It’s possible to be so distraught and to off yourself in a painful way like this. I have an aunt who, when she was 16, was having an affair with a married man (this was Cuba in the 1960s, yes it’s wrong) and was deeply in love with him but when he told her he wouldn’t leave his wife for her, she completely doused herself with (rubbing) alcohol and set herself on fire. She died a couple of days later in the hospital in horrible agony.

@Chris Wilson you are totally correct. People have the misconception that evidence to secure an arrest is the same as evidence used to secure a conviction. It’s the job of the prosecutor to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that all these coincidences aren’t just that. Prosecuting or defending a suspect is not just proving facts regardless of how logical it is. It’s telling a story to the jury and providing enough doubt to swing either direction. The burden of prosecution relies on the rules the judge has put in place for a conviction. That’s why there are usually multiple counts and charges. It’s very complicated and the whole criminal court proceeding is not the same or easy like traffic court. Where your dashcam records the reflection of your signal light flashing off the bumper of the vehicle in front of you can get you cleared of a failure to use you signal while turning. Just getting an arrest warrant sometimes require a bunch of actual hard evidence and not a bunch of circumstantial evidence. Now the circumstantial evidence can get you picked up for questioning, and from the questioning, you can get enough for an arrest to proceed with further investigation. The whole system is very complicated and not so clean cut and dry. Which is good both ways but sometimes bad, depending on which side of the courtroom you’re sitting on. That’s why investigators, detectives, lawyers and all that should be allowed to do their thing while civilians just watch at home and not try to play lawyer with a law degree from RU-vid University and a PHD from Netflix. Also since he wasn’t convicted for the other murder, the judge could’ve explicitly said that the case in Louisiana can not be brought up because that would cause bias and that would out weigh anything else.

It reminds me of the climax of ``Last Of the Mohicans'' where Hawkeye has to shoot his friends, who are being burned at the stake. He has to make perfect shots from a distance to put them out of their misery. He and Chingachook. This girl didn't have a friend like that. Even in tales of some of the 17th-century burnings at the stake, someone would throw a rock or something at the head of the person being burned, to euthanize them.

The first 2 minutes are the worst but once her nerve endings had been burnt she wouldn't have felt a thing. Still a horrific way to die but she wouldn't have felt pain for most of the time she was on fire.

I think they were putting race in front of logic. I get that there has been blacks or other minorities that had it rough, or the system just was not fair to them. They may grow to distrust the system. However, when you are selected as a jury, you have to put your prejudices aside, and let the facts speak. You can't just let people get away with shit because they are your race, beliefs or may have had similar experiences as you.

It was a terrible thing to deal with. I was in EMS/FIRE back in 2010-2012, but I ended up leaving because it just wasn't for me. It was my dream job since I was a kid, but it wasn't so dreamy when I got there. I saw some brutal things that have stayed with me ever since and I don't think I'll ever forget them. People often criticize Firefighters, Paramedics and Police Officers for being insensitive or callous, but they just don't understand that you've gotta be like that or you will NOT make it long, just like me. When I first started, I remember my Supervisor telling me "If you don't laugh, then I promise you'll cry yourself to sleep." ..He was 10000% correct and I had many sleepless nights when I was in that profession. My first job was with a company that did BLS Transports(Basic Life Support), until I got a job at a Fire Department. I was at the Transport company for 6 months and even that was brutal. The worst thing was transporting Neonatal babies/patients. They were just so little and it just broke your heart. The 2nd worst thing was transporting psychiatric patients from the Children's Hospital to a hospital that could provide more adequate care and the 3rd worst thing was transporting patients with dementia. And none of that was nothing compared the stuff I saw when I got on at the Fire Department and worked the ACLS Rescue Apparatus. You never forget incidents that involve children, those haunt you forever. You also never forget some of the smells. I don't want to go into details, but it is rough. I appreciate all of the men and women who wake up and voluntarily do the job, so that people like me don't have too. I sure wish that I could've touched it out and I often feel like I'm weak, but I just couldn't continue doing it anymore. It was just affecting me too much..

I used to be that way when I was younger but that changed after working in the field for several years. I used to work 48 and 72 hour shifts and I'll never forget the anxiety you feel when anticipating that next really bad call. You are always wondering, "Is it going to be a child this time or a homicide or both." I remember the area I used to work in, we had a family where we used to get frequent calls at the home for one particular family member in that household. There were about 8 to 10 family members living in that home. The guy we used to frequently pick up had drug issues but I remember him as basically a sweet, good-hearted person with a bad monkey on his back(drugs). After I left EMS for good, I found out their house burned down and killed everyone in it. People that I knew from dispatch said that some of my former co-workers refuse to talk about it to this day and several had to go into counseling. Also, something else I observed, the callousness that makes one successful in this field usually wreaks havoc in their personal lives. Divorce, drug/alcohol abuse, and infidelity are rampant in this field. I'm glad I left when I did.

When I got to the hospital he had to be transferred to another hospital 45 min away due to medical insurance. EMS stayed with him the whole time & they told me to drive with them to the next hospital. Once we got the the hospital, the nurses were rude as well. The one EMS guy called my boyfriend a month later to see how he was doing. People don’t realise what a hectic job the EMS have. Some of the scenes they must step onto. Crazy. I thank them as often as I can. They do some of the most important & impressive work.

Third and fourth degree burns are mostly painless, as the nerves have been destroyed. She was no doubt terrified, but between the ravaged nerves, shock, and adrenaline, I doubt she felt much in the way of pain.

To be fair, though I don't /necessarily/ think that Quinton was innocent myself, jury verdicts aren't so easily made. A jury has to sit through hours of evidence and counter-evidence, as well as plenty of outright rhetoric from each side, and juries are given a strong emphasis on the idea that they should only convict Quinton if they're *very* sure that there is no other person who could have committed the crime. Without watching the trial myself, I can come up with plenty of devil's advocate arguments. For example, Mike (who don't get me wrong, does a good job) glosses over the claims surrounding Deric quite quickly, but the defence could have given quite a lot more emphasis to this than this video suggests. Wrongfully or not, the defence could have built up a more convincing argument for the possibility of his involvement that we get to see here. The police did say they cleared him through multiple interviews, but was there a lot of evidence to back that up? Mike would usually state such things (e.g instead of saying the police cleared him through interviews, Mike might have said that Deric was cleared because cellphone data showed that he was at his own home at the time, if the police did indeed have such evidence). The way that Jessica named this person throws so many questions into the mix, because there would be no reason for her to lie about this. The prosecution say that her injuries may have made her make a sound similar to Eric when trying to say Telis, but don't the two names sound very different? was all of her speech nearly unintelligible, which would support that theory? Because if not (which seems to be the case from what I've seen here) then the only word that she could say properly being her killer's name would have been so unusable by the defence we wouldn't be speaking about it. Maybe the guy who found Jessica struggled to hear properly, but the other witness said he heard something very similar, so it's not likely to be that. It's also kind of weird that she either only gave a first name or a surname - and did the two witnesses truly not push her further for a full name? Not that I don't think they're giving the full story, but there's something odd about that. Now all of the data that /does/ suggest Quinton is the killer is quite compelling, but remember again that he is being tried for murder, and can should only be convicted if the jury really see no other suspect. Firstly, from what I half-remember from Serial's coverage of Adnan Syed, there are sometimes issues with the way that mobile phones process location data, which the defence could have used. Glossing over that, because I don't remember enough of it to make that solidly, we also have to think about Quinton's personality. He is, for lack of a better word, a bit of a 'gangbanger', and as was put to light in this video, buys into the whole "snitches get stitches" routine, and probably wouldn't snitch if his own life depended on it. What's to say that it was only Quinton and Jessica were in that car? Perhaps someone else was also there? It would have made a lot of the details fit a lot more if Jessica's killer had a helping hand - for example, if she's a fighter as the guy who found her describes (though admittedly more rhetorical, point could still stand), why did Quinton not have any wounds from when he was trying to choke her? It makes sense that, if Jessica was so badly burned, no evidence was collected from under her nails, but is there still not the possibility that she scratched or hit at her murderer? If not, then possibly there was a second person holding her down. Then if that's the case, maybe it was the second person who murdered her, and Quinton is just an accomplice to the murder, but still innocent of the crime of actual murder? Also, there's plenty of other reasons, other than a reasonable defence, that a jury would have been fairly reluctant to pass out a guilty verdict. For example, just as my own observation, it seems to me from all of the news footage and the people involved in the story like this town had a fairly large African-American population. It's important to consider as well how racial tensions could play into this. It's not unusual for African-American jury members to be more lenient on African-American suspects, because of the deep mistrust they typical hold for the police. It's possible that the hung jury could have stemmed from African-American jury members being sceptical of the justice system as a whole (see the OJ trial). Anyway that's enough rambling from me. Point is, these videos are fun, but things are very, very different when you're in the hot-seat. Naturally, you would have spent days, if not weeks, being appealed to in many different ways, and there would be a heavy weight on your shoulders, knowing what the consequences of making the wrong decision. When you're in that kind of position, for better or for worse, you're probably going to be scrutinising every little detail much more closely. And it's exactly when you do that when things become a lot more sticky. Whatever the case, if the juries spent hours arguing their cases, and whichever minority group was left didn't just throw in the towel with exhaustion and with the feeling of just wanting the trial to be over, then that means that someone on those juries was very passionate about their case.

L H there wasn’t a guy at the scene. The first responders thought she was a guy standing there beside the car until they got closer and realized it was a woman who was badly burned (no hair or clothes).

Please google the percentage of hung juries in murder cases. 1 hung jury is rare. 2? Extraordinarily rare. Basically the ONLY reason he hasn’t been convicted is because of what the first responders say that Jessica said when they first got there. Which I just can’t understand. The poor girls mouth, throat and lungs were heavily burned and it’s extremely unlikely that she could’ve even formed words correctly. It’s so incredibly sad.

Jessica never had strong support or a healthy upbringing. That corridor is saturated with drugs. She stayed sometimes with her mother but mostly stayed at the home of an older, unrelated female that was a better friend to Jessica than either of her parents. Kind of like an auntie/neice relationship, in my view.

Oh shit I didn't even think about that, a real life horror movie scene except she wasn't the monster,alien,evil or possessed murderer who just won't die, Sadly she was the helpless victim struggling to hold on to tell someone the vital information only she has, after being burned alive over her entire body making her un-recognizable she stood tall, naked, burnt,& blinded but not silenced. So as her body was screaming in pain shuting down, it was her will, & that alone that kept her going past the possible. Pushed farther than the human body is capable and became a true hero.

Work in EMS and you will see horrors. It's part of the nature of the job. I once had to help pull a February suicide out of his closed car in early July, got called to the gunshot head wound of someone I knew, dealt firsthand with the bloody results of drunk driving, and had patients literally die under my hands. And of course I've heard stories from older hands who had seen even worse scenes -- plane crashes, industrial accidents, explosions. It's one thing to comfort, even entertain, a kid with a broken leg on the way to the hospital. Sit there with him, monitor, tell him a joke or two to get him laughing and you've done some good. It's the times when things have gone past anything you can hope to remedy that the nightmares begin.

I’ve been pressured, I was interrogated about something I didn’t do, they tried to make me believe that if I said things it would be in my advantage and I would get off easily. I never did, I had nothing to do with that and all I told was the truth. It did get sorted out eventually. I understand that much tougher situations may happen

I did 2 tours in Afghanistan and I did route clearance and seen some messed out things from being over there and when I wasn't on mission sometimes I'd help on the TARMAC if hellocopters land and escort injuried ppl and I remember a solider who got medavac'd and he was burnt and the struggle and the look he had in has face I'll always remember, I can't imagine being burnt alive and not being able to speak and his eyes screamed for help but all I could do was help carry him.

I volunteered with the local FD for 9 years. I coped well with most of it, but my day job was at a jail, and god help any DWI suspect who tried to whine to me. The worst one was when I was up from 2 AM to 6 AM, and a couple hours later I'm at work and he sniveled to me about his right to drink. The deputy was rolling on the floor.

A drunk driver pulled out in from me while I was on my bike..13 fractured bones, collapses lung and severe concussion. I had to walk nearly 1/2 mile in that condition to get help. I fractured 6 ribs and my shoulder blade, which was the most painful thing I've ever experienced. So, good on you for giving them hell, lol..

However, the Firefighter witnessing in the video said that she had mostly 2nd and 1st degree burns. I hope he was wrong! If he was correct, then she would have been in unbearable pain. I had a patient with 3rd degree burns over 80% of his body. he couldn't feel any pain.
