** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
An absolute cracker today from Cris Moore in the form of his Square Dance - a puzzle which teaches some simple arithmetic and some gorgeous logic. How do these strangely numbered cages work?!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Cage totals are shown in the upper left corner of the cage. Inequalities between cells point to the small of the two digits. Nine cells in the grid are “multipliers”. If a multiplier appears in a cage, then it multiplies the sum of the other digits in the cage to produce the cage total. For instance, if a cage contains 3, 4, 5, 6 and 3 is the multiplier, the cage total would be 3*(4+5+6)=45. A multiplier which is not in a cage has no effect. Each row, each column, and each 3x3 box contains one multiplier, and each digit appears as a multiplier once.

Did anyone else notice that the cage totals were all perfect squares, going along with the "Square Dance" title? I also realized square totals greater than 81 were possible. 100 can be achieved with a 5 multiplier combining with a 3,8, and 9, or a 4, 7, and 9.144, the highest possible, can actually be reached with several possible multipliers: 6, with a 7, 8, and 9; or 8, with a 5, 6, and 7; or 9, with a 4, 5, and 7.

The way I determined where the 4 and 8 went was quite different. Since I immediately saw that the mutiplier in box 9 was in row 7, I realized that putting an 8 there would go r7c9. But that would give us a 7 in r7c4, then putting an 8 in r4c4, and that would leave no place to put 8 in box 6. So box 9 had the 4 multiplier.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Год назад
This was my way too. It required ruling 8 out of the 16 cage in box 6, that Simon also did, but not in the most straightforward way. If 8 went in the 16 cage, it had to be accompanied by 134, but those aligned with 134 in the 9 cage in box 5, so all three would have to go into the top row of box 4, where we already know we need a 2. Four digits into three cells won't go. Far simpler than Simon made it appear, I thought. This was probably the route to avoid the hard work on the 16 cage that Simon did, to get its precise constituents far earlier than I did.
@stevieinselby
@stevieinselby Год назад
Well ... I solved it, but it definitely felt bifurcatey. The main thing I missed was the trick about putting a 4-multiplier in box 7 breaks box 4, which is very simple when you see it, but I just didn't 😥. But a great puzzle despite my own shortcomings! (On the plus side, I wasn't the one to miss a red x-wing that was just sitting there for half an hour, I spotted that one straight away!)
@lordclockworks1570
@lordclockworks1570 Год назад
Yeah me too, I solved it by figuring out you can't put 8 multiplier in box 9's cage, because it causes 4-cell quadruple outside the cage in box 6 to force a 6 multiplier in box 3 be in the same column as 8-multiplier.
@pialba
@pialba Год назад
@@lordclockworks1570 Yep, that's similar how I solved it too (mult 8 on box 9 would be on the right of the inequality sign, which puts 6 in r2c8, which puts 1267 in column 8 which blocks the 64 from being 125×8, and it can't be 134×8 either because then 3 can't be placed in column 7)

Hi Simon! I found this channel over Christmas, and since then it has been instrumental in getting me through my university homework and readings 😂. I haven’t gone a single day without doing my work with one of these videos propped up in the corner to help keep me focused - not very successfully I’m afraid, as I often get distracted by a brilliant breakthrough or solve, however it is very enjoyable! A small hint to help clarity. To mark the multiplier in all red cage, I leave the corner mark, even if I've filled all center marks of the cage. e.g. We figured out from the start that the 49 cage had 1247 as center marks. So leaving ^7 corner mark helps reminding us that 7 is multiplier, not sum.

The puzzles in The Talos Principle are excellent and its underlying story/philosophy I feel elevates it to a true work of art. Normally, I wouldn't expect that side of the game to translate well to streaming but I think the CTC community would appreciate this complimentary aspect of the game too. Either way, the story side of the game is not mandatory and does not in any way stop you from exclusively enjoying the puzzles. The game reportedly induces motion sickness in some players. There are some 'motion sickness' options worth trying (turn off view bob, increase field of view (FOV), decrease player move speed, turn on 3rd person view). Having said that, the issue of motion sickness is a highly subjective one and it is difficult to predict if Simon will feel comfortable playing this game or not. From my perspective, I enjoy Simon and Mark's commentary the most when they are in the 'puzzle solving zone'. As much as I love The Talos Principle, I think everyone's enjoyment of the stream would be diminished if Simon was feeling uncomfortable while playing.

Around 30:00 the way to explain this is that a 1348 cage would create a sort of virtual x-wing on 134 in R5&6, so 134 in B4 would have to go in R4, but there also has to be a 2 there, meaning 4 numbers in 3 cells

The easy way to see the thing at 30:00 is that if you put 134 in the cage with the 2 also needing to go down there somewhere, you have 1234 in rows 5 and 6 in boxes 5 and 6, meaning all of 1234 have to go in row 4 in box 4.
@BinaryBolias
@BinaryBolias Год назад
Based on the functionality of this puzzle's logic, and the fact that none of it crosses any box boundary, it seems like you can just transpose it one box downward (rows rearranged as 7 8 9 1 2 3 4 5 6) to get two 3s in corners.

It's a large interactive logic puzzle, where you need to find out how each member of an 19th century ships crew met their untimely end by investigating various vignettes from different points in time and from different perspectives and using what you find to piece together exactly what happened. It has a lot of "ah hah" moments, where you get that great sense of satisfaction from solving a good puzzle.

I imagine it must be quite mentally tiring to solve a puzzle every day (and they are generally increasing in difficulty and variety judging by video lengths!) for 4+ years on the trot and having to record it (and run the channel). Both Simon and Mark have remarkable stamina. This was a great puzzle - the only tricky part was resolving the 4-8 multipliers. I really think it would help Simon if e.g. the green colouring was removed (once the multiplier possibilities in red are defined in each box) AND changing red highlighting to e.g. yellow. Blue digits on red are VERY difficult to see/scan. Of course, not noticing the "X-wing" in Box 7-8 multipliers impact on Box 9 really slowed down the solve.

The Talos Principle is absolutely incredible. Especially the expansion content Road to Gehenna. It is a fully first person game though, so motion sickness could be a concern. There isn't any fast movement though, just looking and moving around while manipulating the environment. Kind of like The Witness in that respect. E: I'm actually wrong, there is a third person option now! If having a character model for visual reference helps motion sickness then that's a good option.

20:50 He didn't really explain why the 9 can't be at the bottom of column 5. This would put 1/2/3/4/5 in 4 cells in column 4 boxes 5 and 8. You could use a fifth cell in box 2 to contain the fifth of these 4 digits (specifically, the 2) in column 4, but then you would have to cram the remaining four digits 1/3/4/5 in box 2 into R1C6, R3C5, and R3C6

Simon pointed out that 7, 8 and 9 are in C5 and C6 of box2, but maybe not clear enough. Therefor 7, 8 and 9 must be in C4 in positions 4 to 9. In those positions 7 and 8 can only be in R4C4 and R7C4, so 9 must be in R8C4 or R9C4.

12:20 "Not that hard YET". I've passed that stage, even placing the digit in the R1C3 multiplier cell, and I'm now stuck. 29:40 With the 8 combination, 134 are forced into row 1 in block 4. There's no place for 2. 30:30 Then ruling out 589, the only combinations are 7621 and 7432. 72 are forced into row 6, 43 in row 5 breaks R5C4, so 61 is in row 5. 40:00 That's a 45 pair in the cage, block 9 row 7.

I'm not sure that's the correct terminology, but he could certainly place a 2 in that cell. It doesn't see all the other candidate digits - doesn't see 5,6 - so it's not a "naked" single. But regular sudoku on 2s in the top three boxes means it can only go in r2c4 in box 2. So it's a hidden single, rather than a naked single (it being the last place for a 2 in the box).

I like the Talos Principle. It has some great puzzles. I'm only worried that you may get caught up in some of the extra philosophy interactions. Its all good stuff, but it may not be suitable for streaming. All that being said, I still want you to try it out!!!

136:24 solve time for me. Sheesh. I got stuck a few times and had to use your vid and thought I eventually got it, I still have some questions ... I'm sorry but I don't see the logic behind some of your solves. 20:34 How did you determine that 9 in the 81 box had to be in the left two squares let alone where the 78 pairs went? The 789 in the 25 box doesn't restrict it to what you put that I can see. You could have 9 in the right side of the 25 box and then 9 in the right side of the 81 box. What am I missing? 23:36 How did you rule out 9 in the 16 box?

Can someone help me understand why r4c4 couldn’t be a 9? I didn’t really follow Simon’s logic that resulted in the 78 pair in c4.

Simon loves to explain every single step no matter how simple it is or how often it will happen in a single sudoku. Like for example the repeated mentioning, that the high cages must have a multiplier in it, because four digits can't add up to more than 30. But then at 20:50 he put 78 in the grid with logic worth explaining or even mentioning by just saying "where could go 9 here? Oh i think i'v broken the puzzle, no i havn't!"
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Год назад
Wasn't it explained sufficiently, starting fifteen seconds earlier (20:35) by "789 are very restricted in this column [c4] by this [789 triple in box 2]"? There are only two places in column 4 that 7 and 8 can go, and that forces 9 into the 81 cage.

20:51 How does he come to the conclusion that 9 is in c4 r8 or 9? why can't it be in c5 row 8 or 9, with a 9 in r2c6 and a 9 in r4c4?! Someone let me know please! Thank you.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Год назад
He needs to find places for 7, 8 and 9 in c4. Thanks to the 789 triple in the cage in box 2, none of them can appear in c4 in box 2. Also, none of them can appear in the 9 cage in box 5 (=1234). To fit all three into the remaining places in c4, you have to put the 9 in the 81 cage in c4 in box 8. (It seemed easy when Simon explained it, but I'd totally missed it during my solve.)
