Even if the lady told the guy that she paid for a large $3.99 bag of ice like he told the employee outside, he took 4 small $1.99 bags of ice. That’s double what “he thought” they paid for. He knew damn well he was taking more than what they paid for miscommunication or not.
The store I worked at years ago we didn't mess with the ice. It was run by a delivery guy who had his route and handled the machine. Similar to our bread, milk and certain snacks like Doritos, Pepsi and Coke. All of them decided what to stock and how much. They made up the prices on the stuff and decided when to have sales and let our corporate know. We just got a percentage of sales.

I don't know if the guy really is the thief in this one, more like the proxy for the real thief. His wife probably told him something other than what was true because why not, we'll have plausible deniability when he takes the wrong amount of ice and just claim he was confused, because he probably was genuinely confused.

i once paid for a bag of ice, and then mistakenly took the entire sack holding all the individual ice bags. When I got home and unpacked eight $3.99 bags of ice, i knew i screwed up. Yes, screwed up, that's what being moral looks like.
I did this also granted I grabbed the ice then paid but i didn't know I messed up till my grandmother asked me what the heck she going to do with all that ice.

@Troy - It doesn’t matter. You have to get approval for any exchanges or mishaps from the cashier and he clearly took what was not payed for. The mistake was his fault.
