I have to come and defend Peeta!! The whole point of the trilogy and of the love triangle is that Gale represents violence and endless war, and Peeta represents hope and peace. Katniss and Gale aren't right for each other after The Games - Katniss has been thoroughly traumatized by her experiences, Gale has gotten too caught up in revenge and war to recognize its' cost. Peeta never intentionally killed anyone in cold blood; Gale continually ordered the deaths of dozens if not hundreds of soldiers and civilians. Katniss learns the horrors of war and Gale never really does, to the point that he's totally okay with murdering his own medics to strike a blow against his enemy. But Peeta is right there with Katniss, goes through all of the things she goes through (and worse) and still manages to find his way to peace and to wanting a new future for himself and for Katniss. She now lives in a world where she can want to have children, where she can raise them knowing they won't be sent off to the Games. Gale didn't want that future. Gale was willing to continue to let the Games happen, as long as it wasn't happening to HIS people. Meanwhile Peeta was brainwashed into believing Katniss was going to kill him, and he managed to push through that in order to trust her again. Peeta and Gale just had very different reactions to the reality of war, and by the time we reach the ending, Gale and Katniss have completely contradictory values and morals, and methods of maintaining those things. TL;DR Katniss choosing Peeta means she chooses peace, Katniss choosing Gale means she chooses war. The whole theme of the series hinges on her NOT turning into what Gale becomes by the end.
Fan of the books here! Katniss's three finger salute isn't an underground, rebellion symbol. At least, not at first. It originated in district 12 and is meant as a sign of solidarity and respect that's usually reserved for funerals. Her demonstrating that empathy and loss for Rue in the arena by performing her own "funeral" is what elicits that reaction, because it humanizes the senseless violence that the citizens of Panem are forced to watch.
I have NEVER heard so many people be unironically team Gale 🤢 It just gotta be because they are attracted to hemsworth, right? The character gale was at best a childhood friend who had an unhealthy claim on her, at worst a static “nice guy” creep turned war criminal!! Anyway… good episode.
One little thing to mention, is Zach was talking about how he wanted Katniss to have a moment where she doesn’t end up killing the last person in the games. That’s actually exactly what she did with Peeta. It doesn’t come across in the movies as well, but she is not in love with Peeta and she is only acting because she wants to survive. Peeta is not acting. The moment with the berries for Peeta was him willing to pull a Romeo & Juliet for Katniss, but Katniss’ thoughts in that moment were that she knew there was no way the Capitol would allow no one to win the games. Therefore, she rebelled against the Capitol, refusing to kill the person that stood between her and survival.
So true! In the books, Gale says the first time he realized he had feelings for Katniss was when one of the younger(ish) peacekeepers was flirting with Katniss.
Okay I have to fight this because Gayle (Gail idk I don’t remember?) is shown to be too much like Katniss in the book and in the movie, and Peeta compliments her. He’s not as stubborn, he cares for her, he does things for her, and even though he plays for the cameras he actually loved her the ENTIRE TIME!! Gayle is too stubborn and doesn’t listen to Katniss. He wants what he wants and doesn’t bend in any direction, hence what happened with Prim
Guys! No! Everything Peeta did was 100% NOT for clout. He cared for Katniss alot & when he very quickly realised him would not survive the games, he sought to do anything/everything he could to make sure she won. Plus don't forget he was there when Prim's name got called & Katniss volunteered, so hearing that she was willing to sacrifice herself for her sister would've been pretty heavy in Peeta's mind. Especially knowing his own family really didn't give two shits about him. He genuinely didn't expect to live & you very much see that in the sequels.
And I'm sorry, but the Gale ship was ALWAYS gonna flop. He had this expectation that they would end up to together whether or not Katniss was into it. She had so many other things to worry about, like not DYING! And it just becomes more obvious in the sequels that he doesn't really care about her feelings/opinions. He just wants her to get over her PTSD. & pretend that Peeta doesn't exist. PLUS i still can't forgive him for his involvement in Prim's death.
I am fully convinced that whoever ships Gale/Katniss is just crushing on Liam and is blinded to Gales's character because he's hot and because objectively, Jennifer and Liam look better together. I said what I said!! Thank you for being the voice of reason, Rainie! Team Peeta all the way.
Literally I can’t stand when the more popular ship is just the one with the conventionally hot guy. Josh is an attractive short king and Peeta is a much better person and match for Katniss! ❤
I've never been more stressed in my life watching a "guilty pleasures" episode 😬the amount of times I didn't agree with you (Kelsey and Zach) is insane 😂😭 (And thank you Raini for coming to defend Peeta
I always thought she might not necessarily be asexual, but she just had other shit to do! Gale and Peetas crushes are just clearly not a priority while she's fighting for her life...leading a resistance etc
THANK YOU. I used to be super team Gale, but after reflecting I really feel like she doesn’t belong with either. Like others say, Gale represents war rather than peace. I also always felt that her relationship with Peeta was performative and based out of survival rather than true romantic feelings. And even in the end of the series, I felt that her perspective made it seem like she just settled for the best option. Edit to add that I agree maybe not asexual, but I least don’t see her with either characters romantically.
Love the Hunger Games! I do agree that Josh Hutcherson did not fit my vision physically of Peeta but I think he fit the personality of Peeta. Another fun Tucci movie is Easy A. His character and his wife in the movie always crack me up. That may be a fun movie because the concept of the movie does not really hold up and I would love to hear Kelsey's POV.
😅 infuriating I’m sure for hardcore fans of the hunger games, but also it delighted me that the premise of this show kinda got its honest purpose. Zach has:had no clue ab how this narrative goes and his hot takes challenged me to look at my opinion differently
The District 11 uprising scene was SO. GOOD. AND. IMPORTANT!!! As a die hard fan of the books since childhood, I always LOVED that scene. It filled the gap that was left by excluding Madge's character from the movies and was another bit of foreshadowing to the revolution that was forthcoming
When you do Catching Fire, I insist that you have at least one person on who is Team Peeta. I’ve truly never seen so many people who are Team Gale, the toxic boy next door.
Totally relate with what Becky said that every chapter ends with a cliff-hanger. I vividly remember staying up reading the books while in college because I kept telling myself I’d read just one more chapter before doing my school work but when I finish one, I get so fidgety not knowing what happens next. So excited to hear what the rest of the episode is! HAPY TUCCI MONTH!!!
I see a lot of people say this, but I think the fact that she didn't want to end up with anyone in the begging, was because the capital didn't allow her to have those dreams. She didn't want to have a family because she didn't want her kids to grow up in that environment. She also never wanted to be a war symbol, she just wanted to live her life. So once their reality changes, it makes sense that she would open herself up to other possibilities. The fact that she ends up having a family is actually an act of defiance against the capital and the ultimate rebel act she could do which is to be happy with whoever she wanted, and not based on choices made out of fear.
@@lylivictor absolutely. I think that's why they went that route. But she kind of only stayed with him because he was the only one "damaged enough" to get her darkness. At least that's what was said in the books. Which....eh
I disagree with this take I see everyone say, Katniss genuinely liked peeta and I know people want her to be this independent person who doesn’t need anybody… but I feel like her ending up completely alone after everything she’s been through would be even sadder tbh, being with someone like peeta isn’t a bad thing
Zach NEEDS to watch the rest of the movies, could definitely see him becoming obsessed (also catching fire is arguably one of the best movies of all time)
I went on a cruise during my senior year of high school, and Catching Fire was one of three movies the TVs played on rotation for the *entire* cruise, so I watched it many times during that week. And you know what? I enjoyed it every time and still love it to this day lol.
Peeta is always seen as weak for some reason when he isn’t, I think it’s nice that he has more traditional feminine traits while Katniss has more masculine ones. I think peeta balances Katniss out and Katniss was genuinely upset when peeta was picked because he saved her life when they were younger and risked himself getting beat up by his abusive mum to do so. People think peeta isn’t useful in the games when he is, in fact in the books Katniss is constantly annoyed that she always owes peeta and feels guilty because peeta keeps doing things which help her without her realising while she keeps making things worse for him. I don’t think it’s Josh’s fault but they didn’t show how charismatic and witty Peeta is supposed to be, he knows how to play and manipulate the crowed. Which is why at first Katniss didn’t trust him because of how good he was at it and she thought he was manipulating her with his kindness but then realised he was saving her the whole time. Katniss always thought that peeta was too good for her through most of the franchise which is why she wants to protect him so much. I think Gale was good for Katniss at the beginning, they helped each other through the worst moments but Gale is very similar to Katniss but he also goes overboard. Katniss often disagrees with him because he takes things too far and is very bitter. He has negative traits like feeling like he owns Katniss in ways and getting jealous and weird with Katniss because of her act with peeta which is just… weird considering that’s not the thing he should be worried about and should be glad she survived. He doesn’t understand what Katniss is going through and while she’s traumatised he’s just pushing her for a relationship and not really listening. I think his reasons for revenge are justified but the way he’s fine with killing innocent people because he doesn’t understand that people are just clueless and have no choice is what pushes him over the edge, which is Katniss’ eyes makes him not much better than those killing innocent lives on the other side. I do think it’s sad how they never really become friends or see each other again though, because I do think they used to have a really good friendship before everything.
I was ecstatic for this episode and it was going great until the unironically group proclamation of being team Gale. For what I gather the main reason was bc he is "tall, brooding and brunette" aka "handsomer"? (And I put it in quotes bc personally I've never found Liam handsome) And yeah, he might have been good for his own family but that didn't translate to been good for Katniss or been good at all; other comments-like kamcalste's -have explained accurately the why of it. I was even more bummed about the statement because of the previous knowledge that most of them have read the books-and there Gale is even a worst fit for Katniss than that in the movies. It's even crystal clear that she doesn't think of him in a romantic way! And to be fair, it takes her a while to think in that way about Peeta, bc romance isn't important for Katniss in the books, but surviving is. As for Josh, he was a perfect Peeta. I have to admit that the first time I saw him in the role it was kind weird bc I had never seen him with blonde hair before, but after overcoming that insignificant initial shock, he embodied the kind-selfless-funny-clever-quietly strong Peeta that I had met through the books even with the short screen time the movies gave him. Even the author, Suzanne, agrees! She was at his casting audition! And if one of the nitpics of him not being the right fit for the role is that his physical appearance differs from what it's described in the books (that, let's be honest, it really is just him not having blue eyes bc even in the books he is of medium height), then why aren't they giving the same energy for other characters? Like are we forgetting that Katniss is supposed to be shorter, not fair skinned, have straight hair, be VERY thin and hairy? Jennifer had only the dark hair for the movie, and they loved her! Anyway, as an aside note, I have to admit that after remembering that all of them are millennials, them being on team Gale wasn't as shocking. So thanks, Rainie, the token gen z, for defending Peeta and not being a Gale apologist 💖
I don't know why this is considered a millennial vs gen z thing? Most people I know have always preferred Peeta over Gale even back to when the books first came out. (and I mean them as individual characters and not just when it came to their relationships with Katniss)
Not a millenial thing, more like a superficial thing, I am millenial I have been always team Peeta, sometimes they and Kelsey mostly, are really into appearances
@@iddoAdam Idk if there are more comments to make it a millennial vs gen z thing- or a bigger discussion out there on the internet about it; but I only commented on it as an after thought/fun fact/observation (aka why I wrote "as an aside note" at the end), bc personally when I have met people on team Gale, with the exception of two, they were millennials and when I have met people on team Peeta they were gen z. So my surprise of the crew being team Gale was less when I remembered the pattern I had observed in my personal life, and that they fit on it too. Quite a curious little thing.
@@amnotann ah okay, I gotcha. I think too that it's very much tied to appearances like was mentioned in a reply too. Like the couple of 'Team Gale' people I've met tend to be the ones who only saw the movies and think that Liam Hemsworth is more attractive than Josh Hutcherson and can't get over the fact that Josh is shorter than Jennifer Lawrence.(like I personally don't ship Katniss and Peeta romantically but I've seen people try to argue that they couldn't ship them just because of the fact that Josh was shorter) Not saying that people that genuinely like Gale can't and don't exist, but the fact that Liam is a more traditionally good looking guy def plays a role most of the time. Plays into the whole 'well this person is hot so we can forgive them/look past their flaws' trope too.
Im glad to hear that Rainie was also team Peeta. He literally loved her when they were small children. When i read the books i would weep at any of the scenes where they were intimate bc i just felt like he loved her so much and she was just so broken and so caught up in the shitty parts of their lives that she so rarely gave herself space to let in that love. And then when she finally did all hell broke loose and everything became so hard for them. So much of the story is so gut wrenching. Damn i need to read the books again😭😭
I’ve been binging episodes. Kelsey says so many wrong things with so much confidence. It’s driving me crazy. Peeta was faking love for clout. Nope. The three fingers mean the underground. Nope. it does become a symbol for the resistance but uuggghhhh. The dad - definitely dead. Stale bread - nope. Purposely burned and he got in trouble for it. Some of these are picky and she was possibly joking about the dad…but come on. And this is not the only episode. It makes me sad and today I’m thoroughly annoyed.
Yes! For someone that says she read the book she must know that Peeta burnt the bread on purpose, it doesnt come across in the movies but it is on the books
i cant take yall seriously now that you said ur anti peeta. its about the SYMBOLISM. its about how gale represents war and peeta represents peace. its about how gale was just going to keep going and bringing katniss into the ugliness and violence of everything she was trying to get away from. katniss choosing peeta was the message that the author was trying to send for the end of the series. how you have to choose peace in order to build a new world. gale wasnt what she needed, it was the stability of peeta where she could finally heal and move on in a post hunger games world. also gale is a jealous baby killer who couldnt stand the fact that katniss saw him as a brother instead so we dont stan him.
I thought they kissed to get Peeta medicine? they got more sponsors the more affectionate they were with each other and wasn’t he like about to die? Katniss wasn’t really in love with him at the time but she didn’t want him to die
Tucci gang Tucci gang Tucci gang 🤟🏾 AND REBECCA?!? Beautiful Edit: and not only does Kelsey look beautiful, her sincere fascination the more she learns of Becky’s name is so adorable.
I read hunger games in middle school and while i think they mostly did a good job of adapting it, they left a LOT out that helps with the overall story.(talking about the whole series) I think they left them out to keep a pg13 rating, i’d see an R one tho
Love that the comments are defending Peeta! The whole trilogy is Katniss falling for Peeta, but people expecting her to be in love with Gale, someone she SEE'S AS A BROTHER. Like especially in the books. He's so whiny, and he guilts Katniss for wanting to save Peeta in the 2nd book.
Watched this video then watched all of The Hunger Games movies. I can now declare I am team Peeta. He was always useless and hazard to himself but he was perfect. There needed to be more Peeta! When he was missing all I kept thinking was where is Peeta!
This is truly my favourite podcast and it makes me laugh, sometimes to the point of tears, every week. Thank you all so much for brightening my Mondays. Also, I'm team Peeta (thank you Rainie) and every time Kelsey heard vagina, I definitely heard it too 🤣🤣
I know that this is a podcast about movies, but I'm so happy they're doing The Hunger Games because the books are one of my all-time favorites (a huge understatement). It has left a big impression on me especially since it's the first dystopian book I've ever read. The writing, the world, and the concept is just sooooo so so so good. I love everything about it. And the movies are awesome, too! They did not disappoint. 😊😆
Re-read the books as adults and come back and tell me you still think Katniss and Gale were better together. Especially Mockingjay, Gale appeals to the part of Katniss that wanted chaos and war. Peeta appeals to her peace and humanity. Post war Gale isn't right for her. She would of lived her life restlessly without Peeta. He's the calm that keeps her grounded and that's what she needs. Not Gale and chaos.
After last weeks episode I rewatched THG movies and now I need to dig my books out of storage. I LOVED these books and I found out about them because the first book was used in my English class
As an archery instructor and someone who does Olympic style recurve shooting, the same katniss does, you can actually pull the string to your lips! Doesn't hurt or hit your nose or anything. Centering the string that way placing the arrow I the center of your line of sight, makes it easier to aim for this style of shooting
I love everyone on the “You Can Sit With Us” podcast, but I feel like that one is more of a gossip channel, and this is more of a “let’s just chill and talk about great movies”, and that’s more my jam. Love the podcast 💜
To answer Kelsey’s question about fire being difficult to CGI: yes. Lord of the Rings (Weta Digital) built a whole new engine to run for the fire used on the Balrog cause everything available at the time wasn’t good enough.
This episode had me laughing more then any other! The part about yeast infection and pita/Peeta bread. 😂 Fucking “is it cake?” 😂 and “you deserve to fight if your name is Primrose” 😂
zach's pitch for rewriting peeta just switches gale and peeta's characters omggggg like cmon guys. "sometimes you have to do immoral things to win" vs "unconditionally caring for katniss and her family" CMON
don't worry rainie, im with you! gale was a war criminal loser who just talks to katniss all kinds of crazy and she just lets it slide. peeta was actually sweet and they both cared for eachother while gale was a traitor!
No no no. Team Peeta. They were both faking it in the beginning, non argument. But gale is like a sibling to her, she was never down for it and he just kept pestering her like bro she’s not interested why should she have to settle for you, she can take care of her own just fine
I swear Guilty Pleasures are kind releasing the best in their arsenals of movies the past weeks.. I guess they're fighting back for this spaghetti deal lol
This is one of my favorite series. It was the first series I loved and that my parents read it with me and enjoyed them as well. I wish it was a bit more gruesome in the movie because the book was so detailed in that. But casting was good. This is definitely one of my tops.
