The Hunt (2012) Review - This Film Makes Me Angry... and Scared

The Hunt is a cautionary tale about the dangers of jumping to conclusions to quickly, and how good intentions if taken too far, can result in the opposite of justice.
My review of one of the best films of the last decade, The Hunt.

Mads Mikkelsen is so good as Hannibal Lecter. I need to re-watch the King Arthur movie. As an American I didn't realize how much Rome influenced Britain so it was a fresh fun take. And Kiera Knightly is hot. And the movie's Knight-ly so it fits

Strangely it seems , thers nothing lucas can do to defend his situation. He'd be seen as guilty if he argues his innocence or as in the film, he remains stunned by the accusation. His move to just walk into the church is everything as actions speak louder than words

A Danish person actually moved to America and worked in a nursery, where his female colleague suddenly chose to accuse him of touching one of the kids. He was interrogated by the police who beat him, lied to him and told him he could only leave if he gave a confession and that it didn't matter if he really did it or not. So he gave the confession under duress, got sentenced and years later when the colleague felt bad and came forward they released him and he killed himself. Probably one of the stories, as a Dane, that I have a hard time not hating America for, but as the movie shows this can happen anywhere. When you look at how people treat people who are accused of pedophilia online you see people call for execution and castration before they even mention seeing actual evidence. There probably isn't a crime worse than pedophilia but there isn't a crime that is worse to be wrongfully accused of.

That's not exactly how it went down though. The police did use the REID method on him, but that doesn't include beatings, although his trip to Rikers might have resulted in beatings from inmates. Also, he didn't kill himself. He died of a heart attack only 27 years old. Whether or not his condition after the ordeal and subsequently trauma had any role in this, is unclear to this day. For people interested in the case, his name was Malthe Thomsen and was at the time of the accusation in learning at International Preschools on Manhattan.

I’ve almost got in to the same situation. I am a behavior interventionist and I was helping a grade 6 kid. One day I asked her to turn her phone to the office because she’s not suppose to use it in class. She then proceed to call me a “pedophile” and “why do you always stare at me, do you like little girls?” I reported the situation to the admin right away. Luckily the vice principal was very supportive of me and doesn’t take any bullshits from her. Tho after couple days later, I went away for a week due to elbow surgery, she then told another student who I was working with that I had been suspended without pay for a week due to “staring at her butt”. Which makes the student (who has autism) afraid to work with me…

This movie was hard to watch but I consider it one of the best foreign films made in the last decade. Mads Mikkelsen is one of the best actors out there and he can just about play any role and nail it. He shines in the films where he is able to immerse himself in the character and show the full range of emotion. For all foreign movie buffs, Denmark is known for excellent movies that go deep and hit right in the gut. I would recommend seeking out all of Mads Mikkelsen's Danish films. You will be amazed.

The truth that they couldn't handle wasn't that he didn't do it, it was the truth that she lied. To put all your belief in a child and treat their word in the same regard as sainthood is tradition because the opposite would mean that children are capable of corruption as they, the adults, refuse to recognise that they are the very people that corrupted the child's innocence. And once this irrational step is taken, all rationality fades away: you spit on a child's face, you beat up a teenage boy, you punch a man buying groceries, you kill a man's dog, you shoot at him. Clearly a film on how people are run by emotions rather than logic.

IMO the most important moment of this film is the warning shot fired by his son in the last scene. The seed of doubt as to his fathers truthfullness and in particular his friends who did not betray him from the large square house. It is purposely left up to the viewer to discern whether Lucas was a victcim of said groupthink or he was backed by a group (in a large house with the mentioned basement and Klara not wanting to exit over the floor patterns) . Why would his son fire a shot unless his mind had been changed, given that he was so onside for the whole film untill the hunting sequence.

You know what's truly scary about this film? How videos like this exist, with comment sections jumping the shark and being instantly convinced that Lucas is an innocent man, victim to the unfortunate lie of a confused girl. How people are so quick to assume that just because a story is framed one way, it must be taken at face value. If you want to get all legal about this, let's get one thing clear: very few key facts are shown about the crimes that might or might have not transpired. That's how it goes in court with cases like these, where there are suspicions of sexual abuse linked with several kids: kids are terrible witnesses and don't understand much of the world, so their way of dealing with trauma is mysterious and usually silent. But predators are greedy and eventually when you've created enough victims you will get "unlucky" once and a victim will manifest enough signs for the right people to be concerned. Just hear me out, is it not possible in your mind that Lucas was a nonce and that he did abuse those kids? How many kids (to be conservative, 3) spoke about the same room with the same person. And one scene after we see Markus in a basement room with paintings that matches that description? The film drops many deeply subtle clues and us as viewers, the first time watching the movie, either don't pick up on them or choose to ignore them in favour of being overwhelmed with only that which is clearly being presented to us. So please think on it, the plot and moral might not be as simple as you want it to be. If you feel prepared to entertain the idea, watch this video with English subtitles: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zZ7bXc9OcVw.html
@katocs
@katocs Год назад
True, however, Lucas' home has no basement and if you're talking about the basement of his cousin, it's probably the exact reason the kids talked about it, because their parents got it in their head since they all frequently met there. Lucas didn't have a car and people always drove to that house so it's highly unlikely Lucas just took kids to that location, even if he had a car, which he doesn't. This would be ridiculous. Lucas being sexual with just Klara in the kindergarten would be a theory that could make more sense, however, there's many points proposing the opposite. Klara has the exact words she said about Lucas from her brother and his friend showing her porn earlier that day. Plus, she made the heart and lied to Lucas that it wasn't from her, making him reject it, which obviously upset her. She then told the head of the kindergarten, after she recited the words of her brother and his friend that Lucas gave her the heart, which we clearly know, is also a lie. All in all a somewhat possible theory but everything kinds points against it
@mrpenguin501
@mrpenguin501 Год назад
Your theory is quite interesting, but unfortunately completely refuted by the director of the film, Thomas Vinterberg, who in an interview stated that the character Lucas is 100% innocent. They initially built the plot of the film in such a way that for the viewer there was no mysterious "guilty or innocent?". He said from the very beginning "Lucas is a good man who could never hurt a child". And this was done in order to show how quickly hysteria and panic cover people's minds. Not in order to turn the film into a horror about the elusive Freddy Krueger killing kids in a boiler room. Plus a comment about the video you linked to. Yes, many of the theses presented there are very interesting and give a look at history from a different perspective. BUT! 1. The Actor and the Director directly say that Lucas is not guilty. 2. Many facts such as "using the basement in the godfather's house", "paintings", "he would have reacted much more if he was innocent" look very far-fetched. Because how do you imagine a person leading a small child through someone else's house full of people? 3. All accusations from parents did not appear after they "notice something strange in their children" or in the "behavior of the educator." No, only after the teacher, after consulting with a clearly incompetent psychologist, raised a panic. 4. The paintings were not in the basement. They were on the main floor. Marcus walked in the dark so as not to wake anyone. And these pictures are shown in order to show that EVERYONE who harmed Lucas knew him from childhood. Thus, showing that those whom Lucas considered his closest friends instantly turned away from him, leaving him alone with the chaos going on around him. 5. I would also like to draw your attention to the work of Thomas Vinterberg and his film Festen. Dogme #1 where the protagonist, as in "Jagten" is "a victim no one wants to hear". Not just because critics said that the director "deserved the right to make such a movie" Because it was he who was able to show that absolute disregard or mass hysteria erase the boundaries of truth, thereby causing the victim to scream about his innocence. The narration of the story is similar to the stories of Kafka, where a person is carried at breakneck speed through what is happening, but he does not have time to understand what happened, and now he is already on the threshold of the gallows. If Vinterberg wanted to show that Lucas is a rapist, he would have said it in plain text, such is his directorial style. I'm sorry if I'm not speaking correctly. English is not my native language)

People like you are scary. "If you want to get all legal about this, let's get one thing clear: very few key facts are shown about the crimes that might or might have not transpired. That's how it goes in court with cases like these" Yes, and it's fucking despicable. The presumption of innocence is a staple of western democracy. People being convicted of unprovable crimes from decades prior is downright Orwellian. You're an example of why false/exaggerated allegations against men are so poisonous and so dangerous. You de facto believe men are predators even when there's no evidence whatsoever and a mountain of evidence against. And nothing will dissuade you of this fact. This trend permeates society. Misandry is rife.
