eats optics and has nothing that makes it worth those issues. Well larpers liked it because socom😂 but they get rid of them
They asked if they covered a book that mentioned different kinds of bolter ammunition and the answer is yes. In kingmaker, a character uses penetrators rounds and EMP rounds with his bolt pistol. In all the books I've read, no space marine has ever mentioned running out of ammo or having to conserve it. On the other hand, human characters run out of ammo all the time.
Yes you’re right the second time it is a m2 browning which fires a 50 cal the closest real life bullet to a bolter round. Also it is nicknamed Ma Deuce. Great video to start my day
@@Ashtor1337 .75 is .02 inches bigger than a Shotgun slug which is .73 calibre. Someone did the calculations, and .600 Nitro is the closest to the firepower of a Bolter if you're including the explosive.
@@acid2-128 .75 is .02 inches bigger than a shotgun slug at .73 calibre, so no. The firepower, according to calculations, should you include the explosive, is equal to .600 Nitro.
My favourite is the Infernus heavy bolter, in use by the Deathwatch. It's basically a heavy bolter with a heavy flamer. So a Heavy Combi bolter. absolutely ridiculous.
Scars aren’t overly expensive compared to a m4 and I saw some sf guys in Afghanistan with them. But the us military went with a 6.8mm round for new rifles and machine guns
In the grand Imperial tradition of naming things after their creator (Arkan Land and his Land Raider) this gun is named after it's inventor, Harold Bolter.
The Bolter recoil thing still agitates me. Self propelled ammunition has very negligible felt recoil, which is a large part of the point. A .75 rocket-propelled micromunition using just enough powder in a cartidge to leave what is, at most a 36in long barrel would feel like one sharp thump on the shoulder *at most* It wouldn't tear your arm outta the socket. Source? I've fired a full grain .75 Nitro out of a full length rifle. Yes it kicked my ass right outta my chair and bruised my collar bone, but I was completely fine and not dismembered. A super soldier in power armor should fire that thing like it was a water pistol.
Point of Metal Storm Frag Shells is that there's proximity detector in it so it explodes in to shrapnel few meters before the target kinda turning the bolter into a shotgun in a sense.
Metal storm bolts aren't firing frags since the main bolts already do have a frag effect. Most explosive rounds have a frag effect. Metal storm is more akin to 40mm canister shot, which is what happens if you replace a grenade round with a shotgun. I *think* it's flechette qnd not round shot, but I can't confirm. I know they're sometimes used as close anti-air because it fills the air with q cloud of nope.
The British also produced the Welrod, as close as we've come so far to an actual "silencer" as opposed to a suppressor. It's good for one shot, and that shot tears the baffles inside the bike-pump looking barrel attachment to pieces, so you can still fire a second time but it's going to be LOUD...
Fun fact, the US built a bolter back in WWII. It was called the Gyrojet pistol and shot rocket cartridges. It was the competition for the .45 as the US service pistol. Check it Out! Bricky there’s a history channel video on it that shows the exact mechanics of firing
"Mutagenic" means it's alive and mutates. Hellfire works better on tyranids because it constantly mutates to continue eating through their evolving armor
I was under the impression the adaptation required some thought and time on the queens part to make new units. Are they making niids magic now? That said I imagine it is rather frustrating when your enemy begins designing a perfect counter to you as you are fighting the less perfect versions and all you can do is wait for it to be build and delivered.
@@jacobfreeman5444 Nids have always been able to adapt individually to a certain extent. Its why they are completely immune to poison and bioweapons. Hellfire ammo was created for hivefleet Behemoth when Tyranids were created back in 3rd edition, so having individuals adapt to incoming damage has always been there
