56 year old :uncle" here. Many years ago I had heard a line that has always stayed with me about maturity and emotions and how to deal with them. It went like this - " In my 20s I was always worried about what people thought of me, in my 30s i didn't care about what people thought of me, it was only in my 40s I realized that they were never thinking about me at all".

Neville talking about how he feels about meeting a collective or uninvited guests or friends of friends or a group of people he is uncomfortable with is so me and several others who have social anxiety. We are few in number but we are there. All we want is someone to be okay with us like we are okay with them. We have a different personality, accept it and move on. Thank you for this Neville :)

So true. 💯 Agree. Just last night I had Lakshmi Puja at home and I usually start panicking 5 days prior to social gatherings n all. The event went normally though but the pain of the last 5 days was crazy. I really wish we were let to be the way we are. I'm usually burdened by the expectations and the pressure to act and sound "normal", which probably isn't even there for real. You are right. It's very few of us, but it's real.

I think about nostalgia , we as humans mostly expect that things which have already happened in the past will be our best experiences , and no future experience can supersede it. So even when something better is happening in the present we tend to ponder upon past memories to be the best.

My emotions are always so at the brim, I can cry at the drop of a hat. I think I should have been an actor. Especially since last 5 years. I had strangely self diagnosed myself with anxiety, depression & quick triggers 5 years ago, and hence started keeping away from people, stopped being social, etc. If I had a panic attack or an anxiety attack, I just had to rush back home and sit in my room to feel better. I had done that so many times when I was working in an office. I changed jobs so many times and finally I'm jobless now, trying to figure out what to do. Let's see. I can't tell you guys how liberated I feel seeing you guys familiarise people with these things. It's always been an uphill task communicating my condition to friends and family. People used to be like - "listen everyone is suffering so just suck it up and do your job." But I just couldn't. And I hated this reaction. Then there was another reaction -" I'm there for you, talk to me or reach out to me whenever."-- which has to be the fakest and the most clueless thing non depressed people say to depressed people. This sympathy doesn't help either, it pisses me off rather. And the worst - when they start giving advices after advices, to a point that it suffocates you. Now I am so afraid to open up, I rarely go out or meet people and even if people visit my place I get anxious. Social interaction causes a great deal of anxiety to me. Im planning to see a new doctor now. Hope things get better. Loved this episode, really related to everything you guys said about mental Anxiety and depression. I love you guys and TISS too much. ❤️

Absolutely love your podcasts! I am undergrad psychology student and I just wanted to add to the phenomenon you all were talking about where when one person smiles and the other does too this happens because of neurons called the "mirror neurons" in the frontal lobe which is activated by performing an action or by seeing another person perform the same action. These neurons play a big role in imitation of others, understanding their intentions and feeling empathy. Psychopaths lack mirror neurons and hence they don't feel empathy at all.

Empathy I feel. What has bothered me is the fact that over the years I've realized that I am unable to cry when something really hurtful happens. Like going away from someone I truly cherish and love. I cry later, in solitude when I am alone, when the person of my affection cannot see me... And I don't know why. It really screws up. When the relationship is going on, I will do everything to make the person happy and comfortable. But if it comes to the point where we have to part... whatever the relationship is, friendship, family. ..most importantly a relationship of love and passion, of partnership I am unable to show emotions then. I just go numb. I block up. I come home, and then I cry and cry and cry. The person that I am crying for doesn't see it. All that person sees is me smiling and hugging and saying "Hey, take care". It has bothered me no end. Because once I am alone, i then go through the whole crying and falling apart. It makes the person i have so much affection for, feel that i am cold and don't reciprocate their feelings. And it makes them feel emotionally rejected by me. It is very important to show your emotions but I also realize that I have invested in people so much when they didn't care about me as much, that it's a self preservation tool that my brain has developed.

What is the evolutionary purpose of nostalgia .. dayum guys! Good one! My observation - Nostalgia definitely is a means of self preservation, also escapism to cope and give hope. ( like you guys mentioned) . I heard about this social experiment carried out with 25 citizens over the age of 65, where they were taken to a resort, with decor styles from their youth, music/ food from their era and stayed a week at this premises, no newspapers etc to remind them of current day. Those with severe arthritis made an attempt to dance, people who had been quiet for months, started to engage with others. Pretty fascinating !

This has to be hands down, my most favourite episode! 🧡 Loved every bit of this conversation and everyone broke down bits to understand and help us understand several aspect of emotions. And also just want to mention that, Neville in this episode, just hits different! 🌼🧡 Sending love to all of y'all!

I feel like the evolutionary function of nostalgia is in keeping the emotion of empathy intact in us. For example, what differs us from a robot who learns from experience? Basically the robot saves its experience as a memory while we save an experience as a memory in conjunction with an emotion we felt due to that experience.
