Great advice, thanks! A former teacher of mine said, " Inch by inch, everything's a cinch. Yard by yard it's just too hard." That quote helps me keep things in perspective. As I age, I'm slowing down and it can be frustrating. Thanks for the motivation to be more patient with myself! You are a wonderful teacher.

Thank you so much for this video Steve. I've seen you use the "if you can't see it, you can't play it" theory in many of your videos and it's one of the best pieces of advice for instrument instruction I've heard. You can apply to scales, chords, barchords, or even just basic intervals. This was a wholesome package that teaches people to not be overly competitive if it's bringing you negative energy, and set REASONABLE ACHIEVABLE goals! This video is worth coming back to on regular basis for an uplift if one is feeling down about their own guitar journey.

This little pep talk could not have come at a better time for me. After watching your videos explaining scales, chords, and how they all translate to the guitar, I finally decided I had the theoretical background I needed to start practicing and evolving. As of last week, 30 minutes a day (or more, if I get distracted), hopefully for the rest of my life. I'd been wondering if this moment would ever come. Maybe in a couple of years I'll be in a place where I can accompany my old man on his banjo. I think he'd really like that. Thanks Steve!

I pick up my guitar several times a day, for just a few minutes at a time. Whenever it feels right. Even just a couple of minutes is helpful. And don't forget to take some days off too. Muscle memory is created during times of rest, not while you are actually doing it. Your mind and body need time to adjust (which makes you get better.)

Hey Steve, Very good advice. Breaking down guitar practice into small parts is very effective for me. A good quote to remember is: "You eat a cow a hamburger at a time." Feel free to reuse it. I heard it somewhere years ago...

Jesus christ and the holy spirit! I know when I found the right person to follow. This is amazing, you are amazing! I started my guitar journey this week. Im 26 years old and I'm feeling soooooo behind. But, I've been thinking exactly like you said in the video. The fact that you are telling us about this, makes you an totally awesome teacher! I needed this tonight, thanks Steve. My background - most of my life, in fact - has been in music, but with percussion/piano and voice - not specifically with guitar. Despite having small hands, I'd gotten into it for awhile in the 90s, and returned to it lately, and there's a certain frustration that comes out of having knowledge/theory and an ear, and hands that just can't always comply with what's in my mind, or sketched out in front of me. My husband is the opposite - no real training (but he's taking lessons) and he's often asking me about theory matters - but he has the fingers to reach chords I simply cannot. I get negative easily ANYWAY, and hard on myself easily, but I've just kept telling myself that what I may lack in pinkie length, I can make up in pinkie STRENGTH! What I lack in the power to make certain chord shapes, I can hopefully make up for with a good ear and a love for invention and composition - push to make that challenge me, but that are also achievable. I take concepts from my old Hanon exercises (piano) and create fretboard exercises. I started practicing the riff from Periphery's "Marigold", despite that when Holcomb plays it - the shapes look this wide (----) and when I play it (on a 25.5 scale guitar to boot), it FEELS like (------------). But I do manage it, and I will keep doing it, because it's great for my ring and pinky finger strength (and I do enjoy that riff). Like anything else - gym, whatever - it will improve with dedicated focus. I love songwriting and guitar is just a voice I want to be able to use, but damn if I don't get down so easy. So again, thanks for thinking of this aspect of our practice time. I really needed it!

I agree with the post below: I see my kids hammer on the piano day to day, and I struggle with my self discipline to practice guitar daily - or rather, effectively. I am not yet there, but I do trust Steve. I am going to reflect on what I need to do, but I also need to stop reflecting and start doing.

Inspirational my dude! Many thanks.. I'm at the point where I have a pretty deep chord knowledge, it's about building up speed and also getting strumming consistent so it's at that semi downer type of time for me when it comes to progress.

This makes me think of something I share with my son every now and then. The difference between a Goal and Objectives. The Goal is long term. Objectives are what we do each day to accomplish our Goal - what we can do TODAY to get closer to reaching that Goal. For example - our Goal may be to build a house. What would the Objectives be? Well - to start - our first objective may be to lay out the boundaries for a foundation. The next day - our objective may be to frame the foundation in preparation for concrete. And on and on. It helps make our Goals more manageable and SMART!! S = specific/ M=measurable / A= attainable / R= realistic / T = timely (google it for more info.

Thank you Steve for this little pep talk. I am not very good yet I really enjoy playing this wonderful instrument and I try to make time for it almost every day because I truly enjoy it. My frustration is always about what I need to be doing next or jumping from one thing to the next then forgetting what I learned previously. I think that is the the biggest hurdle for me, so many things to learn with so little time. This lesson kind of puts things in perspective for me to just take one thing at a time. Many thanks to you sir and this wonderful public service that you do.
@psteeg3551
@psteeg3551 7 лет назад
you cant learn all things simultaneously. choose 1 subject, dedicate 1 whole month for it and then go balls out on just that one subject, e.g. dedicate 1 month to learning chords, the next month you focus only on learning scales, then the next month you focus only on hand synchronization, then the next month you focus on legato etc. That probably works better than trying to learn your chords, scales, synchronization and legato together

hey steve, thanks for the vids there is this guy called claus levin on youtube, and he says that when you practice you should focus most of your time and energy on mastering a single exercise/lick, by doing that you get more results. Whats your opinion on this?

Yeah, I agree with your discussion. I think your analogy of Bob Dylan and Van Halen pretty much made the point. It's pretty clear that Bob Dylan or Neil Young can't play guitar like Van Halen but whose music will still be heard more on the radio in twenty years? I think Dyan and Young will be heard more, but Eddie Van Halen could care less because he's doing his thing...he's realizing his art. They ALL are...and that's the point.
