Finns advice really rings true. I always believed I needed a cool chick that took music as seriously as I do. On my first date with my now wife I nervously asked her who her favorite band was. She said “I can’t remember what they are called.” We’ve been very happily married for 5 years. Turns out a little balance in a relationship is a good thing.
The best marriages challenge you, in healthy ways. ... And nothing challenges me more than the 5,000th Taylor Swift track, and I'm a damn Swiftie myself.
@@MattyV001 ouch. I don't mind most Disney stuff musically (Mulan + Goofy Movie soundtracks are fire) but the constant interjections of dialogue nowadays drive me up the wall.
In 2007 I decided that the woman I would marry would be into the Deftones, and in 2012 I met her. At the time, she was a college dropout. We've since been married for ten years, and she got a degree in Microbiology and works as a research scientist. Lots of tats, often compared to that NCIS lab goth. So the cost/ride calculus worked out.
Well done. Out of all the descriptions offered here, “Deftones girl” objectively sounds the most appealing to me by far. And that’s what I’ve had for over 5 years.
@@rachelwebsitewizard my son thought my white pony hat was a mustang reference. He's super into cars and I am decidedly not. But I'm fairly certain it's the coolest thing about me in his eyes so I never corrected the assumption. It's been 9 years and he doesn't suspect a thing!
“Make sure she doesn’t like anything that you like. If she likes the same things you like, she’s probably crazy.” That’s the advice 20 (and 30…) year-old me needed. The woman who messed me up most/most recently put on a Tool album the first time we hooked up. AND SHE HAD A PET POSSUM.
I once had a coworker back in college who was like “oh you like Green Day too?” while I was playing music in the kitchen (we worked at a BBQ restaurant) and since that’s my favorite band, I was already kind of curious about her. I mean, she was definitely cute, but hearing her say that and naming a somewhat obscure song of theirs as her favorite (Whatsername) definitely caught my attention. Long, complicated story short: we eventually started hooking up, but then it got really fucking messy emotionally and ended on very bad terms. She winded up breaking my heart. She was also a total nutcase.
I feel like with these types of videos I get a real lesson on American culture from Finn. Vacations at "the lake", "military wives music". All absolutely fascinating.
It’s especially resonant with California. Anytime he brings up “the river”, he’s talking about (I assume) the Havasu / Laughlin area. In Southern California, you either go to the desert to ride dirt bikes or the river to go boating. It’s like this dude has known me my whole life 😂
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one. I came here in these comments for this. When he covered it, I literally laughed and cried and had to turn away from the screen because I was personally attacked. 😭
I think people overvalue having a partner who likes the same things you do. My wife’s taste in music and movies is pretty much exactly opposite of mine (though we have some overlap). It’s way more important that you’re with someone who shares the same values as you.
Same here. And over time we’ve come to find similar entertainment products we both enjoy which is cool If you’re basing an entire relationship on your preference in entertainment you’re in for a bad time imo
I was just thinking this. To be fair, my bf and I do have a lot of similar tastes, but we also have a lot of areas where we differ. I went out to a goth event the other night and I got all dressed up and danced, and my bf went somewhere else with his friends as the goth thing is absolutely not his scene. I left the event thinking that I really love and appreciate him for just being himself. For not going to these events with me and trying to fit in or force anything that just isn't true to himself. I really like that we can have some interests that are so different and it allows us to have lives outside of our relationship.
100% agree. Up until I met my wife I had been a gigging guitarist in mostly post hardcore/prog metal/metal core bands for 15ish years. We are polar opposites with our music tastes, although there is overlap. Movies and art we agree on mostly. The one thing that has been integral to our marital success has been shared values. She may hate Meshuggah. I may hate Billy Eilish, but we both agree on the values we are instilling in our children. So yeah, shared values are really important. That and having a killer sex life.😊
I think it's still fairly important when you're younger, since you're probably more active and actually engaging in hobbies/interests. Flying solo kinda sucks when you're younger. Plus your values might not really be set in stone yet anyway. Then you get older, you aren't going out to concerts/art exhibitions/whatever as much anymore, hell you might even have kids. That's when values and beliefs become more important than "we both like band X".
this 100%. My wife developed a certain taste to metal because I listen to it a lot, but more like she tolerates things than like them (besides BMTH and Metallica that she loves lol).
Thank you for the educational content! I had an alt/indie rock GF at one point, who knew way too much about obscure 90s British Indie-rock, had a bob cut with bangs she gave herself during one of her weekly meltdowns, and let me tell you, that relationship ended with her threatening to kill me with a kitchen knife because I tried to break up with her due to her split personality disorder… I blame obscure 90s British Indie rock.
It’s 2092. A beautiful woman is by the poolside wearing a Nirvana t-shirt and a bikini bottom. A young man nearby is playing “Lithium” on an acoustic guitar when she catches his eye. The young man compliments her on her outfit. She says “thanks, I love this clothing brand. By the way, what song is that?”
My gf only liked All Time Low, Oingo Boingo, and AFI’s “bunny album”. She vacationed with her parents at the river. This against my horror punk, darkwave, and metalcore / skateboarding background. We’re getting married in October. Listen to Finn, he’s in the knowS
Horse girl categories: Equestrienne (rides and handle horses on some top tier level), farm girl (actually uses horses on the farm for farm stuff) and plain horse girls (likes horses and has a horse to ride occasionally but mostly just shovels money on upkeep). I would not worry about the first two but I´ve encountered several of the last one and whats seems to connect them all is financial problems and they will gladly lasso you down that moneypit with them if you are not careefull.
I dated the Deftones girl for a year and some change, and I'm still picking up the pieces a year later. Finn was right lol now I've leveled up to the Flyleaf girl and a year into it, I couldn't be happier. Finn was right again!!
Your videos are sometimes practically a standup routine. I feel like you are telling truths that would be too rough without the jokes and sense of humor in your attitude - Finn McKenty - Stand-Up RU-vidr!
Whoever said "Lana Del Ray girl will ruin your life and have you writing songs about her 10 years later while she's in law school" must be spying on me.
My wife only listen to pop, country and folk. She gets anxious everytime someone screems on a song, she can only tolerate rock/punk without screems. That's fine, we can find common ground, but when I drive alone I always turn the music up to some lorna or spiritbox in hiding ahah.
When I met my fiancé I was shocked to hear she had never listened to a full album before. Didn’t even realize how much of a green flag that was at the time Finn is correct. Get yourself a normie girl
Not listening to whole albums? Then how does one understand concept albums? Jk, I have listened to Downward Spiral all the way through, but I'm not listening for a message, usually the music.
Should’ve had kittie, white zombie, coal chamber, otep, lacuna coil, Evenessence, the birthday massacre and many more because I’m sure girls who are fans of those bands want to be basically like the one female bassist, the female singer, or everyone (kittie)
I was merried twice, once with a girl I met at the show, once with a girl I met at a normie friends gathering. Guess which marriage is still going on strong
I wonder what category I would be as a girl who listen to Bad Omens and BMTH as well as Lana Del Ray, but also In flames and most of the rockbands from 60s and 70s😅
I hope you like Fleetwood Mac and the stones. I did not expect someone from (possibly) from the 80/90's to like music from 60/70's, good on you 👍🏻. About this video, I've just started to watch it and I am feeling uncomfortable and some what, sexist. He's a guy assuming which band (hot!?) Women listens to.
@@alexlief2072 Yes I like Fleerwood but they are a little to much pop for my taste. Rolling Stones, The Doors, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple are more my cup of tea :) I'm 90s kid rised by gen X/boomer parents so maybe thats why😅
I had alternative girlfriends all through my teens and early 20s and they where mostly like the alkaline trio girls mentioned here. Then I met my wife in my mid 20s who is a wholesome normie and we've been together for 8 years with 2 kids lol
One of my exes when we first started talking asked what music i was into on AIM. I said hardcore and metalcore. She was like "oh like Yellowcard?" I just stared at my computer in total confusion.
That Megan Thee Stallion take gave me a harsh flashback to my ex girlfriend being unnecessarily mean to me. That's what I'm talking about man, keep it up!!
or just anyone who thinks dogs are literally angels sent from God above... you know the people who have the "who rescued who" paw sticker. watch out they will demonize you if you don't love dogs as much as they do
Deftones were responsible for the conception of a lot of millenials and zoomers. Deftones are probably one of the only bands from the "nu metal" era that will live on forever. Maybe, Korn too.
I once dated a girl based on our similar weird not normie music taste, and at the time i thought i found a soulmate, but it tuned out most toxic relationship ive even been in and i was constantly humiliated lol well that was a lesson learned the hard way
Met a woman who looked like a wholesome church girl, loved most of the same bands, movies, etc, but was so incredibly toxic. Did some damage, and all the signs had been there beneath the superficial stuff.
Just got back from a Red State Rock Festival (Sonic Temple), and there were more girls in Deftones shirts than any other band the day that they played. I think the women who love that band are like the guys though, and there needs to be discussion on horny nerds from both sides of the aisle!
About 4 months ago a big Fall Out Boy, twenty one pilots, All Time Low fan started hanging out in my main friend group. I thought "cool an alt girl to talk music with." Long story short, that friend group no longer exists.
Doing dishes and listening. When I hear horse girl my mind saw it as Horus (god) girl, saw the pale chick with eye of Ra eyeliner, black hair, bangs and a purple streak. Fun for a bit... be prepared to help her polish tarnish out of Ankh rings.
My ex was INTO INTO Hollywood Undead, Alkaline Trio, and Nirvana. But also Megan thee Stallion and Drake...And she owned 9 cats...I didn't know what I was into until it was too late. Claimed to have Abandonedment issues and then cheated on me, then she swam away in her sea of McDonald's garbage.
I'll just risk it and take the Deftones girl. The Flyleaf girl probably will mention her "deftones phase" after your second kid anyway... "hihi there was a time where I fell in love with all the boys and did all kinds of crazy sex things... but that's not me anymore, I'm happy i found you as the dad of my soon to be 7 kids, who just likes sex as god meant it (once per 3 months missionary with the lights out).."
Hahaha my ex gf back in 05-06 her favorite band was fallout boy, she worked at All-State insurance and had several Roxy shirts. I also took her snowboarding a few times. Of course she left me for a marine. I assume she loves 5 finger theses days...
Really?. Because I would think a girl who likes Evanescence is shy, has low self esteem, doesn’t get out much, has depression, but is easy to talk to and can be chill.
just attended the all time low and mayday parade concert in SLC... can confirm, more chicks there than all the concerts ive been to in my life...definitely different vibe than the devil wears prada ABR show....
@@gamerbabyy yeah they headlined it. It's definitely their popular mainstream stuff. Mostly things from the last two cds. But they put on a good show and sound great.
@BigOwl51. No, people that listen to Imagine Dragons are the same people that listen to Coldplay and Foo Fighters, they are 45 year old Male Geography teachers. Gym bros listen to Five Finger Death Punch and Pantera, while they talk to you about what year they served in Iraq, what their prison tattoos mean, and how many strippers they’ve dated.
This is funny to me cause a guy at work complimented my Lamb of God shirt and i told him i waa going to Vegas (sick new world) to see System of a Down. He almost fell to his knees cause he was so jealous. He said he wish he could do the same but his wife isnt supportive of his love for rock music. I felt bad for him. Im gonna keep being me!
The pets part was spot on lol. I feel like there’s a butt rock fan having farm animals too…. I see it. And I don’t mean living in the country either. These girls will love Breaking Benjamin with a pet goat in their condo
the level of detail and accuracy with the alkaline trio girl is insane *dates for two months, breaks up, shows up at your door at midnight 5yrs later cuted up with a bottle like nothing happened🥰* 😵💫 my labels are hollywood undead/fallout boy lol
Geezus as a woman I was laughing most of the time listening to this... and when I wasnt laughing I had a serious "WTF" face. I hate dancing... love heavy music... and any guy who cant deal with that is better off staying away from me 😂 though Im older so most of the bands meant nothing to me... what does it mean when a girl loves Metallica, Slayer, Slipknot and Lorna Shore? (Among others).... but yeah this was just the misic verion of the "crazy-hot index" so good for a laugh
@@fattmusiek5452 Bro she actually knew every obscure song and fact about these bands. I should probably call her huh.. Catch up. I hope she's doing well.. Nasty lil girl. Easily my favorite ex.
