** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Wow! Emphyrio's Safe Distances - a puzzle with four 9 cages - is pure magic. It's amazing how much work naughty dominoes (and their avoidance) can do!!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in a cage must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. The clue outside the grid gives the sum of the digits along the indicated diagonal. Digits in orthogonally adjacent cells cannot sum to 3,4 or 5. In addition, 1 and 9 cannot be orthogonally adjacent, neither can 2 and 8, nor 3 and 7.

I'm guessing it was removed to avoid distracting you into focusing on the given 4s. The only real power it would have had is breaking the 5vs6 symmetry, but there aren't any 45 dominos either. It's more elegant without a basically unused rule imo

@@petemagnuson7357 yes, I started setting with just the sum to 3/4/5 rule (and with a quite different setup with just cages and no givens, this version with the two given 4 and the LK appeared much later when I had already fully decided on the rules). I considered indeed adding the sum to 10 exclusion to make the rules simpler but went with this weirder but less restrictive statement to keep the post break in solve path a bit tighter.

Thanks a lot for the feature! I didn't expect it to be featured so quickly :). Brilliant solve as usual from Simon, perfectly as intended and I really enjoyed a lot watching it! :) Sorry that the break in is a bit tricky :). I found out later that there is another way to think about how to rule out the wrong placement for the "123" on Phisto ring by considering where the last 123 can go in boxes 2,4,6,8 and using something a bit similar to Thor's Hammer logic, but in essence it's more or less the same. It's also worth noticing that the final grid verifies complete orthogonally adjacent entropy (123 are never orthogonally adjacent to each other, neither are 456, nor 789). It's not a direct consequence of the weird ruleset, which is a bit less restrictive, but if I remember correctly it becomes true if there is a GSP setup (which is the case here with the symetry along the positive diagonal, 1,4,9 matching themselves and 56/23/78 matching each other).

Personally, I found the non-Phistomefel ring break-in quite elegant as well. There are only 2 possible arrangements of the remaining lower digit in the boxes 1,3,7,9: if one is in a inner corner, it forces all in the inner corner. And if they all aren't in the corners, lower digits in b2468 get forced in both inner corners, while forming double x-wings and forcing a lower digit in the centre of the box 5, making it impossible to place the remaining 2 lower digits.

What I really love abut this puzzle, and I think it is way ahead of anything else I have seen in this respect, is the way that the unfolding logic happens through particular digits, pairs or triples (triples at first, pairs and digits later). It is not ever really about regions of the grid (OK the break in involves box 5 and the pivotal role of box 5 is there in every phase on reflection - that in itself is notable). Perhaps "The Miracle Sudoku" does this in a way, but this puzzle exploits this particular aspect more subtly. At each stage you have to focus on the right digits, and that sustains the logic from the break-in through the solve. And it is the way that this logic is sustained which makes this puzzle one of my all-time favourites.

A really amazing and clever puzzle, I got stuck for a long time trying to figure out which way the pattern on the ring went but eventually found a way. My method was using similar but slightly different logic to Simon's. If yellow was low, then the final orange digits in the phistomefel corner boxes (r2c2, r2c8, r8c2, and r8c8) would be touching a 123 triple no matter how yellow was positioned. Thus they could only be 5 or 6, because every other digit would break one of the keepaway rules (IE a 9 or 4 next to a 1, an 8 next to a 2, etc) and/or be a repeat in the box. This would mean that the blue digits on the ring would now all be from the digits 456 via phistomefel, and with the given 4s we'd have 56 pairs looking into the central cell of box 5. Now, for the same reason Simon said, we couldn't make that cell a 123, and thus would have to position the 123s in the box around it in some fashion. This would also stop it from being 789 because of the keepaway rules. It could never be a 4 because of the given 4s (and now it would be touching a 1 too). And the 56 pairs we just got in the ring remove the last possible values for it. Ergo, the puzzle would be broken with that arrangement on the ring.

I think Simon got the intended break-in spot on. I certainly didn't find an easier way. It is apparently possible to do it without Phistomefel but using similar logic - Phistomefel highlights the key squares a bit more clearly, but if you are looking at those squares anyway (by solver's intuition) you can get the same deduction. And what a stunningly clear solve of a tricky puzzle. It astonishes me how quickly Simon knows where to look.

Another way of thinking about how the blues had to be low was that if they were high, their only options were 5 and 6 given those became the only options via Phistomefel and other shenanigans, and then the ring couldn't be completed as you can't fill three cells with just 5 and 6. Therefore the blue cells had to be the low digits.
@pialba
@pialba Год назад
Actually, the corners can be 4 so if the yellows are low the blue digits can actually be 456, which doesn't immediately lead to a contradiction. However, notice r5c5 also is next to all low digits and therefore must be 5 or 6, which puts too many digits from 456 on row 5 thanks to the given digit.

I then checked the video, realized I'd improperly ruled out 126 as a possibility for a 9, and also needed help getting started on the set. After that, I cleared the puzzle and it still took me 39:06. ...I'm really not good at SET puzzles.

I feel a bit frustrated as I saw the very obvious hints towards the Phistomophel ring and decided "naw, it's got nothing to do with that" and spend 20 minutes looking for something else. My break-in was slightly different though. The other spacing of 123 in the even spaces forced 56 in the center positions of boxes 1379 since 123 are eliminated from the outer edges, and 789 forces its partner 123 in the inner corner which is impossible given the original. Then that forces 4s in opposite corners which gives an impossible coloring of the remaining 56s. Yours was cleaner though.

65:04, I saw the ring, but not how to figure out which of the two options I could use for the location of the 123 cells. I had to watch the solve after half an hour to get over that hump.

somehow I got this without thinking about the PR at all, by focusing on placement of low digits and figuring that the inside corner cell of b1,3,7,and9 had to be low...but maybe I got lucky with a false assumption or something

Wonderful setting and solving!! I am astonished at how so many of these digits just get solved all at once, like all the 9s at once etc. Beautiful! Favorite quote from today’s video: - “So it creates a triple in One Direction. Is this a sort of Harry Styles-type triple is it?”

I don't follow the logic at 27:10. Why are r9c2 and r8c9 the same digit? If you put r8c1 =1, r9c1 =6, r9c2=2, and r9c8=1, r9c9=5, R8c9=3, the "9" boxes are correct, I have obeyed the rules but r9c2 and r8c9 are not the same. Maybe somebody can enlighten me and show me where I am wrong.

@@trainsinpoland I think his logic for saying those numbers were the same was wrong as well, if deduced in the order he clicked. But if you started r9c2 you can see r2c1 is the same because that digit in c3 needs to be in box 4. Follow that logic around and you get all the same cells being the same as he did.

Why not use the same colour for linked digits (eg no purple next to purple)? When I have linked digits in colouring I generally try to tie them together in some way. Just a way I found to make the grid rather less busy when I solved this one - in case it helps anyone out there.
@JamieDenAdel
@JamieDenAdel Год назад
I initially thought the same thing, but by making the first 7/8 red, for example, it's easier to see the sudoku, versus trying to ignore the partially purple 2/3s, if 7/8 also had purple in it. Also, I think the flashing can confusingly flip directions with different combinations, always putting the lowest number-keyed color on top.
@markbennet9058
@markbennet9058 Год назад
@@JamieDenAdel I am colour-blind, and busy grids don't work for me. I suggested it because it might help some people. I sometimes use lettering with AI, BH, CG, DF pairs and E as the unpaired digit. I might use the same colour flash for related digits against a high low (or odd/even) background. I agree that spotting Sudoku is a key thing. Go with what works for you.

Too many colors are making you confused. Blue and yellow should have been merged back to orange once you figured out the parity. Green and purple were clearer without a second colour, you already know they are the nine 2s and nine 3s.

5:52 another little sudoku deduction went missing here. simon says "red goes in one of these 3 positions", but it is actually only possible to be in 2 positions as well, because in box 2 red is 100% in c6, so red in box 8 can not go in c6 as well :)

I wish you had explained why the green digit had to go in the middle square at 27.39. You are normally so much better at explaining logical decisions. I could not see why this should be the case but you just moved on. I couldn't even see that the greens in boxes 1,3,7 and 9 had to be the same in truth.

It would have also meant he didn't have flashed colours at the end, and could have had that satisfying feeling of double clicking a solid colour to enter all the 2s, 3s, 7s and 8s. 🙂
