It caught my imagination and I have studied the ins and outs of mudlarking. I have followed Nicola for a while and she is wonderful. She gets so excited about her finds and does research on each little thing. It puts everything into context and she brings her audience into her passion. Thanks for such a stellar channel. It’s one of my favorites and I always look forward to new episodes.

That was such a good comeback about the Mississippi River. We sure asked for it. People, not getting their name back, they are not reported missing, no one notices, the cops don’t take the disappearance seriously, whatever the reason, it makes me very sad. I think being given their name back takes them from being curiosities and weaves them back into the the tapestry, it makes them fully part of us again.

Yourself concisely, comprehensively and elegantly resurrecting some long past, grim true tales: Nicola bringing life and social storytelling, to dormant mysteries, concealed beneath the Thames silt, muck and wash. A superb match.

What I found especially interesting is that this is not the only series of torso murders. On the other side of the pond, there was a series of cases collectively referred to as the Cleveland Torso Murders. They took place in Cleveland, Ohio. The killer was referred to as the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. As in the Thames cases, the killer has never been identified.

Unfortunately I remember the case of a young boys torso being found in the Thames much more recently. I remember being horrified that people weren’t immediately saying “Well this missing child is that age, it must be them” and realised how easy it can be for people to get away with such things because no one even knows they are meant to be looking.

@@akelly4207 people get called out for being nosy or a busybody, but ya know what? Nosy busybodies would have seen a little boy suddenly show up, not go to school, not play with other kids in the neighborhood, then suddenly disappear! They then would see on the news the horrible murder and tell the police, anonymously, the address of their neighbors’s house and hopefully the police could find evidence before it was cleaned up. So many people failed that little boy. Evil wins when decent people do nothing or not pay attention. Busybodies save lives! Surely someone had to see him, right? I wish someone spoke up. 😢

So interesting (!!!) with the "mudlarking" hobby, cause this is a very old "occupation" indeed. I know from I think it was either in the "Worst jobs in History", from the Victorian era, or about the building of the sewers in London that eradicated the Typhoid fever from wells with polluted groundwaters from cesspits and such, after The Great Stink parliment. Where the tunnels from the sewers exited downstream past the city, various people had something like a day-job from finding coins and such between the brick-stones far down said tunnels. But it was criminalized at some point.
