By seeing your videos time and again, only one point is getting more and more emphasised: Basics, basics basics. Be sound in your fundamentals and you could become a good potter. Thank you for being with us!!!

Good shout. I need to be vary of this because in the past when I've lost control of the Cue, the follow through grazed my chest area which obviously didn't feel good. It needs to be like a Pendulum and consistent on every shot; obviously vital to maintain the momentum.

Great point Steve. Maintaining a consistent stroke is something I have never thought about before. I think I have always been guilty of doing little timid taps of the cue ball that are prone to rolling off or even 'quitting' on the shot, rather than playing a full stroke and letting the tip height take care of run through.
@BartonSnooker

Thanks Mark. You're exactly right. Altering the cue-ball height is the key 🙂

Hi Steve. Thanks for this and all videos. What would be good to know is why the follow through is longer on the second shot and yet in both cases your hand follows through to the same place (the chest). Thanks Steve

Hi Steve, thanks for the great video here. Regarding to low power shot, such as gentle roll through shot or soft screw shot, why is the follow through shorter than high power shot if both of the shots are completed by hitting the chest? Is it because the length of backswing is shorter?
@jason147h6
@jason147h6 4 года назад
Good point Andy. I like you would assume the follow through should remain the same when your grip hand hits the chest. The gap from your grip hand at vertical to the point it hits your chest will be your follow through....UNLESS...the players technique has a natural elbow drop allowing the follow through to be significantly longer like Ronnie, Murphy, Selby. Personally i find this elbow drop is very difficult to replicate unless its done naturally. A lot is said about a long follow through allows you to get through the ball better like the above mentioned pro's, but, look at Trump, Robertson, Higgins they complete only to chest on every shot and nobody gets through the ball better than Trump... The important point here is complete to CHEST. If you have a natural elbow drop on shots that require more power...great ...if not dont try to replicate it. It can ruin your timing, your game and your progress
@Andy-li9is
@Andy-li9is 4 года назад
Jason 147 H Very good explanation, Jason. I have a natural elbow drop when playing high power shot, but the accuracy is decreased as well.
@jason147h6
@jason147h6 4 года назад
@@Andy-li9is TBH i have tried the elbow drop which i dont naturally have by the way with very poor results. The problem with the elbow drop is IF its not natural for you you risk dropping it BEFORE contact with the cueball and that is catastrophic. Dont get me wrong i am no coach and tbh Steve Barton is one of the best i have seen imo and he has helped me hugely. I can only speak from 30+ years of playing to a decent standard and i believe nobody introduces elbow drop UNLESS its NATURALLY used by the individual. Also if you look at someone head on while they're in the address position for them to use the elbow drop the elbow has to be online with the cue. Imagine if your elbow was slightly to the right or left it would be nigh on impossible to keep the cue online on the follow through with the elbow dropping. Sorry for dragging this on but the point you made with the difference in length of follow through on Steve's example had me thinking the same thing🤔
@mumbo1107
@mumbo1107 4 года назад
I too am baffled by this. If the point of the video is consistent strike and follow through the only way it could be achieved is by shortening the position of the grip. The green ball shot and the black contradict the message surely. i.e follow through from vertical is the distance to chest always.
@jason147h6
@jason147h6 4 года назад
@@mumbo1107 That is correct Loyd. If the distance between your grip hand at vertical and your chest is say 4 inches then that is your follow through and the point of the video is to make sure you hit to chest on every shot low power or high. Its to make sure you don't QUIT on the shot ( not complete follow through to chest ) Steve Barton has a fantastic technique, great timer of the ball and we can all see he is an excellent player. He also has a natural elbow drop in his action like Ronnie, Murphy and Selby which allows him to have a much longer follow through on higher power shots because his grip hand can go passed the chest point because his elbow drops to allow this. By all means try the elbow drop technique but i believe you will only master it if it is only natural for you. Main point of Steve's demo is to get through the OB and hitting to chest allows this.

Hi Steve thank you for another video. Can I ask on the green your cue drops from the chin on delivery. I have been debating on this for a good while . I cue with my chin well off the cue what’s your thoughts on this modern player seem to be cue to chin dose this give a flatter delivery? Cheers
@BartonSnooker
@BartonSnooker 4 года назад
Hi there! My chin will start off touching the cue, but then when I deliver, it the cue drops slightly, it ends up not touching the chin anymore. You see this with a lot of the professional (Ronnie, Selby, Murphy). You have 4 contact points to help keep the cue on-line: 1) The grip hand 2) The 'v' on the bridge hand 3) The chest 4) The chin It's not absolutely vital that we have all 4 of these perfectly. But we try to get as many contact points on the cue to help it stay on-line. So you'll see a lot of top players start off with the chin on the cue, then the delivery happens, the head doesn't move, but the arm drops very slightly during the follow through, and the cue isn't touching the chin after the shot. I wouldn't worry if your chin is only slightly off the cue. Is there a reason you don't place it on the cue? Maybe pain? On old injury etc

BartonSnooker thank you the reply Steve. No I have always played the same but during this lock down I have been working on my cue technique on a make shift table and discovered I am hitting the ball a half tip higher than I expected. Looking for a solution for this I thought it may be connected. Cheers

It would be interesting to see and know wether your delivery hand was back of 90° to give you the extra follow through, or was it dropping the elbow and driving through, either way it will allow more follow I assume enabling for more zip from cueball?
@BartonSnooker
@BartonSnooker 4 года назад
It will be my elbow dropping, Mike. Depending on the shot I do it more or less. My grip hand will always be in the same position. The only exception to that is delicate soft screw shots. I will shorten up my bridge, and bring the grip hand forward. It just gives a bit of extra control on those shots.

Hi Steve, another great video. I have a question for you, do you breathe normally or hold your breath when down playing a shot?
@BartonSnooker
@BartonSnooker 4 года назад
Good question! Although for a lot of players they don't need to over analyse this, what is important is that you DON'T hold your breath. That caused tension. I would say I breath out about 50-60% of the air as I get down, and then don't breath once I'm on the shot. This just makes sure you are nice and relaxed and there is no tension in the body.

Got a question.. how can we control cue ball from a near distance screw shot... so it returns only a lil bit from object ball..? Been strugling with that for ages and cannot seem to find a solution.. Not to mention the millions of times the cue tip slips over and I make a mess of the shot...

Is that always you put the cue touching the chest all the while when you do back swing and follow through ???
@ernoeskeli1139
@ernoeskeli1139 4 года назад
Yeah, that's what works for me at least. I couldn't play at all if I wasn't keeping the cue touching my chest all the time. The idea is that giving the cue another fixed point (the bridge hand being the first one) it can only travel in one direction horizontally. And if you keep your chin on the cue as well then the cue can only move on one plane vertically. Keeping different parts of your body touching the cue gives you more confidence on moving the cue perfectly straight and consistently. Try playing a while keeping your chest and chin touching the cue and try to get comfortable with it. If you haven't done that before it will feel strange but once you get used to it it should help you a lot.

Hi Steve On the second shot by the black where we we cant see you delivery hand, you get lots more follow through, so presumably you dropped the elbow on delivery and actually went further past the chest point to get increased follow through, that you did on the first shot. Is this correct?
@BartonSnooker
@BartonSnooker 4 года назад
Maybe a little bit more. But I'm a lot closer to the camera on that second shot, so the perspective is different. Obviously the closer to the camera, the bigger the distance will look. Further away, the less it looks like I've followed through. My elbow always relaxes slightly though. Sometimes more or less depending on the shot. The Important point though is ALWAYS finishing with the hand touching the chest. Never finish a bit short because you're trying to 'hold on' or 'stop' the white ball.

@@mumbo1107 hi. Like I say, it's probably a bit more than the first shot. The first shot was very low power. What I mean by 'look how far it's come through', is that from where the cue tip started, look at the follow through. I'm just showing the importance of completing the shot properly.
