The Ilaiyaraja Signature Style Synth Explained | Suvai Snippets ep-8

Composer Ilaiyaraja uses the Synth with an Indian touch, featuring many glides (or gamakas, or portamentos), which gives his signature "feel" to it. He uses this western instrument in a way that the western pop scene hadn't. There are glides and portamentos in western pop, but not to this extent, and style.
Synthesizers can be made to generate continuous pitches in several ways:
(1) By pressing time: Specific models allow certain "synth" voices to glide the pitch continuously when the next finger is pressed slightly before the previous finger is released. Note: your keyboard may not have this functionality. It is dependent on the model and mode. I used a Yamaha Motif Xs synthesizer, which has many synth "voices" - you can turn on and off, this gliding functionality.
(2) By pitch bend - a wheel can make the pitch go from one note to another continuously. This is found in advanced keyboards.
(3) By software - A keyboard may be a controller for a software generated synth sound. You may be able to generate continuous pitches by even drawing on the screen.
The method is not important, but the final quality of a synth that makes these gliding sounds gives that "Ilaiyaraja" feel. You may start to recognize many synth glides in his popular songs.
The synthesizer voices used from Yamaha Motif XS are:
(1) Mr. Finger - Punnagai Mannan
(2) Soft RnB - Idhayam Oru Kovil
(3) Mini Soft - Pothi vecha
Apologies for the hissing noise. Will try to reduce next time.

@@ImayonRaja I am so happy to see this feedback because each video is tested with non musicians... I reshoot if people don’t understand. By my 10th episode, I am able to guess how to present the material even before testing... my Harris Signature (part 2) was a nightmare to make it easy to understand and fit within 6 minutes😂, took me 6 weeks. Lots of reshooting... if it is Live classroom setting it is much easier to present, because it is interactive and we have 45 mins. If video is unclear, people just leave the video.

Mr.Raja have not only used synthesizer's like Yamaha DX7 ,Roland Juno,Roland D-50(Which had portamento, glide etc) but also sampler keyboards like Ensoniq Mirage (EPS and EPS-16+ sampler workstations in the Ensoniq line-up).So he used FM Synthesis and also sampling technologies in his songs.

That first piece is from Nayagan where Kamal meets Saranya. That whole sequence gives me goosebumps. I remember seeing a bgm breakdown of each section of that scene many years back. Cant remember who did it. The song still playing when we walks through the door. And it abruptly ending when she says she has maths exam. The intriguing bit where she says she still goes to school. Ant then this track. Its pure gold. Thanks for your videos! They are very well made.

I saw the title of this video about Ilaiyaraja's music breakdown and I was beyond thrilled! And you did not disappoint at all. Thank you! We all intuitively know the signature style of his music but couldn't articulate properly because we don't have the musical and technical language that precisely captures it. You seem to have a very good understanding of these intricate details. And more importantly you have the gift of explaining it so that the noobs like me could understand. Outstanding work! For the western music - classical or otherwise - there are a good number of dedicated quality youtube channels that focus on breaking down musical elements. From Bach, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, to Stravinsky - one can search for a symphonic composition and learn a lot about that composition and the composer. Unfortunately we don't seem to have such a breadth of information about the music greats from India. Although things are getting much better with the advent of internet and especially youtube. Thanks to the folks like you! If time permits, please do make a video series for musical greats like AR Rahman and Illayaraja breaking down melodies, rhythms, instrumentations etc. A selfish request - do Illayaraja's music first. (Just a note/clarification that yes, I did check out all of your videos talking about their music. Loved them all) Very soon this can become the go-to channel for music-reference for their music. I know its asking a lot but seems like you are the best one to handle it. Also you have the wit and humor to keep the content interesting. And I am sure there is a huge fan crowd that yearns for such content. All the best!

Kalaignan was the name of the movie, it had a very experimental electro funk meets rock kind of soundtrack, totally out of his usual comfort zone, and was received with mixed reactions. True. In casual conversations, people would say ARR started using synths a lot. But it is actually IR who pioneered the synth in Tamil film, and used it extensively, in a very signature style. Every other hit IR song uses synth... that too in flute like/ nadaswaram like ways. So people would not even notice the synth use there.
@NikZ500
@NikZ500 2 года назад
@@suvaissance ARR uses synth for ambience and bass lines. Essentially he plays ragas and chords in his tracks giving a richer taste. IR sir uses synths for harmonies and melodies giving beauty to lyrics

@@NikZ500 yes yes... but mentioned that to highlight the confusion which associates all things electronic with ARR compositions only.

Most of the raja sirs compositions are major scale to minor scale transactions in one song! And adding the synth to it have a new feel... most of the times the same Notes is.., S r g m which used in the minor will be used in the major to create a continuous flow and that technique really made a very cache music in late 90's...
