@@cristibaluta I recommend looking yourself in the mirror and ask if you're proud of yourself for responding to a stranger with this embarrassing comment.
Guys, you publish a review "for photographers" and once again *not a single test of the ProRAW* shooting experience or editing possibilities? Especially since they announced improvements in this very field? Kind of disappointed to be honest :(
And yes I understand this is not an everyday feature for most people, and yes ProRAW was mentioned during the JPG XL segment, but a few tests would've been nice!
@@ronjatter We will wait for Samsungs release most likely and compare these three against each other. Perhaps other phones as well depending on what comes out during that time.
I’m impressed with the stabilisation. Unless you’re using a gimbal (are you?) it’s a dramatic improvement. Also welcome not to see those annoying green orbs with the 16
Im so happy to see a video in HDR. I shoot and color grade LOG footage from 15 Pro Max all the time and I think if more people knew how to properly work with HDR, this should be more common. At this point i'd say we all have some type of an HDR capable device.
@@davidgambin2551 Most smartphones - even pretty cheap ones do have oled screens today, which can display HDR at least to some degree. iPhones do support HDR since the iPhone X, even though the first one to record videos in HDR is the iPhone 12. What phone do you have?
The camera button is a nice addition, but the fine motor control required and pauses just make it impractical in many scenarios. I really don't understand why the pop under menus on half press is so small. The user ASKED for the controls, take more space, make it easier to manipulate. Software updates should help for sure.
There should be a section in the review where you use Halides new process zero mode because there's way too much processing happening with the iPhone photos. This review is basically reviewing the software of the camera, whereas if you used Halides process zero, you'd be reviewing the actual camera hardware
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI Blackmagic is fantastic, Kino too. But for still photos the process zero mode in Halide is really the only option for iPhones. Apple's camera app does so much processing that it's basically a waste of time for a serious photographer
But the software is a critical part. You can't review a smartphone camera without including the software. It would also be entirely irrelevant since no one will use it that way.
If the hardware hadn’t changed at all since last year, you might have a point. But since hardware has improved and the software is ALWAYS improving, it does no good to say that a camera review should exclude the stock software. That’s what 99% of people will use.
Video looks great, I'm not seeing overly orange skin tones seeing that you are shooting in HDR. That's good. You must have had an ND filter because it looks most of the time very None iPhone footage. When using the 1x lens it almost looks like a Full frame 24mm f4 ish for bokeh. I think it looks great. Unsure what to think of the quad bayers, Tony Northup has been really critical about them.
For what it's worth, during our first day of testing we noticed that the format was acting super inconsistent with Gmail and Drive. By this week, that had all been ironed out and it is now working as expected. That means Google did something, which is a good sign.
It's also a shame Google went with Ultra-HDR custom implementation (extension of Adobe's XMP gain map and container) instead of JPEG-XL. Maybe they will switch fingers crossed.
@@megamastahSurely Google's implementation has to be better for regular users. JPEG-XL is like a DNG with a JPEG attached, right? Surely the file size is going to be way too large to be useful for everyday shots. The huge advantage of Google's direction is that you get highly compatible HDR images without the raw file size cost
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI because Xperia has the best camera in the mobile industry. From the first picture you take you can’t believe your eyes. And the macro mode on the 1VI is state of the art!
I really appreciate this in-depth review from the view point of practical use. It definitely helped me to stay with my 15 pro max and be happy with it.
@@Thomas-fk6ep They are honestly so similar. Other than the picture style filters I can’t see much difference at all between the 15 Pro Max and the 16 Pro. We did the flare and low light comparisons to show you and there is some minor improvements but that’s about it.
Charging on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max is now 45-Watts instead of the 30-Watts of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. You will need a proper charger and cable for sure.
It’s not though. The extra draw is to run apps while charging without compromising the charge speeds. The wired charging is still maxed out at just under 30 watts.
There is literally zero improvement in image quality over any small sensor smartphone device in the last few years. Just expensive, nonsensical gimmicks...
Wish I could see your impressions of the Vivo X100 Ultra, specially Jordan's, because the telefone camera on that phone is unbelievable good. It produces results that are hard to believe comes from a phone camera, and a smaller telephoto camera even.
So long, friend! I've got 14 iPhone users in the family I married into (ironically I'm their tech guy) and they've been working on me for years lol. But, I'm not an Apple minded person so with Pixel I stay. I did extend an olive branch by setting up Bluebubbles so I can be in their imessage chats though lol.
It’s been a year and I just noticed since taking off my case on the 15 Pro that there is a spot on it where it’s supposed to be an “antenna band” where the camera control is on the 16. Odd they’re basically in the same place so I imagine it was supposed to be a thing last year
@@MrBearitall So Apple actually removed the third millimeter antenna and revamped the others to offer comparable response. That made way for the camera control button.
Oh, I’m so glad you reviewed this iPhone 16 Pro with the clear case on it. That’s what I’ve been wanting to know, Is how that camera button responds through the case. And it looks like it works flawlessly. I have the iPhone 16 Pro Max coming and now, I have the Apple clear case arriving same day.
Great review. It seems like the biggest benefits are the 48 megapixel 0.5x sensor and the faster readout. These are hardware related. but…. I’m wondering how many of the changes are software related and will also show up on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 18. Better hair refinement, for instance.
It would be nice to see tests with trickier lighting. Sunsets/sunrises in particular I feel like my current iPhone just completely botches the white balance. Curious if thats been improved. Great video!
@@NDakota79 I don’t know if I buy it, but the official statement is that they completely redid the architecture for the picture styles and thus rely on the new processing power to implement it. Sadly we will not be seeing it come to the older phones in the same way.
It's a shame 4K 120P is only on the main camera. It should've enabled 4K 120 on all the cameras like the Sony Xperia and Vivo X100 Ultra. Also, why not 4K 240 fps non log or non HDR?
Naming Samsung here as an example is not that great tho. Their 3x is pure trash and in the smartphone world really ancient. They haven't changed this sensor in almost 4 years and it's just not better at all than todays phones 3x crops... even in the S24u itself.
We did comment on it in our conclusion. But it’s the same story that we commented on years ago and it’s endemic to any quad bayer sensor that you’ll find on Apples and Googles and Samsungs for example. The usable resolution is not the same as a larger sensored camera at 48 megapixels. Not even close. But it’s definitely better than the standard 12mp Heif files wife when you do need more resolution.
This is a great review. Please keep shooting HDR whenever possible, as it makes the content much more enjoyable. About generative AI for photos, I think Apple is simply worried about possible abuse and consequent negative impact on the company. They’ll probably change their mind as soon as they have it properly under control.
@@dans.8198 thanks! I think Apple is just doing classic Apple. Let everyone else come out with stuff and then do their version. I bet you their philosophy will change as soon as they have something they like, just as you said.
If my math and assumptions are correct, I could shoot 48mpix raw with the main camera at 2x optical, then crop in to 5x and get a 19mpix resultant image. That would give me more resolution that 5x optical zoom using the 12mpix periscope telephoto. Possibly the image from the main camera would also have improved colour and other qualities. Am I missing something here?
@@MrNils3373 There is a lot of scenes in this video that look like they've been recorded on a professional camera. Even if it might be barely an upgrade over the 15 Pro, I've never seen footage with this look from any iPhone
Well we address that later in the video. It is up to 45watts but the charging is capped at 30 just like before. If you are running an intensive app or game while charging the phone can draw extra power so as not to interfere with the charging speed but the wired charging is still the same speed.
Remember when Apple pioneered computational photography, their mantra was ‘we will make picture better than a reality’. Nowadays, as they fall behind in pretty much every aspect of what makes smartphone ‘smart’, they change the marketing spin to ‘wanting to preserve reality’. Yeah, this is a really sad state of affairs at Cupertino.
I don’t know. I think the pro raw photo quality on my 14 Pro is still pretty good. Not sure that the 16 would be a huge improvement. I’m not that concerned about video.
I have a question for example - I am interested in Undertones and Styles and I believe those are available in non-pro models as well, if I am not into telephoto lens, is it a wise option to get those instead of pro models, I believe the camera specs for those two cameras are exactly the same.
As always, enjoyable and complete. I love the LOG workflow w/15 Pro; monster files are no prob since I delete them after the edit. The new audio mics and focus options look great. iOS often stops recording LOG, I suspect it gets confused by the hub, Shure MV88+ mic, SSD, and cables; having good built-in mics and a small SSD would be better. Not sure I'd get acceptable quality for music, tho.
currently using iphone 15 pro.. sended my jpegs taken with my phone to a lab and had them printed..10*15 and some 13*18...they were nowhere close to ones I shot with my fuji...yes they look awesome on phone screen..but dont look that good when printed out..might be something due to heif files...I can literally tell which prints were taken with iphone and camera..by the way my fuji is just an old xt3
Exactly. This 48MP claim is bogus. It's just pixels a quarter the size of the 12MP sensor, which it then bins to create another 12MP image with marginally more detail. It just doesn't hold up when enlarged even a modest amount.
Personally with used iphones I prefer to buy them with some sort of lengthy warranty which usually means refurbished in excellent condition. Because of that, 1 generation older iphones are sometimes not cheap enough to warrant saving the couple hundred and sacrificing any new features and new warranty, not to mention new battery. I feel that if someone is in the market for a new iphone right now, they're already willing to pay the price of the newest phone, and therefore they should go for the 16 pro/max over any savings they might have over a 15 pro/max. In my eyes there's enough upgrades/changes to hold you over for a few years without feeling like the future upgrades you don't have are starting to stack, and you feel the pressure to buy up again soon.
I kind of want Apple or Samsung to say "f*** it" and use the ENTIRE camera module area for a single APSC sized sensor lmao. Seriously, I would much rather have that, and maybe some cool, smaller sized magnetically attachable prime lenses on a pro model. Sure, I get that'll probably never happen, but I would be all over it.
I couldn't justify upgrading from a 12 mini after seeing Tony Northrup's vlog on the true resolution of the new iPhone 16. I know I can photo stack but who wants to spend the money on something where you have to use a work-around from day one?
To summarize: iPhone 16 Pro is a software update from iPhone 15 Pro, which was a software update from iPhone 14 Pro. I guess Apple will play their usual game to convince me to do the upgrade by killing the battery and performance of my iPhone 14 Pro.
