@@guineapiggames8208Welcome to Scott Stash fanclub, where we are oddly specific about our jokes, like Disney Mulan live action remake that's so funny stupid literally no one laughed cause that would require people to remember it exists
I don't know. Looked like if that cat had a quarter, that little paw would have placed the coin on the arcade as a way to say, “Next!” 😸 Heh, seriously, cat looked super friendly. 😻
The iCade came out before Apple really had official controller support. So as a workaround, its essentially read as a keyboard. Which is why it works with specific apps from that time that were designed for it but not Sonic. Im guessing the stick is essentially a Direction Key, which would explain Temple Run+. I believe it works with the Mame app, if you can get that on there. Also love that it has legit arcade controls. I replaced the restrictor plate on mine at some point with a 4 way one from my local barcade.
@@DougMcArthurMusic I bought one at the yard sale just so that I could do that and then I probably used it for like a week never touched it again lol The buttons are way too big and so it hurts trying to reach them all versus other Arcade sticks like the one for the PS1.
fun fact: for some reason on ios back then, the OS provided no viable way for games to detect whether keyboard keys were held or released. so as a workaround, each action on the icade maps to two keys: one for the initial press, and one for the release it's a pretty cool hack but definitely meant that devs had to go out of their way to support this device, making it even less likely to work on modern games. this thing was ahead of its time for sure in terms of being a controller for ios
I can tell you who in fact does care about iPads in this day and age: Pilots. Foreflight is a super powerful "Electronic Flight Bag" including flight planning, electronic charts, and logbook stuff. It's only available for iOS and iPadOS, and thus makes iPad minis super common among pilots because it's the perfect size between the full size iPad and an iPhone.
I, too, was an early adopter of the initial iPad releases. I was among the first generation of iPad kids. My mother got one for free as a work incentive thing. We were meant to share it among my siblings, but I was the only one that ever had any desire to use it. And use it, I did. Whenever I was at home, my trusty Pad was within my grasp. Many a PopularMMOs video was watched on that screen. Many a crappy mobile game was played. I kept the original Flappy Bird on that thing until it finally broke after well over half a decade of use. They don't make 'em like they used to. We had a lot more grit back then, I think.
@@RonaldMcJuicy still doesn’t seem very long to me. Yeah for an Apple product but that’s kind of my point is that Apple products in general have a short shelf life. And I say this with an iPhone lol so I’m a bit of a hipocrite but I know they can do better and choose not to which has always bothered me
@@emmawagner8915Apple products have insanely long lives. They are and have been one of the few companies that provide software updates LONG after the device was released. The newest iOS version JUST NOW stopped supporting the base iPhone X. The XR and above are still supported. That’s why Apple products hold their value so much better than Android devices, which sometimes lose software support and I’m not even kidding, like 2 or maybe 3 years after release unless you choose the most popular ones.
Okay, tell me if I get this right. So Scott's Stash is slowly becoming "less effort Scott the Woz" (less effort being some effort but not max effort), mixed with Scott and friends, just doing whatever, with some bloopers every now and then. Meanwhile the main Scott the Woz channel is slowly getting more and more effort put in until it eventually gets so similar to the production value of an actual TV show that it gets nominated for an Emmy, which it has a 60% chance of winning. Scott's Snippets also exists as an official clip channel. On top of ALL OF THIS, Scott apologizes constantly to US for not uploading frequently. HOW DOES THIS MAN EXIST AND WHY IS HE NOT BEING STUDIED FOR A CURE TO LAZINESS?!
Actually wait. It just occurred to me that the way the set/shot is set up looks like a talk and/or late night show. Somebody make Sunday Night with Scott Wozniak a thing.
I think the biggest audience the ipad has is artist. We actually get a benefit out of the larger screen. As far as portable drawing devices go there isn't something as easy to use and versatile as ipads.
Yeah I miss this era, there was a certain magic back then to having this big portable slab to watch RU-vid on and play a unique set of games with. Not to mention all the funny things people were making for it like custom wallpapers and novelty apps and, yes, something like a giant arcade cabinet called the iCade.
I used to play that iCade stick at Apple Store and Target demo unit! I remember I almost bought it, until it didn’t work with fighting games, which kind of defeats the purpose of the peripheral having six buttons, and you can’t even play Street Fighter nor Mega Man!
Thinking back on the og ipad era of mobile games is so fond. Anyone remember the iOS port of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite? An ACTUAL true mobile GAME in a time where most ports were terrible.
I think the nostalgia scott is describing is back when passionate devs were making new experiences for iPhone and iPad.... whereas now, it's only giant businesses making money sucking minimal-effort pieces of garbage loosely disguised as games.
Props to Scott's parents for actually expecting him to pay for the stuff he buys with their credit cards. I think parents putting their CCs on their kids' devices and then just not paying attention to how they're actually spending is a big part of how we ended up in the microtransaction hellhole that we're in.
Next you GOTTA cover the Blackberry PlayBook. When I was younger I actually had one of those before getting my first iPad sometime around 2014, and I remember playing so much damn Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja and Temple Run on that thing. Like literally for hours I would play these mobile games, I don't know how my underdeveloped brain didn't get bored. That monstrosity of a tablet needs a video, Scott!
I have a lot of nostalgia for the early Ipad era: Ipad 1 was interesting, we didn't get one, but my friend had one with tons of cool games!(like Angry birds, kick the buddy, etc.) But we DID get an Ipad 2, well my mom got one for her 40th in 2012 (Holy moly 12 years ago!) And we kept that same Ipad for around 8 YEARS. I have tons of good memories of playing Minecraft LITE with my cousin and my friends. I also played a lot of Terraria and Clash of Clans!
This takes me wayyyy back. My mom had an iPad 2 and the Atari app had an arcade stick stand that you could buy for it. My dad bought it for her for her birthday and we played that thing so much.
The sad thing is that I own three of these... bought them for $10 each on clearance at Macy's way back when. I put a PC in one, a Rasperry Pi in one (found a perfect monitor for both), and kept one just to use with an iPad as originally intended. I use them pretty much never-- gotta love the iCade!
I remember my mom buying an iPad 2 at release, she ended up not really using it so I kinda took it over. For Christmas one year I actually got the ICade for Christmas, and my mind was blown. It was the closest thing a kid could have to an arcade machine at home at the time, and it was the way I beat Sonic 2 and CD. Recently I went back to it however and damn are those buttons wayyyy to tight.
So much to unpack here… • The Vectrex is older than he is, but is more excited about it than I am. • I couldn't get Mega Man to climb down ladders on the iOS version of the game. • I wanted to get the iCade. But after seeing this video, perhaps it's best that I didn't. • 11:32 - Someone with an active Apple Arcade subscription?! Surprising! • Cute cat 😻
Got one of these from my godfather as a birthday gift back around when they released and take it out every 4 or so years when I remember it exists again lol
I remember seeing this and really wanting one when we first got an iPad. Completely forgot about it till this video came out. Leave it to Scott to remind me of these little obscure items!
I actually had the handheld version of this device that made your ipod a more PSP like device when I was a kid, the coolest thing about it was that you could rotate the phones slot to swap between landscape and portrait games
I actually have the icade in my bedroom too! I’m just happy someone else has finally recognized the joy of this amazing, esoteric piece of junk that I absolutely love 🥰 there was also a midway arcade classics that worked with it, and that was the first time I played both rampage and gauntlet. It was because of the icade that I got into old school gaming in the first place 🎮
There was a brief period in which I was serious about gaming on iPad, until I realized how little developers support them as new iOS/iPadOS updates rolled along.
I had one of these and what I learned when looking into compatibility is that the controller was a complete hack. It’s actually a keyboard with the buttons mapped to certain keys. That’s why games have such spotty compatibility, because they’d have to hard code the bindings just for this one accessory. This was before Apple built official controller support into iOS.
I have an iCade in my man cave, I rarely use it but I’m never letting go of it. It served as my poor-man’s bartop arcade cabinet back in the iPad 3 era and still just looks cool and arcadey just as part of the decor.
It really sucks that, despite Apple Arcade being a thing now, they don't seem to have built an equivalent to Steam Input to make the myriad controllers configurable and compatible with different games.
Ipad 1 is surprisingly good for offline media. On the 64gb version you basically get 60gb of usable storage. Compression doesn't matter too much due to the display and you can fit a surprising amount of stuff on there. Also the battery life is surprisingly good considering its a 14 year old tablet
I had an ipad mini a while back. It was nice for reading digital comic books. Only reason I’f get one now is to draw on it with the apple pencil on the go, but I can’t justify the cost when I have paper, and a pen display for my PC. There’s a few artists I work with that use them though.
The icade can actually work with android tablets too because it is a bluetooth controller which allows you to use it with arcade emulators like mame. It's interesting that you could have better support for it using android instead of ipads which is what it's made for.
I swear to god, every time i watch one of your videos i completly forget what the video is about, and then you show off the product, this guy is really a wizard
