** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
The question of how puzzles end up with the ratings they do is a vexed and interesting one. Myxo's sudoku, Revolver, has perhaps the lowest rating of any we've featured on the channel. And yet... it is startlingly brilliant. All hail the CTC Testers who have unearthed another stunner!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in a cage must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Digits may not repeat within a cage. Every digit, except the digit in the centre (r5c5), has a 'partner digit' that is always placed in the cell 180° rotationally symmetrical to its own, rotated around the centre of the grid. Which digits are paired up must be deduced by the solver. (eg If the digits 1 and 2 turned out to be a rotational pair and r2c4 is a 1, r8c6 must be a 2.)

I don't worry too much about the rating personally, but about the feedback I get from people. I've received a lot of positive feedback about this puzzle, but also a bit of negative feedback - the constraint just isn't enjoyable for everyone, which is fair! I think the main thing to take away is to give all puzzles a fair chance if they seem interesting :)

I have not spotted it, so i will have to watch on from 39:52 (where i finally had gotten enough clues from Simon to solve till the final broken pattern myself) to know what that step involves. And it will be a hard journey, since at 42:33 Simon puts a 4 in r6c2 where it is excluded by the 4's in box 4 needing to be in row 5. Hope it will not be the only rough sudoku. Okay that was a reasonable fast spot of the oopsie. I really was not smart today for not seeing that finish to the pattern.

This puzzle exemplifies why one should watch Simon solving. Personally, I can and I have solved this puzzle, but Simon invariably does so following a much more elegant path and quicker despite taking his time to both find the right logical step and the time to explain his thought process. While Simon misses the odd "obvious" step, I find his ability to zone in to the key ideas absolutely fascinating and outstanding. It also makes one think about rating puzzles. Indeed, if one were to miss, as I frequently do, the elegance of the intended solve path, then what does the rating mean? Maybe the puzzle pads or repositories should enable setters to publish their key solving steps to those who successfully solved the puzzle, so as to compare one's solve to the intended and appreciate the true worth of a puzzle.

The 'rotational pairs' constraint was developed by sirxemic, and I'm very happy that Myxo made this puzzle to showcase some of the cool logic. Edit: I was informed that the constraint was used in similar ways back in 2019. So sirxemic did develop, but didn't invent the constraint.

Yes, there's a bit of cuteness that Simon missed (due to this "sudoku ignoring"). Here (@44:03) [I had to follow along to just before that point] That "7" in box4 (because it had to be 10 in those outer cells), took the 7 out of that green cell in box1. [And being there was no 7 on that end, the 7 couldn't be symmetrical to itself on the other end in box9. ] So, they're a "69 pair." Now you have a 69 pair looking at the converging cell in box3 (R1c8). [The 9 was only in three places up there] That puts the "9s" vertically in col7 of box3 That takes the 9 out of two cells of that "green in box9" and actually places the "9." [It fed back into itself in other words -- nice] Which placed a "6" symmetrically up in the green in box1. Simon would have liked to have seen that [A precursor to that ending pattern] He's gotta pay more attention to "sudoku," I agree. He would have liked to have seen that lol 😂

@jeythegrey
@jeythegrey Год назад
@ 39:45 I think you can prove that this cage is a yellow 10 cage through the deduction you made one step before (which makes it a bit easier to see). You ruled that the 7 is in the 36 cage, placing a 2 in r5c7 and c8. This placed the 2 in box 5 at the bottom left 2 cells in the 11 cage. Thereby ruling out a 2 in r6c2 and forcing both 2 and 1 into the triomino shape of the 18 cage in box 7. Therefore, the counterparts of 1 and 2 (5 and 4) are placed into the rotational partner 10 cage in box 3, proving it to be a 1,4,5 cage
@zach31194
@zach31194 Год назад
If you slightly tweak the logic, Simons proof by counter example is more powerful. Because there is a 1 in the rotational counter part to that 10 cage, it must have a 5 in it. So it’s either a yellow 145 cage or it’s not. If it’s not, it’s a 235 cage. Which based on the logic shown by Simon in the solve, is not possible. Therefore I HAS to be a yellow 145 cage. QED
@Kursonkel
@Kursonkel Год назад
@zach31194 I disagree. The logic presented by @JeyTheGrey does exactly that, only with fewer steps. It forces 2s in the same positions as 1s in box 7, therefore forcing the 10 cage in box 3 by fixing two of its three digits due to the rotational counterpart logic. It's a classic Simon using more complex logic than needed.

Brilliant puzzle by Myxo, yet again! I do think the LMD rating system is not a great metric… there are puzzles with very few solvers in which the opinion of a handful of sudoku haters can severely drag the raw percentage down and convey the wrong impression. I don’t want to presume to tell you what to do as you’re definitely doing something very right… but if you get a recommendation from a voice you trust, and your testing team gives a puzzle high marks, then I believe the LMD rating can be wholly ignored.

I had a rare "yelling at the screen" moment for this puzzle. Simon spends a lot of time at the start trying to decide whether 9 can map to 9. But he could have realized this is not possible much sooner by considering the 22 cage in column 9. It maps to the 10 cage in column 1, and of course a 10 cage cannot contain a 9. Otherwise, excellent solve and very cool puzzle!

At 34:00, Simon examines the fact that it is difficult to put a 5 in the 36-cage. He sees there is a way. and moves on. The question to ask there is: what if there *isn't* a 5 in the 36-cage? If no 5, then no 4, either. And this would mean no 1 or 2 in the orange 10-cage, which is impossible.
@57thorns
@57thorns Год назад
25:40 I believe the 1 has to map to a 5 or an 8, so there is either a 1 or an 8 in the top right ten cage. And it is certainly not an 8. So by know we know these: 9 is mapping to 6 or 7. The other of 6 or 7 is the solo digit, 1 and 5 maps. 1 and 5 mapping means the 10 cage in box 2 is 154, giving us 24 as a mapping. Not sure why I felt the need to point this out, but just in case Simon finds something more complex I guess.

@Raven-Creations
@Raven-Creations Год назад
You could immediately tell that 9 does not map to itself (or 8), because neither 9 nor 8 can go in the 10 cage in C1. The cageless cells in box 5 sum to 22, so include 9, and since the 9 cannot be in the centre, it must map to 567. If this is a 985, the 9 maps to 5 and there's an 8 in the centre. If it maps to 967, 9 maps to 6 or 7 with the other in the centre. This gives you 678 in the centre, and 5679 in the corners. If you pencil-mark where 9s can go in the grid, they are quite restricted. This allows you to rule out 9 from R8C7, because that would put the 9 in the mirror cage in R1, forcing 9 in box 3 into R3C7 where it clashes. I loved the finish, which was one of the best I can remember. It did appear to be a deadly pattern, except that R1C4 and R9C6 were a 15 pair, making R1C6=4 and R9C4=2. That the pair rule should resolve the pattern right at the end was a treat. This was a really nice puzzle, worth a much higher rating on LMD. I kept being surprised by it, with new deductions popping up apparently from nowhere.

I think it's absolutely fine to rate a puzzle even if you don't think you found all the logic. If a puzzle has some complicated, esoteric logic required for a break-in and it isn't sufficiently telegraphed to be findable then the puzzle isn't an enjoyable one to try to solve. For my money, those puzzles are less likely to interest me because it's unlikely I will be able to solve them. A difficult puzzle doesn't necessarily make a good puzzle!

I thought: the two gets knocked out of box 3 because of the middle box. So there´s 1,2 in which means in the 10 cage in box 3 there is 4,5 in with a one.

@@revanbrummel8828 I struggled to understand this comment until I realised you probably meant the middle box knocked 2 out of box 4, not box 3. (At least, I assume that's what you meant?).

I do not think it would be fair to judge a puzzle only when _all_ the logic of the setter is uncovered. Why? Because I have seen Simon, bless his intelligence, looking over the most obvious pieces of logic. The reason seeing that is enjoyable is because Simon usually does spot almost all the other difficult logic and seeing something Simon does not is therefore rewarding. Might have been obvious, but we beat Simon to it. To get back to the other point, even Simon misses logic of setters. I think any judgement is subjective in nature any way and it greatly depends on the people who attempted (and perhaps succeeded) to solve a puzzle.

26:40 - I thought about something different. if you map 1 and 2 into the rotation of the 10 cage 2 digits in there would come from the 22 cage, even if you didn't knew what was in there, the 3rd digit on the 22 cage would have to be a 13...
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Год назад
I thought it was even simpler. We already know it's the 9 that maps to the hypothecated 7 in blue, so that leaves 5&8 mapping to 1&2 in blue. That instantly breaks yellow.

Oh what a frabjous puzzle! I spent 1:14:09 on it - of which a goodly 10 minutes on the last wrinkle. I *could* have solved that by simply ticking off the possible combinations but I did *not* want to do that. It would have been like the desecration of a work of art. It occurred to me that the absolute differences of the four pairings would make the rotationally symmetrical cages with wildly different totals *and* those with very nearby totals difficult - i.e. the 10 vs 22 cages and the 11 vs 12 cages - as it was, the 7/7, 2/4, 6/9, 1/5 and 3/8 pairings have deltas of 0, 2, 3, 4 and 5, but I did not know this beforehand, obviously. Therefore I played around with various ways of combining sums and differences of various possible deltas to account for the difference of 12 between the 10 and 22 cages. I made things *far* too complicated for myself and abandoned this line of reasoning and forced myself into Simon mode, wondering what sort of questions he would ask. Then I found the break-in, and it was exactly Simon's break-in. How much I hae learned from CtC - and not only variant sudoku techniques... And: Myxo, take a bow! You, my friend, are an artist with impeccable taste.

54:57 I totally agree, but I solved this already and only watched how you solve the end. For me the pleasure was that a) you had the same "end game" and b) I solved it differently. You can see that a 1 in row 1 means the 1 in row 6 is in column 5 and the 180° rotated cell in row 9 would also need to be a 1 by sudoku rules but must be a 5 by pairings. So r1c4 is not 1 but 5. And then the rest follows. I have to admit looking at cells r1c6 and r9c4, the cells which see the 15 pair and therefore can neither be 1 or 5, no matter where the 1 and 5 of the 15 pair go is a bit more professional to solve this situation.

"The worst puzzle" There are some folks (very well known) who use computer software or use other solvers videos to get a solution to "solve" a puzzle and then put in the lowest rating possible. If @CrackingTheCryptic is using ratings to determine a puzzle's worth, they may be doing themselves a disservice. This is why I try to make my puzzles not computer solvable (for instance, I will replace the German Whispers constraint with a cosmetic green line) . Unfortunately, as a result, very few of my puzzles get rated. I hope they get to see this comment.

The ruleset is fascinating and this is indeed a clever puzzle, but it falls short of brilliant--and probably deserves its LMD rating (had nothing to do with me). Trying to articulate to myself how it fell short, and what comes to mind is that it's 'flat'. No real break-in (Simon doesn't get his first digit until 27:22); no logical flow to the solve. I'd love to see this ruleset constructed with a solve path in mind. (Said kindly enough, I hope.)

I suspect this puzzle is rated low because a significant number of people couldn't figure out the logic and had to resort to guessing. If they have to guess to solve, they never see the logic that makes it a worthy handcrafted puzzle. It could be that this style of puzzle could benefit from more contextual cues to lead people to a logical solution path.

Simon's observation at @51:40 that he's just doing the same sudoku on the other side and not progressing the solve might be why it has its lower rating.
