Just so there's no confusion as to why there's no comments, basically they got nuked. RU-vid randomly decided to disable them (and didn't tell me, I had to find out from a fan). I re-enabled them, but the process of doing that somehow put the video to "Scheduled", which means the video is temporarily made private. And if a video is ever made Private, apparently it completely and permanently nukes the entire comments section. So there we go. Wonderful.

Fucking right! Also, what idiots think you need to simulate Lord of the Flies in reality for entertainment and experiment? The guy who wrote the book and the book itself makes it clear that this is not a good thing to be emulated or experimented with. And all the "results" of these extremities of nature and human behaviour have been studied and demonstrated at varying degrees by science and psychology before and after. We already KNOW this is what happens when you put kids into a situation like this. So its not a necessary experiment. And it sure as fuck is not entertainment.

@@rollingon5566 So there is practically no clear context you give as to why you would think that Elizabeth needs to get a life. If you would like to specify your position, that would be really helpful, but there are a few angles to take this, and they all make you look bad. Let’s start with the worst implication: that you want to shield these showrunners from people like Elizabeth making fun of them. I don’t think this needs to be said, but considering this comment, it might have to be said to you: these showrunners who exploited children and their parents for ratings and tried to pass the buck onto the kids for not being manly enough, do not deserve your defence. And the only reason why you would do so to begin with is if you were as malicious or incompetent as them. So let’s go down the list of what these people did, starting off with how things went. Children were left to drink bleach, became hungry and homesick, because they didn’t know how to cook because they wouldn’t have been taught that yet, they ended up eating enough sweets for a fight to go on. And Channel 4 decided instead of breaking things up, could only see pound sterlings in their eyes, and thought, “This is appropriate and suitable to put in our trailer for everyone to see!” Also, one boy pulled a kitchen knife on the other and it isn’t clear if the chaperones realised that they needed to intervene before things could get legitimately fatal. Two girls smoked on camera, bullying broke out in both houses, these children have been emotionally impacted by all of this for sure. In the case of Boys and Girls Alone (2009), the people at Channel 4 decided that God Save the Queen, but Satan Save The Showrunners. Their response to the carnage that went on was to move the blame to the parents, for failing to raise them. These people were in charge of children, and yet are too stupid to know how children work. They even tried to shift the blame onto the children themselves for not being manly, like literal supervillains in a parody where they scoff at those rightfully calling them pricks. One truly braindead spokesperson said that there were “just flying fists, tears and lashings of cruelty.” However, “there is no murdering.” If this spokesperson came out to be an actual psychopath, I wouldn’t be less surprised. Because you need to have a bar down into hell to think that murder is where the line is crossed in a house run by kids. This is why other companies and broadcasters hire educated people, and are run by educated people. This happened in 2009, and unless Channel 4 can prove to me that they have changed with more sensible leadership, accountability and having those jesters and psychopaths in their company sacked, I would only choose them if it was the one thing keeping me off the streets, and even then it would take me hours to consider the job. But okay, back to the comment. Do you stand by all of that? And consider anyone who dares to mock these idiots should “get a life”? Because to reiterate, if that’s the case, you are either just as malicious, or just as incompetent and these clowns. God, I hope it isn’t the case. In fact, maybe it isn’t, maybe it’s the other implication. That because Elizabeth is referencing Lord of the Flies, you somehow think that’s pathetic and that she should get a life. Well, that would be a step up from defending those with future tickets to hell, but that’s as a low of a bar as saying that at least there was no murder. Because that means you’re ridiculing her for… knowing about Lord of the Flies and using it at the showrunner’s expense? How on earth is that sad, or pathetic, or renders your life as worthless? That’s just borderline ridiculous. If you mean that reading Lord of the Flies and having enough knowledge of it to make a relevant snarky comment is apparently wasting her life, that’s just a disrespect to author William Golding. Because even if you don’t like the book, it’s taught in the school curriculum for good reason. Not to mention, for any reasons why you would say it, whenever I see people telling others to get a life, I always ask myself, who put you in charge? Who gave you the position of dictator of what constitutes a life? Even the showrunners I’ve shown extreme disdain to, I wouldn’t tell them to get a life. Partially because they’re certainly doing something with it, but also because that’s none of my business, and it’s no different for you or any of the other self-proclaimed dictators of what constitutes a life. Why does this person making fun of immoral people while also showing her knowledge of a well-known book related to the subject bother you to the point where you feel the need to remind tell her to get a life, whatever your intentions may be? Besides, it’s not like you’re talking to someone who spends their time reviewing and collecting comic books as an example (though let me make clear that’s perfectly fine as well, it’s simply a template for what some people determine as an unfulfilled existence). This person just made a snarky comment, nothing “pathetic” to remotely grasp at!

Crucial missing info re: Lord of the Flies: The book was specifically supposed to address the fact that these were Eton type boys. Who were beaten and not supposed to show any emotional weakness growing up. That they were boys who were going to grow up and be pushed through a system that favoured them being in government. The whole point of Lord of the Flies was “how about we teach children the value of empathy instead of beating it out of them?” And “can’t you see that having these same traumatised people, once they are adults, as heads of state, is a really bad idea? That the choices they make will not have sufficient humanity to them?” Etc. So this show was inherently leaning far more towards addressing gendered bullying and gender roles than it ever had anything in common with Lord of the Flies.

There was a series of experiments in the 50s called "Robber's Cave" that was basically this, but even more deliberately engineered to be Lord of the Flies like. It took place in a Summer camp, and boys were put into rival teams which they got to name themselves, and they had to compete in various ways. As you'd guess, there was strong rivalry between the teams, but unlike this TV show *within* teams there was a lot of cooperation and everything went smoothly. (The two teams' huts were some distance from each other) ... And then there was that one time the experimenters decided to create as much friction between the teams as possible by sabotaging them in various ways and making it look like the rival team did it. Weirdly there was *more* friendliness between the teams - they'd apologize for the things they hadn't even done, and offered to make it up to their rivals. And then they figured out they were being manipulated and both teams ganged up against the experimenters! lol

I think to some degree, raising themselves is actually NECESSARY, especially if you want well-adjusted, independent adults one day. When I grew up, there was generally still a lot less focus on supervision than nowadays. We had spaces entirely to ourselves, we spent a lot of time on our own, and so on. And NONE of this ever happened. We took care of our stuff because we knew we wouldn't get new stuff if we broke it, we took care of the house because we knew we'd be the ones who'd have to live with whatever we did to it for years to come. There were no adults to tell us that we had to clean up or be careful with things because that knowledge had already been firmly established as important by the time we started being on our own (7+). I think a big "problem" with this was that they knew they'd be gone after 5 days and nothing they did would matter since it wasn't their own stuff that they broke. As for their diet - there have been proper scientific studies on if children still get all their proper nutrients and eat healthy enough if they get to decide the menu, and it turns out that yes, they do. Because while of course the first reaction is to go "ohh cool then we can have all the junk food and sweets we want!" they actually DO grow sick of only that rather soon and want more variety. Again, not something that would play out within a mere 5 days. That these kids didn't even have the option because they were never taught how to cook properly doesn't help either, but that's not the main issue imo. Anyways. Basically, just saying that children can be quite civilized and well-adjusted without adult intervention if they treasure the place and things and relationships with their peers.

The most real comparison to Lord of the Flies is actually pretty hopeful. In 1977 a group of young boys from Tonga decided to skip school and go sailing with a stolen boat. They end up stranded on a inhabited island. While they have a hard time, they manage to have a very peaceful little society. The few times some of the boys have tension between them, the others send them to different parts of the island until they're willing to work together again. After 15 months they're found, and they stay life-long friends with each other and the guy that saved them. Link for reference: /watch?v=eDz-331V-pY (the video clips of them on the island is a reenactment, obviously) Granted those boys were significantly older than the children in this show or the fictional children in LotF (the youngest was 13, the oldest 16) but it's still an interesting story.
@ranchoth

So they say the children were "carefully chosen and screened, including by a psychologist"...I'm guessing this was to specifically filter 'out' the responsible, well-adjusted, interpersonally skilled kids who were capable of opening and heating up a can of beans in an emergency. When I was first making this comment, I was about to talk about how it's a bit different due to the boys being from military school but in the process of factchecking myself I realized that wasn't the case in the original book but rather the 1990 film which was my first experience with the story. Still, I think that's what makes the 1990 film a bit more tragic as the idea is that the boys were supposed to be better trained for situations like that due to the structure that provided them with discipline, but as soon as that structure was removed things just devolved all the same so that's why the man at the end was disappointed. But maybe in the book the idea was sort of the same due to it being written in a different era when boys most likely did have more discipline (and of course it's completely fictional anyways so who knows how accurate it would have been if it actually happened back then). Putting aside the horrible moral implications of doing a show like this, the premise is fundamentally not interesting to me because of course real kids in the modern era without as much discipline being put through something like this (with an almost completely negligent camera crew) will wind up in an awful situation. Everybody knows that even if you don't teach children lot of discipline you at least have to provide constant guidance to them until they reach maturity.

And none of this is a brag because it also hindered me. That last 10% of important things are still ones that I struggle with to this day: emotional regulation, compromise without being a pushover, mental health, social skills. I lived in a bubble for so long and I can do anything around the house, make repairs, soothe a crying child, give first aid. But the me-centered stuff... I'm lost. Yes, kids need to be taught life skills, but it's not *their* fault for not knowing them. And when all you teach them is the "practical" stuff, you're missing the bigger picture. Thought having a term for it might be helpful for you :) There's also a gender and race aspect to that, like "girls are more mature" and especially black and lantina girls being sexualized incredibly early.

I remember watching the second Boys Alone thing a few years ago when I was studying Lords of the Flies in school and the only thing I could think about was how similar the events are to the actual book (they elect a 'chief' that isn't listening to, the fat kid is relentlessly bullied, the loud boys and quiet boys create their own group, even killing the hedgehog together could be like the hunters killing the pig). I have no idea how much was scripted but I think it was either all scripted or the book is horrifically accurate on teen boys.

Knowing how reality tv works, they probably specifically looked to include children with particularily problematic behavior to escalate the situation. Even the food situation reeks of manipulation. If we exclude things that require cooking, why did they have access to sweets, but not to some food that doesn't need preparation? Also, there is the effect of a rather confined space. So even if the situation was "children stranded on an island", they probably wouldn't act like this.
