The jobs that are out there, for the most part, don't pay enough for a single person to rent an apartment and pay bills. It's the rich getting richer and the rest of us feeling that we don't work hard enough to get along. We are all wage slaves

Many of the Van lifers that I see on youtube, their main income is RU-vid, I got a job that is fully remote, and as soon as I started my job. I started converting a large sprinter van into my full time home. My job doesn't care where I am, all HR cared about was that I have a stable internet connection when working. I started van life nearly 4 years ago, thanks to videos from Chrome and Bob Wells. No intention of being a nomad, just wanted to get away from high rent and awful neighbors. I’m still in the same cubicle job, and last month I made my final credit card payment. I’ve been able to save a little, and it feels great to not have to check my bank balance before paying a bill. Van life doesn’t have to be all about beaches and sunsets; it’s about reclaiming some freedom.

Vanlife is appealing to me because I saved up enough cash to buy my first home. But by the time I saved it, the cost of homes raised again by a ton. So went back at it to save up again and again and it keeps happening. So I focused on credit repair, and got that up. The banks kept throwing new excuses at me to prevent me securing the loan despite having almost entire payment for a home well over half. Denied denied and denied. Always chasing. Rent costs rising to insane levels. And one bout of bad luck took most my savings. I’ve given up on the idea of ever owning a home… until I discovered Chromes channel. Have new hope that I can combine my love for the road and owning something I can call home.

I’m 8 months into full time VanLife in the UK. 30 year career over, marriage over and after 12 months of planning I moved into my van. There is a lot to like but it’s a struggle. It’s not VanLife per se but it magnifies other issues… financial, social, mental… it’s not an easy fit with others who are not happy with my life choices. Thing is, this was not exactly a choice and it’s most definitely not the RU-vid / Instagram dream… it’s got a lot of advantages over sticks and bricks but it comes as no surprise that it is far from a panacea to it as you can imagine. Compromises and challenges every day. I have not found anything that I want to do for work. My old work is not something that i can do anymore… for a number of reasons. Retirement at 52 is a daunting prospect. I planned as much as I could but for me, nothing ever works out like you planned.

What I find kind of daunting is if your van breaks down, ( and unless you're buying a new van it's gonna eventually) you have no where to live, and no way to get to your job unless you have another vehicle stored somewhere, or you're in walking distance or have public transportation. Then you're stuck paying mechanic costs, and for a hotel. My car broke down recently and it took over a month to get it back because they were backed up at the mechanic shop. Those types of scenarios are REAL.

Ive had my mortgage paid off for a few years now, so I have the best of both worlds. Security of a paid off home and my own land, and travel when I want going on camping adventures and then coming back to a Sticks and Bricks. I wouldn't want to do vanlife full-time. Especially as I age. I prefer a traditional home, but I can see the curiosity for a single childless person

I build vans for a living, and decided I wanted the same freedom; with a little nudge from you and several others on the Tube, I'm making the move. Sometimes you just need to hear it a few more times before you dip your toes in. Thanks Chrome, you're an inspiration!

I can’t answer for CA, but many of the jobs in the service sector rely on tips, if there are no tips then the pay isn’t enough to even afford insurance. I am 62 & I was separated from my job due to disability. COBRA insurance for me is $1130.00 per month. That will be more than 1/2 of my monthly payments. Or I will need to go to a Medicaid account . I want to do work, but what I do they tell I no longer can. I’ll find something. I do understand soMe of the issues though from both sides.

Hey chrome, appreciate ya man. You help to keep me motivated while at work driving this semi. The flood of 16 we had, changed my life drastically but I’m loving it, I have been houseless since. No the flood didn’t damage my home but the exes, and her with the family needed it more than I did so I let her have it and moved into my pickup, I love the outdoors so when I’m home from the road I tent camp. It is such a great way to live I’ll never go back to sticks and bricks. Thanks man.

Wow thank you for this reality check! I watched a lot of vanlife RU-vidrs and you are absolutely richt: there are things they are not telling and/or showing us. Witch is ofcoures there choice. But what you are telling us is a part of that life style as wel. But the other things you are saying are also true. If you really want something, go for it. Do not hold back, or find excuses. Go and do it. A great message for me. I have been thinking about realising some projects, but i allways let something come in the way. This is the wake up call i needed to actually start with those projects. Thank you so much and respect for your content!

I like your honesty in your vids, unlike so many young people making 'perfect' videos where vanlife has no issues here and there which is reality!! Keep up the great vids! Problem with some of those jobs pay so little it sometimes cost more to work places then not! I am the old school generation who does work, but I have seen why people leave as well!

I hear over and over again the advice for chasing your dream is just do it. The one thing I think is absolutely necessary is to stop listening to other voices trying to tell you how to live your life. I'm not onto Christmad but that certainly was a pretty little spot. Nice place to dream.
