A single-seat fighter that was mechanically robust, simple and easy to fix, the Hurricane accounted for both roughly two thirds of Fighter Command’s strength and roughly two thirds of enemy aircraft downed during the Battle of Britain.

Hurricane vastly underrated

Didn't it prove to also be a very good carrier aircraft? I have read that the Seafire was really tricky due to it's narrow undercarriage?

One of the things that you forgot to mention was the fact that Sydney decided to build the Hawker Hurricane because he foresaw the war, where is the RAF didn't place any orders until he'd already built nearly 200... A full site that would save Britain in the coming years

he also gave it a wide track undercarriage and a rad downstream of the prop to stop overheating on take off. smart guy that sir sydney camm! also in the time it took to build 2 spits you could have 3 hurricanes!

Wonderful video, I saw 6 or 7 of them flying at duxford, I never seen so many hurricanes flying together in my lifetime, I hope I see this wonderful flying spectacle in greater numbers soon! The unsung hero, the hurricane. Not to say the spitfire was not a great plane also but the hurricane was underrated.... I really love both of these fantastic British fighters of the second world war

Without this old girl we would never have won the battle of Britain. We had nowhere near enough spitfire to take on the bombers aswel as the fighters. Love the hurricane (and the spit of course) . Great video thanks

well learned something new there today. i knew that the hurricane did well in the BoB but that it downed more german planes than all other planes / AA combined.... that's something i didnt know!

At-last the work horse gets it's spotlight, now you only have the Lightning and Camel to do.

The Hurricane was a more stable gun platform than the Spitfire as the thick wing enabled them to be concentrated better.

The top ace Pat Pattle used both the Gladiator and the Hurricane.

Both the Hurricane and the P-40 were RAF workhorses the first four years of the war

As always. Cheap and sturdy beats complex and expensive. Look through history from T34 tanks to Hurricanes and hand weapons like the AK47 and Bren gun. The Hurricane was our saviour because it was built with one rule. Keep it simple!

The polish squadrons proved that the hurricane was a first class fighter. They shot down many German aircraft in ww2. Look up your RAF history on the battle of Britain.

These videos are great and really interesting but the 3d models of the aircraft are awful.

Everyone here saying the hurricane was forgotten, when everyone forgot the bomber boys.
@magecraft2

With planes like the Mosquito and Lancaster how can the bomber boys be forgotten? Maybe the Wellington is the forgotten Bomber? I have a place in my heart for the Halifax.
@napalmhotdog4365
@napalmhotdog4365 6 лет назад
Robert Pettigrew I mean the people who died. And anyway the number of people who know those bombers sadly are far less than those who know the spitfire.
@magecraft2

I think that the Battle of Britain was such a pivotal point in the survival of Britain along with the Atlantic convoys that they get the huge remembrance. I feel that the troops in all other theatres have the respect of people but maybe not with the same intensity.
@napalmhotdog4365
@napalmhotdog4365 6 лет назад
Robert Pettigrew I agree but bomber command sent 125,000 and 55,000 were killed, making up 1/10 of all British and commonwealth deaths.
@mrrolandlawrence

indeed. the mossie was the best bomber of the war by a country mile. the yanks did a full analysis of ww2 after... they could not work out why we were obsessed with bombing germany and leaving coastal command and all the RN & MN to an icy death when the berlin run did sweet FA except rack up a load of fatalities. speaking to a family friend who did the berlin run, he said he lost every single friend he had in the RAF during those times. dowding & park - hero's. Sholto and harris, not so much.

Sir Sidney Cam went onto be involved with the early design work on the Hawker Harrier too, before his death.
@jackfuller8960
@jackfuller8960 5 лет назад
Sidney Camm was one of the best aircraft designers of all time. Did the Hawker Fury, Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest, Sea Fury, Hunter and had some involvement in the design of the Kestrel (which evolved into the harrier). All of these aircraft were pretty exceptional in one way or another.

I know at the time of the BoB it was the.most numerous and killed more enemy planes than the spit. It could turn inside the spit, had better gun placings was nice and stable etc, but top 10 ? It was outclassed by 1941 as a fighter, supposed to be replaced by the Typhoon. So does it really rank above the SE5a, the Lightning, , Hunter ? Maybe a series on the bridesmaids, the ones overshadowed by the more glamorous contemporary. Halifax, Hurricane, Jaguar etc

The Hurricane has a high line turn, but the Spitfire just breaks off and disappears over the horizon. Because of Roll rate A Hurricane can’t survive a spitfire Air to Air, front or rear, and it’s extra armour to attack bombers little compensation to the hurricanes pilot. So caught out of time it deserves its moniker the coffin of death. Without the Spitfire, Britain would have to hang its head in shame.
