To be fair to Haymitch, year after year since winning his own hunger games, he’s seen everyone he’s supposed to help win, die. He’s jaded and scarred.

She missed the first shot for her rating bc in the book Katniss uses a homemade bow and arrows. When using a brand new fancy bow she had to adjust how she should aim and use it :) little detail I love about this movie.

I’m not sure if it will be explained in the movies but “Panem” comes from “Panemetcircenses” meaning bread and circuses. This can further be elaborated through a Cicero quote “The evil was not in bread and circuses, per se, but in the willingness of the people to sell their rights as free men for full bellies and the excitement of the games which would serve to distract them from the other human hungers which bread and circuses can never appease.”

In response to your question asking why the "reap" children I think it is really to keep the adults in line. The adults 95% of the time are the ones that can physically and mentally do something about their situations, like starting a revolution. What better way to keep them in line than to threaten and use their children. Fear keeps people in line and takes away hope.

District 12 corresponds roughly to the coal mining areas of the country such as West Virgina and Kentucky. The capitol is somewhere around Colorado I believe. In the books, the creatures they fight near the end are genetically engineered from the victims that died during the games and had their actual faces which added a level of horror to them.

The scene with Seneca locked into a room with a crystal bowl of berries: yes, he was expected to kill himself. He was locked in with no escape. He had 'failed' the government. In this case, if he didn't take his own life, he would have been most likely tortured and killed. At least he can go with some dignity for whatever family he has left. And punishing families and friends is a key strategy by this government to hold people 'in their place'.

Those dogs were really scary in the book. The dogs had every dead tributes eyes, I don't remember if even the dog's faces were supposed to resemble all the other tributes.

Haymitch turned to alcohol to deal with his PTSD. He won his hunger games so he now has to mentor 2 tributes every year. District 12 is the poorest so they tend to die of starvation. They also don’t have the strength to fight or survive in the games. So every year Haymitch has to watch 2 kids from his district be murdered and there’s nothing he can do about it. Katniss can hunt and that’s the only reason her family hasn’t starved to death.

The pin being cursed is a long-standing fan theory. The original owner was Heymitch's district partner, Maisilee who was also Katniss's mum's best friend. After her death, it was returned to her family where it was eventually handed down to her niece who is Kaniss's friend, in the book she gives Katniss the pin who as you see in the movie gives it to Prim whose name is called in the reaping.

Yes, the districts (mostly) are starving and poor, district 12 and 11 being the poorest. Each district specializes in something and supplies resources to the Capitol:

Actually, the mockingjay pin did protect her. Not only did her sister take her place, but her sister actually won and came back to her. So I'd say that's a win.

Haymitch didn't live in the capitol. Victor's have a special section in their districts called the Victor's village.

I so enjoy seeing people experience these movies for the first time, and I have so much love for this franchise. You did a pretty good job understanding the basic gist of it, but of course the books are a lot more detailed, etc. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
