I'm 53 yr old now and I can still see myself in my room as a young teenager dancing and singing this song. It still puts a big smile on my face. I love this song so much.
It was released in October of 1971 on the”Hot Wax”Record Label, not in 1972 as they say above about the song. It debuted on the Hot 100 on November 20th of 1971 and peaked at No.15 in January of 1972 with 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the third largest selling song the group- The Honey Cone had with it peaking at 15 and the songs Stick-Up & Want Ads as their top two hits and the only Gold Records by The Honey Cone!
A Supremes vs Honey Cone Battle?!!? You already know. These women were just Fine. Me and my Partners used to go up to Woolworths early in the morning just to stare at their album covers.
Producing and making a group like Diana Ross and the Supremes famous, takes a tremendous amount of money and the right marketing. I doubt if Honey Cone got one fifth of what DraTs did But these ladies here are truly a wondrous talent. 35 years later, and the record sounds better than the utter crap being released today , and the record still plays well today. That's talent A lesser sounding group in my opinion (Three Degrees) had greater success, but this one languished in obscurity. It had to be the bad marketing
I think they were overshadowed by the Supremes. It had to be tough competing with other female groups like, the Emotions, The Three Degrees, and Love Unlimited.
Ahhh, the days when Motown produced music with people who actually had talent. Back in the day, I would switch back and forth between Led Zeppelin to Marvin Gaye to The Raspberries to the girls with Honey Cone. I am telling you - the best music was produced in the late 60's ad early 70's.
Virginia Towerman Unfortunately, Motown missed the boat on this and other groups/artists. And I am so glad to see someone as eclectic with their music as I am.
Virginia Towerman Couldn't agree with you more. We also had such a wide variety of Great Groups /Solo Artist to choose from back then too. The music sounded so much better with REAL instruments then.
I'm surprised by the comments that most people here don't know these ladies. From left to right are Shelly Clark, Edna Wright and Carolyn Willis. Shelly once performed for the Ikettes. Edna was a sometime member of The Blossoms and Carolyn was a sometime member of Bobb E. Sox and The Blue Jeans. Both being part of dealings with Phil Spector. On his Christmas album, Carolyn is the lady on the far left and she was featured on Seals & Crofts "Get Closer". As far as Edna Wright's blonde "hair", she has worn that color most of her life. For my money, Edna is way more talented than her sister Darlene Love, way more. At least Edna was a lead singer.
Why are you surprised? They weren't big stars and they weren't around that long. Many people weren't even born yet, and if they were they were just kids at the time. I heard their one or two songs on the radio, but never knew who it was that performed them. I was a teen ager at the time
With the right management and promotion these ladies could have rivaled The Supremes. Edna had an incredible singing voice. I hope she still does. I can think of numerous groups, male and female, who had the vocal chops and style to have made it big. They simply weren't properly promoted and marketed. Still love this group anyway. Edna can sing for me any day.
BroccoliBeefed Like huh? Many people weren't even born then? Huh? "I was a teen ager at the time" - well that explains everything to me. They were stars for a long while, independently of each other, in the early 60's. They performed, even if you didn't notice, on the Sonny and Cher Show, Soul Train and a host of others. They were employed by Holland-Dozier-Holland of Motown fame and that alone makes them big stars. Geez, I was picking up hay bales in the the middle of nowhere Montana back then and I even knew who they were back then.
I am 73 now and still boppin to this jam. When i first heard this in 1968 i knew it was a hit. I gotta go back to dancing now. See ya...dont you realize your backbone is me....yayyy
Yes! You can also see her in the award -winning documentary ' 20 Feet from Stardom". It features Darlene and Darlene and Edna are breaking down their early days and how they got started. Edna also did background for Sonny and Cher and so many others.
Both Darlene and Edna sang on some of “Spill Flexter” songs with Sonny and Cher. Sonny also was Spector’s percussionist and gofer. Sonnys first song was written for Sam Cooke. “Things you do to me.”
