The Insane Lies of Chandler Halderson

The Haldersons were happy in Wisconsin. However, in the summer of '21, Bart and Krista Halderson, the parents, vanished while on a trip to their cabin. There was no sign of them, and so investigators looked into who had seen them last, the successful, future SpaceX employee Chandler Halderson, younger son. But in reality, nothing about him was true.

He was sentenced today to life in prison with no possibility of parole. Judge said " I have to ensure that the only time Mr. Halderson comes back into the community is to have the privilege of a burial that he denied his parents."

Thanks for the info. The quote just really drives home the highest betrayal anyone could endure. On top of the horridness , the short-sighted motive, and futile outcome for chandler and devastation for the rest involved by making this crime reality - worst of it beyond dying by the hands of your son for a reason that the crime would not solve - they lay scattered upon trash and land for eternity - never to lay whole or together again. It truly is just exhaustingly shortsighted, selfish, and cruel. Their own child. I guess it's Just frustrating to know this ever happened to anyone ever.

I was an active drug addict for 15 years. I’ve been sober for 4 years as of a week ago. I lied to my family and eventually they would find out my nonsense. Even in my darkest days I can’t ever imagine taking the life of anyone in my family. Today I live an amazing life and look at stories like this as a “what could have happened” in an alternate universe.

@johnselwitz5362
@johnselwitz5362 Год назад
I am also a recovering drug addict, been clean for over 7 years now, but this case hit especially close to home because I was in a situation very similar to Chandler’s. I had loving parents who worked incredibly hard for myself and my two brothers, however I started hanging out with the wrong crowd and made a lot of bad decisions. Because of that, I had to drop out of college after a year and a half due to finances and grades not being up to par, but lied to my parents and made them believe I was still enrolled. I’ll never forget those hours sitting alone in my car, having no idea what I was gonna do, and weeks went by where I just racked my brain trying to figure out what I was going to do. The thought of killing my parents never once crossed my mind, unfortunately I did think about doing that to myself, that’s how distraught I was. Eventually, with the help of my aunt and uncle, I came clean to my parents and told them everything that had been going on. It was such a relief that I no longer had to live that lie. They honestly were only angry with me because I had lied to them, if I told the truth, they would’ve helped me find a solution much sooner. I voluntarily went to a rehab facility for 28 days and was able to get things back on track, and now our relationship is better than ever. I learned it’s always better to stand on the ground and tell the truth, rather than climb a tree to tell a lie. So I don’t know what Chandler thought was gonna happen if he had just told his parents the truth. I’d imagine they would’ve done anything they could to help him, from what I’ve heard, they seemed like loving parents. That’s why this case was so gut wrenching. It was completely senseless, Chandler’s situation could’ve been fixed through some hard work and patience, but he chose a much more evil and cowardly solution, one which cannot be fixed. He deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison.

Since his Dad knew he had been lied to for years after talking to Omar Jobe and his reaction to that was to calmly text Chas saying so, should have shown him that it wasn't the end of the world and that he wasn't the type of person or Dad that blew his top off but rather the opposite, one who would have listened and helped his son. Chas after killing his Dad text his mom asking her to pick him up a soda on her way home, knowing that he was going to kill her after her going out of her way and doing one last chore for him, that is chilling.

Everyday I went out in the morning and came back in the evening, sitting my ass flat in the library or just driving around until I deemed it late enough to go back home. You're anxious and on edge every day, you don't sleep anymore. It's like backing yourself into a corner and you hate that you're lying but you don't wanna disappoint the people you love so you keep on lying and it's a toxic cycle and I felt absolutely helpless. Original commenter is right, it is highly anxiety inducing, I started to have suicidal thoughts at one point to finally make the torture I was subjecting myself to stop and to spare myself disappointing my parents with the truth. I think this is less about lying but rather what you do with your lies. I was found out but didn't murder my parents and that's where I guess where one can speak about having decency cause no decent person murders their parents for lying to them. Usually people would want to flee by hurting themselves, yet chandler chose to kill his parents and it makes me think he was just a massive asshole.

I've run into old friends when I was between jobs, and when they'd ask where I was working, I would just tell them my last place of employment. It can be embarrassing to tell someone you're currently unemployed, especially if you're just catching up. But I wouldn't lie to my SO, family, or close friends about that... I think it's significant that when Chandler mentions the cabin he doesn't say, "My family has a cabin up north" he always says it's his "parents' cabin". I can't think of anyone else I have ever heard made that sort of distinction but as he was weaving his tale of lies to the media, he said, "My parents have a cabin". That immediately set off red flags for me because to me that just proves how removed he felt from his parents. Another example is when he mentioned that his father (stupidly) probably reached into the fireplace and cut his arm and he doesn't say, "My father" did that or "My dad" did that. He said, "That guy" did that. I can't imagine referring to my father as "that guy". Also, when the reporter asked him, "How are you getting through this?" if that had been MY parents, I would have said something like, "Well, it's very difficult but I'm just trying to make it through one day at a time and I'm hoping for the best." Our boy Chandler thought that was the time when he should explain that some neighbors had brought him pizza. It seems to me that Chandler has a heart that is ten sizes too small! I'm going to guess he thought he would get away with it. He believed he could lie well enough. I think that is fairly common among people who commit premeditated murder. In his mind he would be able to burn his parents remains in the fireplace and they would disappear. Truth is you can forge steel at the temps the crematorium operates at. I also think his motivation was the life insurance. If his brother would have been around he would have killed him too. more money. Not so much the shame, though I am sure that was a factor.

I'm the CBS -Madison reporter shown about 8 mins in. I appreciate how you used the local media reports to tell the story. A couple of interesting tidbits of extra details, since no one asked for them: -Chandler was so open to talking with us, and did the three separate interviews over the course of a half hour with local media. -His only request was that he not be shown on camera, but was okay with being recorded - hence why you hear his recorded voice but don't see him in our reports -Police had reason to suspect him as a killer at the time we talked to him. Dane Co Sheriff's Office wasn't taking interviews at the time, which is bizarre considering it was a missing person's report (they'd usually talk to us in order to get the word out about the people who are missing). But essentially, PD suspected something was up at the time but we all went there and talked to him anyways. I myself was alone when we talked. It was just me and him at his front door. He was arrested that night. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't somewhat disappointed we didn't hear from Chandler during the trial. Oh well. Either way, it's an interview I'll never forget. Thanks for giving this story some shine. Well done.

I just pray his parents didn't know what hit them, that they didn't actually have to see that their child was about to kill them. Any time there's a murder of a good, loving parent, committed by their own kid(s), I just feel awful imagining how it must feel to see your baby and your last thought be the realization that the person you've raised and loved unconditionally is taking your life. Since Chandler couldn't even face them regarding the truth about school and work, I'm guessing (and hoping) he couldn't face them to do this horrific thing to them, either. Obviously it's sad and terrible no matter what, but I really just pray that it was fast and that they didn't see him before or as he shot them. Just horrific.
