The molten metal takes up more space than the solid metal. It shrinks when it solidifies which causes the weld to "pull" and put tension through the weld. when you peen you expand (stretch) the metal at the surface and help reduce tension in the weld. If you do it long enough or use a shot peening machine you can actually induce compression "squeeze" into the weld. This makes a crack harder to start.

Love your running narration. Watching you modify the Rubicon axles reminds me of my 57 Willys Wagon I did up in 1969. We dropped a 283 Chevy in it and for proper ground clearance we re-arched the leaf springs with a high arch and went from under slung to over. Back then we didn't have the add on goodies like they do today, but we had a truck repair business who must have bought out all the old military spare jeep parts from Uncle Sam. We cut off the old leaf spring bracket and we had a new/old government one we welded on top of the axle tube. Worked like a charm! The old government stuff was interchangeable with the parts on these 50s civilian rigs which made it nice, especially the half-moon rubber wiper/seals for the front knuckle housings were twice as thick as the civilian junk. Only problem with the military stuff after you got it out of it's plain brown wrapper was spending the next hour getting it out of it's cosmoline tomb and cleaning it up and everything came packed in lots and lots of cosmoline! Added a Warn overdrive unit to it and I had a truly one of a kind lifted rig for that era. I drove it for several years as a daily driver with no problems until some guy from California saw me driving it on the beach in Rocky Point Mexico. He pestered me for days and finally upped his offer to a crazy $3500 bucks for it which was a sh*tload of money back then, so I sold it to him. WORST MISTAKE I EVER MADE!!!

Good show! Voice over was cool, that worked. Brushing on oil based black rustoleum. I like that, good stuff. Takes awhile to dry in colder temps. Going to be some good shows in that shop! heated floor is genius🔥🍻😊

I used that ball joint press, and ended up making the 'special' bits out what came in the kit. By the time I finished the C clamp bit was bent open a bit and the accessories were a little deformed. But still much cheaper than going to a garage.

I've never had good luck with those cam bolts and slotted mounts. They always end up working loose. I ended up getting rid of mine and just relying on adjustable control arms. No problems since.

I have been researching myself and I think I’m just gonna buy the pre assembled biggest unit that northern tool sells. I forget who makes it but it’s cheaper on their own website right now. It’s all set up and ready to plug and play. Seems like a good deal too after you add in all the parts.

You can also use fiberglass insulation to hold the heat into the cast iron. It won't burn up.

Hey Matt just a heads up on the LJ 4 speed transmission. The overdrive ratio is insanely low. So you will wanna re-gear to the tune of thick cut 5:38s for 35" tires. Once you do it will be awesome. If you don't you won't be able to stay in overdrive.

I recommend you test the heat of things like the differential housing with the back of your hands so you find yourself doing so instinctively. The reason for doing so is that if you burn your hand, the skin might shrink causing your hand to do what is called "claw" which makes healing more difficult. This may be deemed overkill but, it is always better to err on the side of caution. In my opinion anyway.

You really should do the inner C gussets too. The TJ rubicon inner C’s bend up really easy. It’s a pain to get them straight again.

The saying about cabovers is you're the first one to the scene of an accident. I think it will be nice climbing hills as you won't have to look over a hood and you'll know where your front wheels are.

Shop looks great! Just a thought, put some posts and an I beam across the ceiling to accommodate an overhead hoist. They are a life saver! Ose the I beam is there, you can get the rest at harbor freight for under 400$

On mine we put steel posts from the foundation, then tied it in to the main beam of the ceiling. It came out bad ass. I have an 11 foot mezzanine across the back, and it works great for lifting stuff up to put on there. If you give me your email I can send pics.
